The season opener in Oregon let me get back to the type of fly fishing I love best, climbing mossy boulders with a light rod in the coast range looking for aggressive trout. Didn't see anyone for hours and caught enough fish to lose count. For the most part, these cutthroats wanted nothing to do with anything but dry caddis patterns.
Pairing it with my Mojo bass and throwing your typical small and large streamers/ poppers/ bugs. Is there anything decent around $100? Id like to keep it less than $150. My current reel is heavy and it’s very easy for line to slip through the seems soo looking for the opposite of those things lol.
Anyone tried to extract the small threaded shaft for a handle on your fly reel. I found one and it's in pretty good shape other than the handle. I was thinking about trying to drill a small hole and extract it with a small screw driver or something. Any ideas or tips?
It's low 50's, rainy and cloudy here in Jersey. Nobody else was on the river but me and I absolutely cleaned up. All C&R today with 32 total trout caught in 3 hours. Best session of spring season! All caught on my homemade spinners too!
Your best shot at capturing a good photograph of you and your catch, is first having someone along with you that's competent with a camera in their hands. But even a world class photographer will tell you, it's extremely difficult getting those picture perfect photographs, if the person handling the fish has no clue what their doing.
I went fishing today, and I caught a wild trout on a costal river. I was not able to get a picture of it because I didn't want to keep it out of the water for too long, but I can describe it.It was about 5 inches, and it had red pectoral fins with a white outline.
No videos allowed here, but here are some screengrabs of a mayfly(?) emerging. This was one of those moments when you decide to take a break from fishing, slow down, and just look around. Great day on the US’s most famous trout stream.
I want to catch one of these big Florida grass carp on the fly so I bought some dog biscuit flies, but I wasn’t feeling good about trying to land a 15-40lb grass carp on those tiny ahh hooks. So I tried to tie one up on a sz 6 mustad tarpon streamer hook. I think it turned out alright. Just trimmed it up with my regular straight tying scissors.
My (AMAZINGLY THOUGHTFUL) wife got me a guided float trip on the green river for Christmas for I got to cash that in about a week ago. Started out with a double nymph rig (size 20 and 24 scuds) and landed close to probably 10. A mix of bows and browns.
Read more about I just received my vice today. These are the first flies I have ever tied up. They definitely aren’t the best & I highly doubt they’ll catch trout but it’s a start! I don’t have many materials. Only really red/black threads, dyed pheasant tails & Peacock hurl..
Took my brother out for his first trout fishing experience and he out fished me. Although he used all my gear and I told him where to cast its was thrilling experience as a novice myself to teach someone else my hobby. Biggest was 15" smallest was around 9.
By Justin Pickett I have never met anyone who could pick up a five-weight fly rod and make consistent, accurate fifty-foot casts without ever having prior experience with fly casting. I used to play a ton of golf. So much so that at one point, much earlier in my youth, I could hold my own on any given course and typically shoot Par.
Hi guys,I’m hoping to get some advice on alternative lures to the megabass range. The reason I want alternatives is solely price, they look incredible but are very expensive. No doubt they are worth the money but I just don’t have that kind of cashflow at the moment unfortunately.
A project to rehabilitate salmon spawning beds in the Boyne catchment has had early signs of success in efforts to restore the salmon population of the river and its tributaries.
In this week’s “How to Tie” feature, Hans Weilenmann ties a variation of AK Best’s Spent Caddis, a simple caddis dry that will trick picky trout during and after large hatches.
I’ve always had decent luck and know how to catch decent sized probably stocked trout but, I’m starting to go out to bigger lakes here in Alaska and got skunked yesterday using all my usual lures and techniques for 10 inchers.
Rode my Honda shadow (320 miles round) to kernville ca and spent two days wondering eventually at night in the edge of town I got my first two trout out of a real river ever …. They were babies tho used a black nymph
The other day while sitting down tying a few Waltz Worms I had an epiphany, the cat hair that plagued every corner of my house would be a fantastic lineal worm colored dubbing! So I did what any rational individual would do and sat my cat (Murf) down and pet him until I had enough to fill a ziploc bag.
By Dan Frasier For all you flats guys and bank fishermen out there. Landing, unhooking, wrangling, getting a picture, and releasing a fish can all turn into a giant goat rodeo. Nothing makes it worse than having a bare hook connected to a nearly invisible line which is tied to your very expensive rod; flailing about.
I am pretty new to fly tying. I think I have tied a total of 6 flies before these two. I know they are not the prettiest but do you think they will still catch fish? Criticism is welcome as long as its constructive! Trying to improve so I welcome any tips you have. If I am doing things right, tell me that as well.
Tying up a chironimid, and I'm very new and unsure about soft hackle. What material is used for soft hackles? What's the main goal of soft hackle (I've assumed it's for movement)? What size are you generally looking for with soft hackle? Is this pattern an imitator or more of a stimulator?
It took me a while to get him into trout, but I think he’s coming around quickly. After he caught the PR today he said “ man there really isn’t a more beautiful fish”. I felt I’d done something right after that🤣.South eastern Minnesota18 and 20 inch. Nothing crazy big but he was jacked.
I’m thinking of getting a 10’ 6wt rod with a sink tip line but not sure. I already have a 9’ 5wt with floating line and a 9’ 7wt with sinking line. Just wanted to see what yalls thoughts are.
Drove over 15 hours to the eastern sierras in high hopes of landing a nice brown. My pops and I rented a pontoon boat 3 weeks in advance (biggest mistake ever). The day of… the lake was the windiest it’s been all year, white caps were in full fledge. We couldn’t even troll for the big fish opportunities. Most fish were 30-40 feet deep.
Was out fly fishing and couldn’t get my flies out far enough with a 9’ 5wt will I need a bigger heavier rod since my rivers are bigger? Also these pools were at least 10-15 foot deep and I can’t imagine how I would be able to cast effectively with that amount of leader on.
Finally caught a nice bass on the North Fork flats. I’ve been skunked before and this weekend I had plenty of good shots, just could not lay down a quality cast and entice a bite. Finicky mofos! Then late on Sunday one came in at 12 o’clock, I landed my fly five feet from his nose, stripped a few time and got the bite.
The Jackall Timon Deka Bung is freaking.... I dunno what to say... I'm imitating trout pellet feed that the trout eat at the hatchery! And it catches em!
As spring has progressed, I’ve found myself really enjoying swinging up trout on soft hackles with my single hand Spey rig. I’ve also enjoyed tying these flies. Simple, impressionistic, and irresistible under the right conditions.
Had one of the best days fishing today. The river i fish have native brook trout but I don’t think they get this big. Are these native or stocked and how can you tell?
Don't worry she was only outta the water for the length of this video. Only been fishing trout the past little while but I'm really enjoying it on my UL rod. Used a worm for this one on a slip bobber & 4lbs line. I'm from Alberta Canada mostly stock fishing here but it's still a good time.
I received an email from a reader the other day asking advice on steelhead nets. I thought it was a topic worth some discussion. We put a lot of thought into rods, reels, lines and flies but often the piece of equipment that seals the deal is an afterthought.
Got a bunch of wild brookies and some rainbows, as well as a decent whitefish today while fishing an unstocked stream in Idaho. Always rewarding catching wild fish, even if they’re just lil tuggers. Great way to pass time while waiting for the flows on the main rivers to relax
It's wet cuz I was checking what it would look like in the water, but it was made with white marabou-like feathers, some orange feather, part of a strip of rabbit fur, and some flash. It is on a size 12 streamer hook.
Like the title says what a difference (to me) in casting bass flys on a 6wt vs a 5wt. I’d loaded up 6wt line but had been using a 5wt rod. I was making do but wanted to at least see if there was a difference so I ordered a new rod to try. HUGE difference!!
Really hot day in southeastern PA, flows were down, sun was out. Trout were seeing and refusing everything. But came away with a nice little smallmouth for my efforts.
First attempt at a stimulator.Would welcome some criticism. Also when fishing these, apply floatant or no?Also what’s the optimal size? This is a sz10. I mostly fish granite and silted creeks and small rivers in North GA and TN.Bonus question — please recommend a good dropper to go with this pattern.
IT'S HARD TO OVERSTATE THE IMPORTANCE OF CONFIDENCE IN FLY FISHING. IT'S OFTEN THE SPECIAL SAUCE ON SUCCESS. I squint into the sun. My eyes burn from sweat and sun screen. I take a few deep breaths and puff them back out. I stretch my neck side to side, it pops and cracks.
I posted a 24" brown last week. Monster on the 3wt. Last night, I fished at dusk for some dry fly action. Although, they're much smaller, easily as satisfying. When I got to the river, there was a few bugs but nothing major. Saw some bigger sulfurs and some smaller Hendricksons.
I was up on the maitland river, fishing some falls to try and get my first steelhead on the fly, got skunked on those, but holy crap, I have never seen so many small mouth in my life.
Two words: electric chicken. I lied four words! Crappie magnet! We swear by them we havent even used our new colors cuz it works so dang well! Cast after cast. A wonderful day.I’m new to eating fish I still despise the fishy taste. My first fish I ate was the first flounder I ever caught, I almost cried it tasted like chicken to me.
There’s this river a couple hours from home that runs mostly on private land, is lousy with grizzly bears, and is the worst river to wade in the West.

First fish on a self tied fly, was a little brookie which was my first time ever seeing one in person...I live in Northern California in the Sacramento Valley, so this was extra cool!!
Our annual May fishing trip usually takes us into the Bridgeport, CA area along the 395, but this time we headed south to Kennedy Meadows and Bishop, CA areas. I was able to get my first golden trout…and my second, third, fourth, etc.I was stoked, thinking I got the “Sierra Grand Slam”, but I’ve learned you need to get them all in the same day.
Have any of you had the experience of fishing and getting to know an area like the back of your hand, and then the fish you had not expected or dreamed of being there popped up out of nowhere? Or maybe a place really close to you, or in the back of your yard that a fish you never expected would c...
Had a day yesterday. On a small stream we came upon a school of 20 inch rainbows. We all took turns catching and releasing these fish. Not aloof like the San Juan trout. Later in the day we hiked downstream and they were spread out. I caught one sight fishing in ankle deep water.
Hi there, my 16 year old daughter and I are new to fly fishing over the past several years… we will be headed south on 395 from Oregon to visit our family ranch near Lone Pine and the golden trout wilderness. My daughter would love to do some fly fishing in meadows, around big boulders, smaller creeks and pocket waters.
l'm usually a smallmouth/panfish guy, wading small streams and rivers. Trout locations are 3+ hours away from me. So I took my 2 boys to the White River to catch some Trout. Was a good time!
Been out to couple lakes already this season. But decided to head way back to see if I could hook into some beauties. It was a cold misty overcast day. Fishing was super slow. But was able to hook into this guy towards the end of the day.
MODERN WATERPROOF ZIPPERS HAVE REVOLUTIONIZED THE DESIGN OF WADERS. The ease and convenience of zip-front waders is easy to get used to. There was a time when I scoffed at the idea, but now I can't see fishing in anything else. Especially with the durability and dependability found in the new waterproof zippers.
I’ve spent the last 10 years spin fishing for bass, walleye and pike in Minnesota. I’ve gotten hooked and experienced all the highs and lows fishing has to offer. Always admired and appreciated fly fishing because of the technique, approach and culture that is associated with it but never had anyone around me that was into it.
i recently got the kestrel bfs and zephyr featherlight rod, 6lb braid and 6-4lb leader i’ve been slaying bass on the combo, and soon here the trout streams will open back up again..
So, I have been trout fishing for quite a while and I release most of the time. I use a plier and rubber net. Usually I net the fish, take it out of water and unhook, take a photo in net and release, and it takes less than half a minute.
What we think about these emergers? Some feedback would be helpful. The last one with the yellow background may be the best one, added some xsmall flash on the body. Is the hackle a bit too high on that one though?
The intent here is to mimic the pumpkin seeds in the creeks I fish here in North Texas. This was the third time I’ve sat down to tie. Lots of room to grow still, but so much better than the first time.
I saw a video of someone using a trout magnet i think with no weight and no bobber and they are getting so much more distance then me. is something wrong with my setup? 1000 series reel
*Pic for attention*Hey everybody! I started fly fishing two years ago. My first rod was a 5wt that I loved, but wanted something a little more delicate for smaller streams in Colorado. I then bought a 4wt. At the time I didn’t realize how close these two were to one another.
I almost got caught with my pants down fishing a spring creek the other day. Without even giving it a second thought, I had left the cabin without one of my dry fly boxes, that's loaded with all my favorite Sulphur and Light Cahill patterns.
Had too much fun on the McCloud these past couple days sorry for the spam but if anyone is gonna appreciate this vid it’s you guys thanks for watching 😄
By Owen Plair What makes the winter fishing for redfish so special? There are not many fisheries that have a winter time season, due to migratory fish, cold temps, snow, and ice. One of the many great things about the Lowcountry is that it is a year round fishery for Redfish.
Was on the McCloud River for the day camping by the upper river loop and was able to snag my first ever brown trout using a megabass GH55, was so cool watching this fish come from the shade line and smoke it
First time fly fishing, hoping to go for small mouth bass tomorrow. Pulled my fly rod out of the closet after some years and I’m not sure what I’ve got here.
Looking for a 3wt rod. I have a butter stick in 7'0 3wt, but am having a bad time when I fish indicators on it. I typically use xs oros if I'm going that route.I like my girlfriends 3wt Clearwater the little I've used it for indicators. I was wanting something similar to that. The tfo and classic trout are a little cheaper.
In this week’s “How to Tie” feature, Tim Flagler with Tightlinevideo ties a classic streamer that will catch fish anywhere in the world, the Mickey Finn. Learn How to Tie This Fly: Difficulty: Easy In the last several years, fly tying has seen incredible innovations.
Did a little hike out in the mountains for some lake fishing and caught my first grayling and about 12 more after that. Overall a spectacular day of fishing and good views
There’s no trout within a hour of my college, After failing to not spook every carp in local ponds for almost a month, went to the river and found some willing to play ball
By Jesse Lowry Fishing is as much of a mental game as any sport. Whether it's having confidence in your gear, the conditions, your technique, hell, even in the fish, the psychological factors play a role in how we perform on the water.
On the subject of fly wear and tear. These two landed me 10+ rainbows each over the weekend. The GRHE has been clearly abused but still fishable for at least 10 more. The Caddis is still in very good condition because it is backing line under UV resin mixed with some sparkle powder.
I tied up a wooly bugger last night, today I took it to a lake and caught my limit(4 trout) and had one get off right as I was pulling it to shore halfway through my fishing, and they were striking it hard(or as hard as 8 to 14 inch rainbows can). My hackle got unwrapped on the back end, and my maribou tail got a bit ripped up.
While bulky and awkward looking, these streamers have crazy movement from the pacchiari’s dragon tails and bucktail. Swimming like the big soft plastic “bulldawgs” used by conventional musky anglers.
This is a Mustad Alpha Point Caddis Offset Barbless CO68XAP, size 10. I think they are 2x short, but they are at least 2x sharp. What I like about them, is the sturdy wire they're built on, and the big eye. It's practical for someone with a shaking hand.Tag: Small UV flat tinsel. Body: Troutline Belgian Rabbit Dubbing olive caddis.
I am new to fly fishing, what are some flies I could be adding to have a more well rounded set up. I fish around the Maryland area. All recommendations are appreciated!
I had yet another successful day at one of my favorite spots. Caught giant mackies, a couple good browns, and one big rainbow which went home with me.I ordered a tape so I can be more sure of my measurements, but the biggest mackinaw was around 20".
In Hokkaido, Japan, the snowmelt season will be ending soon, and the serious fishing season is about to begin. Please come and enjoy fishing in Hokkaido.
Thought I'd get some feedback on this first pattern I've attempted. I would also like to know if there are some other color variations any of you tie? Im a trout and steelhead guy in Northern California if that helps.Tight lines yall!
Have been fly fishing since the age of 16.I've hit a ceiling in my skill level. A large part of that is by buying flies.I rely on "what's worked before" or what the local guide says or what looks good vs understanding the insects, the hatches, the streams in detail.Just put my Fullingmill fly box with 300 flies on ebay.
For nearly two decades, a fly fishing show out of Argentina has been building something most of the mainstream hasn’t fully seen, largely because it’s existed outside the channels that define modern fly fishing media.

By Marcus Saunders That gentle morning light seems to push back all those fears that hound our minds at 3am. Glancing sideways out of the ute window, I see vague outlines race by as the human world slowly comes into focus; the radio is silent, and only the occasional rattle of the trailer reminds me that the boat is in tow.
I’m sure this has been talked about already so I’m sorry to beat a dead horse. What did you all do to stop yourself from feeling overwhelmed? I’ve only ever went fishing for catfish. Just cast out and leave it sit. So I’ve never been the best fisherman to begin with.
Started at 7am, got back to the truck at 7pm. 8.2 miles out, plus some extra from missing the trail due to snow. We were the first visitors of the season, post holed through snow the last mile.Last time I did this hike was 8 years ago, glad to get back. 16 fish total, smallest fish was ~13" and biggest ~20". We didn't have a tape so you decide.
I have a mile of land along the Pine River in the Upper Peninsula. The Michigan DNR classes it as a category 4 trout stream. I believe it contains brook, brown and steelhead. Is this water rich in fish?If you go upstream, the water is clear. I guess clay turns it brown.
Hey there,So the ones that know me, know that i travel quite a bit for fly fishing. And on my road trips, i've quite often not had a washing machine or even a sink at hand, when transferring between water ways.
At the normal hole I fish at I just got a glimpse of an absolute monster cruising around. Sent a lot of things his way and never got a bite but I got a few looks and a quick chase. The problem is I’m having all the normal sizes smaller ones hook up before I get a good shot at the big one.
By Louis Cahill About once a year I get an email from the editor of a fishing magazine saying, “I heard you have photos of golden trout.” The answer is yes, but better than half the time the question is completely wrong.
So im fairly new to fly fishing with only one rod. I know the best answer to my question is have 2 rod setup but i want to get more better at fly fishing before buying more gear. So question is, say if im throwing streamers with 2x taper leader and i want to throw size 14-18 nymphs or dry flies.
Photo 1 is one of my dad’s many catch of the day photos. Film, 1990s, Cook County MN.Photo 2 is me and my wife’s catch from this morning. iPhone, today, Decorah IA.
I had my first day river fishing recently using nymphs and I loved it. The only thing I didn't love was the weeds and losing my nymphs on a 7x tippet. I'd love to fish some wooly buggers now but the last time I did it I lost it on the first cast so now I'm thinking I should try using weed guards.

There’s this frenzied energy in the air, this mad dash in trout towns all over the country – get to the rivers, and fish them hard, before runoff hits and we’re confined to lakes until the end of June. Usually, this is right about when that fervor hits its peak.
Lionfish may be the mother of all invasive species. Take a moment to think about this: a lionfish (native to the Indo-Pacific) has no natural predators in the Atlantic ocean. It can live up to fifteen years, reaching sexual maturity in less than a year. Once mature, a pair can spawn as often as every four days.
Out of interest what weight class rods do most people use for trolling for trout? Flat lining and down rigging. Would you use a light rod or stick with a medium rod?
4 nice sized rainbows fed the whole family last night!Something funny as well, the crappie you can see on the stringer, survived the 2 hour ride back in the bucket with 4 trout, then another 3 hours in the garage covered in ice.
Went to visit family and threw the 4wt in the car because why not? Was hoping to find some brown trout from shore given the info I’d read on the water. Had about 12 perch and no luck on a single trout in 5+ hrs. Sadly I had forgotten the streamer box at home but had one (very poorly) home tied black bugger leftover in the bottom of my gear bag.
Read more about Been working 50+ hours a week in an office and this is the first fly I’ve tied in 6 months. Had me day dreaming about days spent chasing brookies in the wilderness..
Measured at about 21 inches. This fish ate a size 18 BWO. My very first dry fly brown trout. It was amazing. At first I didn’t know what flies he was eating and I threw an Adam’s. But he didn’t even eat that.
Took my son out to a pond owned by a ckub we belong to where they stock trout for put and take (literally not allowed to release). He managed to catch his limit for the first time in about a year so I was super proud. He also got a nice black crappie (most are around 5" here).
This is not your average Rakkelhanen (Capercaillie-Black Grouse hybrid). The Rakkelhanen was invented by Kenneth Boström in 1967 as a caddis imitation. It's normally tied using brown antron — because apparently fish back then had very conservative taste in flies. This one isnotmeant for trout.
MY GOOD FRIEND DAN FLYNN GREW UP IN MAINE CHASING THE GIANT BROOK TROUT IN THE RANGELEY LAKES REGION. These days you can find him high in the headwaters of the Southern Appalachians after the local brookies or tied into a big wild brown downstream. The geography may have changed but there is still a lot of Maine in his tying.
Only problem is I don’t know how to fly fish… he did give me a fly rod though so I’m excited to give it a try. I love trout fishing so anything that gives me an excuse to put on my waders is good enough for me. Cheers.
Hey everyone,Been debating getting into tying. Doing a lot of trout fishing recently and with it comes a lot of donations to the trees. But I do a ton of saltwater fly fishing as well. So I think the next evolution I fear will be getting into tying to learn more about rivers and when to throw what, especially for trout.
Picked up a "fly tyer's grab bag" from Bass Pro, it had an assortment of materials and I figured it was a good deal. There were 2 calf tails (one natural and one chartreuse), but I've never seen calf tail used in a fly.
I've always targeted Bass, Pike, and sun fish on the slow days. Got my first BFS combo and thought I'd try to target trout for the first time. I'm very happy with the results! Rooster tail FTW. Also captured my boy building the courage to touch any fish for the first time.
Tied a Ness C for trout on a size 10. Almost entirely faithful to the description given in Trout&Salmon, apart from red gp tippet instead of purple in the tail and the use of hackle instead of bucktail. Quite chuffed with how it came out.
By Louis Cahill Concentration, Relaxation and Communication. I wish I could claim those words. I'm quoting Jose Sands, bonefish guide at Andros South Bonefish Lodge. Tomorrow is my first time fly fishing since I was a kid. Never fly fished for trout. This is the box I put together, what do you think? What can I expect? Fishing a larger river and a small creek
I’m in NY in the Hudson valley area and no matter what I do I can seem to catch a trout. I’ve tried flies, Spinners, spoons, etc. I can even get a hit! I’m new to trout fishing if anyone’s got any tips for me that would be greatly appreciated.
Patapsco River, MD. Got three hits earlier in the evening yesterday, but couldn't set the hook. Third time I got a hit I was able to land it - nice little rainbow trout on a streamer. What a great feeling!
By Herman deGala It’s the time of year when the rivers and creeks around Colorado are blown out because of run-off but the weather is just gorgeous. What is a body to do? Of course, you could head to some tailwater. Until you get there and find everyone thought the same thing. Or you could head to your nearby lake or pond. It’s all filled up.
In a few weeks I'm going to Yosemite national park and I want to try my hand at trout fishing. I'm still a beginner and I just have a telescopic rod and spinner combo. What line and bait should I use? There's a lot of regulations for fishing in the park so any help would be great!
This was my fourth guided trip. My first three landed me a total of…3 fish, lol! This time, good conditions allowed me to land 10 fish including this 26” wild, brown trout. I ended up catching this guy twice. First time, he snapped the line and took my fly.
A close family friend and mentor of mine in his late 70’s introduced me to fly fishing last summer. He guided all around Montana when he was my age and he said his wife panted rods for Winston when they were living in Twin Bridges.
Hello All. I am extremely new to fly tying and fly fishing. I live 4 hours from the nearest trout fishing so most of my efforts will be on bass fishing. Thought to post some of first attempts at gurgler and stealth bomber flies to see if anyone might be able to provide some feedback? I’ve struggled some figuring out the proportions of the flies.
I’m looking for recommendations on materials and equipment to get into fly tying. I’m looking to mostly be tying dries, nymphs and terrestrials for SE US trout.
I love the colors on these fish. Mostly caught on double nymph rigs, but a few hit some medium size streamers (drifting them). I assume most of them are stocked but don’t know for sure.Location: New Hampshire
I caught this Brook Trout down in Lincoln National Forest, NM. It made me think, where is the southern most brook trout fishery in the US? Can anyone beat the vicinity of Ruidoso NM?EDIT: With further research sparked by some comments, Ruidoso NM is approximately 33N Latitude.
By Bob Reece When connecting a person and a fish is the foundation of your job, the fly that you use matters. The pattern design as well as the hook that it’s founded upon must both deliver.
Spent a decent bit out on this river today and caught absolutely zero fish. Initially started by throwing inline spinners upstream, but it was impossible to get the lure to spin at all due to the current and it wasn’t until it got downstream where it had any action.
For a 7wt rod what is your favorite streamer line that holds up. I had a buddy that just bought the SA 250 grain streamer pro and it ripped first time fishing it. Want something reliable that sinks fast so in the shallow stuff I can just retrieve faster and it’ll get down in the deep stuff.

Had a slam on my local river with streamers yesterday. Never moved so many fish in this river like I did yesterday. My 6wt setup with large arbor reel and full sink line was originally for Stillwater but it’s become a killer for me in my go to river.
I live In the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire (UK) area and looking for places/ rivers where I can catch and keep fish, either trout or other freshwater fish! All help and advice welcome
By Justin Pickett Oh, the world of fast fly rods…. They can be great tools. Some of my favorite rods are most definitely faster than your “average joe” rod.
Just moved last month to Boise from Orange County, California. Crazy to think that a fishable river is this accessible only 10 min drive from my place. This is located in the middle of Eagle, Idaho.
By Justin Pickett A pair of hemostats can save a fly fisherman serious time on the water! If I were asked what one tool, or accessory, I absolutely have to have with me on the water, I would have to say it is, without a doubt, my trusty pair of hemostats. Not my sunglasses, nippers, or my net, but hemostats.
Using a 7' UL rod with a 1000 size spinning reel. 6lb braid with 6lb mono leader. Is this sufficient for targeting Trout? Considered dropping down to 4lb mono, but not sure of the benefits.
For the stream it was on, it couldn’t have been very much bigger. It jumped and made runs and took me to my reel for the first time for a trout on the fly. I was so used to stripping line to bring in fish it took me a second to realize I needed the reel.
We've gotten some decent rain the past couple weeks, so I broke out the fly rods and hopped around a couple crossings targeting bass and sunfish. It was a cold start in the mid 40's , but still was able to wet wade as the river water was warm enough. Caught a couple nice post spawn bass and various sunfish on a fly I tied up.
Foam is fake, but it makes the fly float forever. Jack Horner invented this fly in the 40's. Tied close to the original, but the back is of foam and not deer or elk hair.Edit: This fat boy is known as the Humphrey.
This guy is missing left eye, easy to I.D. but I knew it was him as soon as he was close to the bank. Plus another solid rainbow that i probably should've kept for dinner. Spotted a palomino also who wanted nothing to do with the bait I had 😅 (cant figure out how to post video with the pictures) any tips for those stubborn bastards would be cool.
My first memory of bringing a trout to hand with a fly rod took place back in the spring of 1990, on a seasonal trout stream, located 45 minutes north of Atlanta, GA. It was a far cry from a trophy trout at 10-inches, but that freshly stocked rainbow trout, touched my eleven year old fishing soul to the core.
Novice fly fisherman here, after almost a year of researching equipment, lines, flies, waders, vests, etc…I took a trip to North Ga for a few days to try for trout. I booked a trip with Cohutta Fishing Co and they didn’t disappoint!!The day of our trip we were rained out but rebooked for two days later.
A lot of people in this group liked and found inspiration for their own projects when I posted about a photo box I made, so I was hoping some of you might appreciate the poster frame I built over the weekend. This is a life-size poster of a 28.5” brown trout I had the great privilege of bringing to hand last fall.
Tying some Elk Hair Caddis and need advice and tips of laying the elk hair. Is this too much material? And what are tips for cutting off the patch? Thanks! This is a #16
Meadow Run, Ohiopyle, PA; Size 20 black zebra midge. This is a stocked stream so it’s a hatchery fish, but I’ve caught plenty of wild browns and none of them were nearly this colorful.
girlfriend caught this trout and I thought it was just a normal Brown, but looking at its fins it looks like it has some brook trout coloration. Is this hybridized at all?
Today I caught my first trout on my fly rod! After grinding multiple spots out near me that are stocked with trout, I finally landed this little guy! Thanks to everyone that responded to my previous post on me being super discouraged that I couldn’t even get bites from trout. Caught this stocked guy at a pond with a green wooly bugger.
Size 4 mouse heading with a full box to a good client of mine. His box includes a bunch of size 4 Mini Jimmy’s, a deer head streamer, and what i am naming the Brunch Money (articulated lunch money built slightly different).Funny enough, the hardest part about this fly was putting the little ears o...
This article, like many I’ve written, began with a conversation I had with my brother, Tom. Tom and I are brothers separated by a mutual hobby. We both love to fish but in very different ways. Tom gets after bass on gear. A skill I respect but don’t especially prefer. I suck with a gear rod and it’s just not the experience I enjoy.
I want to try to go trout fishing tomorrow but I’ve never gone and I have these lures for pan fish and other things like that and I just wanted to know if these would work for trout fishing I also have some live worms I plan on bringing with me. Also any tips or tricks?
Waded upstream and caught a few browns and a bunch of brookies on panther martins. Current was really ripping though. Thought I was gonna head downstream a few times 😏
I have an Atlantic Salmon trip coming up so I’ve been working on preparing for that most evenings recently. My 7yo couldn’t sleep last night so she joined me at the vise and spun up her first undertaker. Good chance this the the first fly on the tippet for the trip next month.
When I cleaned the fish there was not much in the bulge area. Some small green squiggly looking stuff that might be eggs but not many. It’s possible there was liquid in the bulge but not positive as I cleaned on grass.
I was talking with a friend the other day about doing some fishing in Colorado, his home state. This is a good topic to bring up if you are trying to lure me into an extended conversation. Colorado is near to my heart. He was throwing out places we might fish and said "I know you love the Dream Stream, but I hate that place".
Went out chasing the tiger of the river, the legendary Golden Mahseer… But the river had other plans.Ended up landing a Gardi (Labeo dero) on the fly - not what I came for, but honestly, one of the toughest, most rewarding catches I’ve had.Sometimes it’s not about the target, it’s about the surpr...
Can’t find any info on the sink rate for the Fast version but thought these look ideal for my streamer fishing on the river for trout, and even useful for swinging wet flies. Also the built in welded swivel looks pretty handy for easy tippet changes and avoiding line twist.Have a 5wt and 7wt rod, ...
Back in 2013 Kent Klewein and I were in a tire commercial. I was encouraged by a reader to reshare this video from 5 years ago. It seems like yesterday but our readership has grown so much since then that plenty of you have not seen it. If you have, please excuse the old news. If you haven’t, take a few minutes and enjoy some cool fishing footage.
Title. I was fishing a logjam the other day at my local creek and a larger fish for the size of stream I was in (probably a good 14 inches) was routinely torpedoing itself straight out of the water. I've seen smaller fish do it during a hatch, but there weren't really any bugs around and I thought that the larger fish were more wary when rising.
I have been filling orders for salmonflies and trying to tie my own at the same time 😓 I never want to miss this hatch and they are going off on the Yakima right now
For context, I’m going to catch brook trouts for the first time and have no experience. I’m planning a trip to northern Quebec for fishing but I’m not sure if it’s a good time for catching trouts. What’s your experience?
My buddy and I are getting into fly fishing. We have been doing ok with our skills in stocked waters and having a blast. We would like to try getting after some wild trout (class A or wild designation) near central PA. To add to the fun, we want to pitch and tent and take in the wilderness.
Read more about After a week and a half of trying I finally landed this guy on a white trout magnet. Not my largest but my first golden. Getting this guy mounted.
Just finished tying this brown rabbit fur streamer. The natural fur has incredible movement on slow retrieves — perfect for bass and pike. Can’t wait to test it out this weekend! 🎣
Booked a day of fishing in Scotland while on vacation to the River tweed, a river known for housing large brown trout, grayling and salmon. I’m primarily a salt water angler so the realm of trout fishing is pretty foreign to me, but I ended up hooking into this fish on a 2wt sage ESN and he screamed down river probably 40 yards.
THE STASH IS BACK! Rob "The Stash" Smith is back to share one of his favorite redfish flies with us. The Rusty Enema is a proven producer anywhere redfish are found. It's a great attractor pattern that pushes a lot of water, which is like ringing the dinner bell for redfish in dirty water.
Hello all,I’m embarking on a trip to B.C. to fish for bull trout this summer around mid June. I’ll be in the Fernie area. To give some context, I’ve already gone on 3 dedicated bull trout trips that were a week long each and have not landed my first bull yet. I’m trying to find a safe bet.
Native range golden, South Sierra wilderness. Pulled out several of these using trout magnets on a standard hook. A real thrill to catch these in their native habitat.
Hello there,Im pretty new to trout fishing (I've only gone once before), and I'm wondering how do I catch a lot of trout?Im going to a privately stocked pond where they stock the fish twice a day. On Saturday (when I'm going) they will be stocking 5 trout and 5 rainbow trout per person.
Fly only rivers and lakes nearby, and just a ton of trouty waters in every direction. Most of these fish were caught about 10 minutes from my house. There’s cutthroat, bulls, brooks, lakers, browns, whitefish, and some salmon/steelhead opportunities all within 45 minutes.
In this week’s “How to Tie” feature, Cheech with Fly Fish Food ties a dry fly that should be in every trout angler’s summer box, the Flavilinea Sparkle Dun.
I’m thinking about taking my dad to NZ around Feb-Mar. We have been talking about doing this for over 20 years, but life always got in the way. He’s 70 now and this is probably our last chance to make it happen. He’s in decent shape for his age, but he has low injury risk tolerance (wading deep, climbing down embankments, etc).
Read more about Lost a grayling this size or bigger then a while later caught this one. Maybe same fish idk but took me for a run way down stream on the 3wt.
I just started tying streamers. I've tied plenty of nymphs and dries but had never got into streamers. I started trying to catch bass at the lake by my house and wooly buggers were mostly catching crappie.
Feather Craft Article link:https://feather-craft.com/blogs/fly-tying-blog/the-rising-price-of-tungsten-and-what-it-means-for-anglersHey y'all, I found this article pretty informative, and thought it would be of interest, as well as make for some good discussion.
I’m quite new to tying and would appreciate feedback and tips and tricks for nymphs.First three rows are zebra midges sizes 18, 16 and 14. The shorter ones are tied on Hanak BL500 and the longer ones on Tiemco TMC100.The fourth row are pheasant tails.
There is one fly shop within an hour’s drive of my house, and their customer service is not great. There is a Bass Pro/White River shop close by, but the selection is dismal.Who is your favorite online retailer? I happened by Risen Fly in Beaver, PA when I was on a business trip in that area, and love their shop and customer service.
By Chris Dore Things are hotting up in Southern NZ and to many Southern locals, this means Willow Grubbing time! Willow grubs are the larvae of the Saw Fly (Pontania Proxima) , and pupate within those angry red blisters found on the leaves of willow trees.
I had the opportunity to hit the water for about 3 hours this morning. It was fairly slow as far as the fishing was concerned. I was fishing a small lake that just had a 3 day trout tournament fished this last weekend. I landed (3) 12-15” rain bows and this nice 6lb 3oz rainbow.
Hey yall, just got into tying, I now have a Renzetti saltwater traveler, a bunch of tools, resins, materials, and I need a good bag/case to organize it all for storage and travel! I did score that little bass pro bait binder which is great for the materials that come in smaller bags, but not so m...
My dad was a professional photographer and avid outdoorsman. He passed from cancer 200 days ago leaving me over 18k photos. I made a sub to share them with the world, a photo a day until I’m old and grey.
What’s going on everybody, wanted to come by here and get y'all's opinion real quick.Me and my friends are taking a backpacking trip here soon to the wind river range in Wyoming.
I took both the lure rod & fly rod out today. I bought this rod in February & have never really used it besides 1 20 minute session a few days ago, but I got too frustrated & picked up the spinner again.
After tying this parachute BWO emerger, the peacock herl body broke near the bend of the hook. Would y’all trim it off and [literally] cut your losses or leave it as is and see how it fishes?P.S. open to any other feedback, I’m still pretty new to this with maybe six months of experience.
Read more about A few fish from the river today. A small brown trout parr on the spinner followed by a beautiful brown trout. I managed to catch my first fish on the fly today too, a small salmon smolt..
Bonefish are on the move! Presenting your fly to a school of bonefish has to become second nature. There is often not time to make a plan. The successful angler is one who can make split second decisions and place the fly quickly and accurately. It's a little like shooting a shotgun.
https://youtu.be/gcRGHgezJAg?si=K8QcgpdA82HEh0J5Maybe a bit old fashioned nowadays but the E-Z body sandeel is a great imitation and well worth it's place in your box if you fish temperate waters where sand eel are found. Great for stripers, European Bass, sea run trout and other species too.
I use the 1/64th oz. Trout magnet jig head (I like gold) tied to 2-8 lbs. fluoro carbon leader (I use 4lbs. or 5lbs. PLine fluoroclear) use lightest bobber you can that still allows you to see it well and cast far enough. (I use the pink 3/8 thill pencil bobber, spring bobber).
While fishing for panfish and the occasional carp, I snatched this 30cm (12inch) beauty. On a corn, in a pond with no trout stocking. Must have gotten flushed down here during our big 2024 floods. Rainbows are not native here but get stocked to suitable creeks or rivers. Made my day.
I had three hours of down time before work so I decided to go trout fishing. Every time I put a rig back out the other got striked (I missed around 2-7 fish)
Season 4, Episode 01 – Ali and Bobby head off on the final leg of their British Isles tour to a lake in Essex to fly fish for trout – next is the main event at Grenville in Cambridgeshire, one of Britain’s premier carp waters that has an insane stock of carp …
Hiked down into Linville Gorge to spread some ashes of my best friend that passed last year. We always loved to fish together. Caught this bute in his honor.
In certain circles, it feels in vogue to criticize the way fly fishing guides go about their business. Just like with any profession, if you’re looking for things to poke at, you’ll find them.
"THIS IS THE KIND OF BONEFISHING THAT RUINS YOU. THE KIND OF FISHING THAT IMPAIRS YOUR ABILITY TO MAKE GOOD DECISIONS." The sky is a perfect robin's egg blue. Reflections of the morning sun dance on the underside on the mangroves giving the bright green leaves an unnatural glow.
The bow of the skiff rises and falls under my feet as my eyes scan the vast expanse of blue and green. We call this riding the bull. Balancing on a casting platform as the boat bobs and shifts in the surf. Out on the ocean side, that’s where you find migrating tarpon. These big fish push past in schools, often single file.
In the old days I ran a hedge fund. That’s right. Half a billion dollars doing whatever I told it. Big trades, big profits (and losses) and big pressure. I learned a lot from a decade in that role that has helped me on the stream.
By Chris Dore Angling ethics and on-stream behaviour are a big deal here in NZ due to the unique qualities of our fishery. Gin clear water hosting sometimes less than several fish per mile mean that if you walk past, there’s a good chance they will see you and spook to cover for the remainder of the day.
THE OTHER DAY I RECEIVED THIS EMAIL FROM A READER. *** "Just wanted to bring up an issue that has been eating at my soul for years! I just can't wrap my arms around the thought of using a bobber.
If you have never fished the Green River below Flaming Gorge, its time to check it out. Located in the northeast corner of Utah, the Green River is one of the premier tailwaters in the country.

THE TELLICO NYMPH IS A SOUTHERN CLASSIC. Named after the storied North Carolina river where it was proven fool big browns, the Tellico Nymph is a southern as moonshine and just as effective. It's a simple impressionistic fly that works in any size, although #10 is a favorite.
By: Alice Tesar My outdoor gear is always put to the test when I take it for a spin with my toddler. Recently my partner and I were fishing with him at a local spot that has a wide rocky bend. We let him play around, eat a few rocks, and investigate sunbathing snakes while we got some casts in.
In this week’s “How to Tie” feature, LiFliesMike ties a fantastic baitfish pattern just in time for the spring striped bass migration, the Kinky Muddler. Learn How to Tie This Fly: Difficulty: Difficult For many anglers on the East Coast, spring means happy trout and the emergence of hatches and sustainable insect life.
How do you find and catch trout on days when there doesn’t seem to be much action? When the river looks like it’s boiling with rising trout and you’re having to wipe the BWOs out of your eyes just to tie on a fly, it doesn’t take a degree in entomology to catch fish.
Is there a link between vinyl records and fly fishing? I'm prepared to make a completely unreasonable argument. Whether or not you agree with it, it might actually help you catch more fish. If not, it will absolutely make for a better music listening experience.
Stocking trout refers to the practice of releasing young or adult trout into rivers, lakes, or ponds to supplement or enhance local fish populations, typically for recreational fishing purposes.
By Louis Cahill This easy fishing knot will help you catch more fish. I learned the Double Figure 8 Loop Knot when I started getting serious about tarpon fishing. It quickly became the go-to knot for all of my saltwater and streamer fishing. I even use it to attach nymphs from time to time.
"I thought you might like these," my brother Tom holds out an old yellowed envelope. "I found them going through some of Pete's things." William Starling Cahill, who preferred to be called Pete, was my Grandfather and the man who taught me to fly fish.
“TWITCH, TWITCH, STOP!”, EXCLAIMS MY GUIDE, EDUARDO. I’ve heard these words all week and now it's just become second nature for me as soon as my dry fly hits the water. I have to admit though, it's been extremely effective. We’re taught as newbies to focus on presenting our fly on a drag free, dead drift and that's great.
After 20 minutes in the river, caught a snag with my streamer and gave it a tug. Now I get to replace a blank for my Echo Lift. After having it for 3 years and snapping it twice (could be me, I don't want to disparage Echo, I'm still new at fly fishing) , maybe something more sturdy is in order.
I’m pretty new to fly fishing. Today I went to Sipsey Fork in Central Alabama for the second time to try to get some trout. It was a beautiful day with no wind and the current was not very strong. I found a hole where trout were surfacing pretty continuously however I could not get them to bite on anything. I tied on everything in my box.
hello y'all, here is the first native brown trout of this spring from a creek in the northern Appennini. Just wanted to read some of your opinions its mouth looks a bit odd and has a scar near the tail. Anyway released, I know under wich rock lives.
I SPOTTED THIS LITTLE GUY IN A HATCHERY SUPPORTED STREAM IN NORTH CAROLINA AND FISHED TO HIM UNTIL I CAUGHT HIM SO I COULD GET A PHOTO. While not common exactly, deformities like this are not unusual in either hatcheries or in the wild but you seldom see a 'special' fish like this in a wild stream.
Caught this nice brown whilst hiking for 6 days along the famous Overland trail in Tasmania, Australia. The other pics show the sky I was fishing under & then some of the rest of our hike.Everyone seemed to be counting grams to drop for the hike, whilst I had all my trout gear in my 23kg pack, ha.
Posted my first pheasant tail yesterday got a couple comments of thread protruding too far back. Took notes and tied another one would love any feedback as I’m brand new and only tied a handful of flies in my life.
I know what you're probably thinking, "Come on Kent, you wrote another freaking post about the importance of stealth for spooky trout? Yes, I did, but this isn't your average stealth post. Most of us already know spooky trout require anglers to move slow and quietly.
So after yesterday tying my first ever flies being a simple midge and getting so much encouragement from you guys I decided to give something more difficult a shot. This is my second attempt at a pheasant tail, humbled me a lot! Local attractor pattern from the Bow River. Usually tied on a short shank but I don’t think the fish care. One of the easiest patterns ever, flash tail and micro straggle body.Maybe a boatman? Maybe a micro leech?Either way it works.
The air around me is hot, still and thick enough to breathe with a knife and fork. The edges of my hair are damp with sweat. The bow of the boat bobs gently under my feet to the steady "bloop, bloop" of the push pole. All around me the world is a blue-white cyclorama. The sky sopping up the sea without a trace of horizon.
Is it me or do all streamer boxes just look like we throw up all of our streamers into a box! I just tried reorganizing it and it’s just a pile of feathers and hairs haha.
In western PA around me we actually get a decent amount of trout stocking. But that being said are there any native around in the beaver and Lawrence county area? It would be super cool to see
Was out past dark at a local lake and couldn't catch a trout to save my life. Before the sun set, I caught plenty, but after dark nothing seemed to work.Any tips for what I need to change to catch trout (in a lake preferably) after the sun sets?
I spent 3 hours in my favorite spot today, just absolutely trying everything I possibly could to catch *anything.* Start of hour 4 rolls around and a guy walks up to me with a Tupperware of bread balls. Turns out he feeds all of the stocked trout with bread from his lunch every day.
Had a good session today at my local Stillwater trout fishery. I don’t usually fish for stocked Trout but I had that trout itch & the river is currently flooded by 1.2m.
Today my new line arrived, I have ordered it to improve my casting distance on my BFS combo.I use this setup mainly to fish for trout in ponds with medium or high fishing pressure and medium to low visibility. Now my question is since this is only 0,08mm braid in a low vis color, do I still need a...
By Daniel Galhardo I believe fly-fishing is first and foremost and excuse for us to spend time outside. And it is an incredibly good one. But, deep down it is truly nature, the environment where we find ourselves, that keeps us going out for more.
I can’t sleep. So excited. Day after opening weekend I saw a beautiful stocked golden in my favorite spot. I had to skip today, but I’m out at 7am and I just can’t sleep. Oh trout, how I love thee.
Went to the shop last week for pheasant tail fibers. Had two packs at home the whole time.My tying room is a disaster and I have no clue what I actually own until I'm digging through everything.
In this week’s “How to Tie” feature, Davie McPhail ties a classic pattern that has brought more trout to hand than possibly any other, the Hare’s Ear Nymph. Learn How to Tie This Fly: Difficulty: Easy This pattern has made several appearances in this series through variations, but surprisingly never for the original design.
Read more about Caught this rainbow a few weeks ago and got some good reference photos of him under water for this painting. Arkansas River Trout, Oil, 20” x 16”..
Recently bought some Hareline small plastic rattles for fly tying, but haven’t seen much info on them or patterns that incorporate them. Wanted to see if anyone else ties with rattles and if they see success with them? Also would love any other general feedback.
I have a few Rapala minnows that I'd like to use for trout, but they are treble hooked and removing/adding hooks seems pretty difficult (I spent like 10 minutes trying to get the treble hook back on after I took it off).
Grew up fishing in Florida, so 90% of my tying has been big saltwater/bass bugs. Going to Montana this summer and had to start learning how to actually tie bugs. How am I doing? Any advice on how to improve or must have patterns? What do you wish someone told you when you started tying trout bugs?
THERE ARE FEW GUYS OUT THERE SQUEEZING CORK WITH THE ANGLING CHOPS OF TOM ROSENBAUER. Tom is the author of nearly two dozen books on fly fishing and too many articles to count. Add to that his podcast and posts on Orvis News and it's fair to call him one of the leading educators in the field.
Can you pros shed some light on how to approach this?I was standing across closer to B throwing some live salmonfly type of bugs expecting some little 6inch redband trout when a ~4lb monster took it right at about A.
I wasn't paying attention the other night and took a chip out of my standard jaws on my Renzetti Traveler 2300. Can I replace these with the Presentation 4000 midge jaws? I know there are traveler midge jaws, just figured it'd be nice to mix it up.
I've been enjoying tying streamers lately, and it's about time I start learning how to tie the ones with deer hair heads. I've never tied anything with deer hair, so I'm looking for good patterns for starting out learning how to tie with deer hair.
I’ve started flipping rocks at my local stream and I’ve struggled to find information about aquatic insect identification and what patterns I can tie on to mimic the forage I find.
I’ve was doing a fur dubbing then switched to floss for less weight and water retention. I thought I’d try a goose biot. Any thoughts or suggestions….?TMC 100, black 70D, gray saddle hackle tail, gray goose biot, gray dubbing thorax. Coachman brown and grizzly hackles, white calf tail wing.
Mine is Antonio's Emerger, it feels like anytime there's a hatch, I can always count on em. I don't wanna be a one trick pony tho, any suggestions for flies I should look into tying?
These are my favorite streamers this year. Last year i fished the single hook version and had way too much fun.Whats been your confidence fly this year?
by: Landon Mayer On many Colorado tailwaters, such as the Fryingpan, Blue, or Taylor, a good Mysis pattern is money. With so many Mysis shrimp patterns on the market, finding the best one can be problematic. Many lack the movement and color of the natural crustaceans.
I've been getting into trout fishing and want to bring my fly rod from MO to CO for a fishing trip. The catch is my wife and newborn are coming with me. Are there any good places to stay and fish close together? We're going the week after Memorial Day. Also looking to hike if I could get suggestions for that too.
I love trout fishing and have caught hundreds of them at this point but this one on my new fly rod was one of the funniest for sure. I was using a small black streamer in a small creek. Had a lot of fun can’t wait to hit the trophy section of the river next week!!!
I know this is nothing near accurate but I’ve wanted to start tying salmon flies and ran to hobby lobby. Got my feet wet by looking at a picture and guessing. What are the best inexpensive materials to get to start tying some more accurate ones?
It's my first season nymphing. Currently training at a local pond. Today I noticed there are lots of bloodworms, tiny tan midges, and these green caddis larvaes. I think I got the size about right (it's a bit short but I don't have longer hooks and I want to keep this #14 or smaller for roach).

I'm in wisconsin.creeks by me have brook trout and browns in them.I've been reading posts for about an hour and just figured I'd ask. looks like rapala countdown has the majority vote for being the best or HD dynamics.
Anyone use these for trout fishing? I have one of the Blux versions & haven’t used it yet. I’ll hopefully get trout fishing Wednesday, on the river for wild trout if the water drops enough (it’s flooded, 1.3m atm compared to usual 0.25-0.35m) or my local stocked pond.
It's your lucky day. You've somehow managed to get away from your busy work schedule and find time to spend a few days fly fishing for beautiful cutthroat trout out west. You've brought several trout to hand fishing a series of S-bends, and you feel like a hero.
This fly was absolutely killing it the last two days. Caught 11 brown trout 6-13" long and one rainbow about 12". I ended up loosing it after 8 or so browns and the rainbow. I really want to get some more or something similar to replace it.
Been looking for a starting trout pole and have a bass pro gift card. want something at a budget rate as I’m just starting and am not too picky just want reliable. Have bass fished and have a decent rod. I seen this rod and know its for Kokanee and I have some nearby but will primarily be fishing off the shore or on a boat but not trolling.
Been getting really into tying the past few weeks and finally got a chance to take them to the water! It was a super slow day but towards the end I found a few killer pools. Pheasant tails did well, but the other patterns I tied didn’t get any love!Need to order some more feathers and get into production mode now.
went to a paylake yesterday and we cought a ton of fish. two really good sized ones. this one was 66cm and my colleague even cought a 70cm giant.Rainbow Trout, 66cm, almost 4kg. Cought on a passive rod with Libra Lures fatty worms with strong cheese scent.
By Louis Cahill When you hook a big bonefish in the mangroves, you only get one shot at landing him. Half the reason we target bonefish is that they are such powerful fighters. A relatively modest bone can put you in your backing several times during a fight.
I am a huge fan of Pat Cohens legs. He also has a book (Super Bass Flies) I highly recommend getting if you can. I’ve tied well over 75 of his deer hair frogs dialing the original pattern in but changing it a little bit to suite my needs. These are a lighter weight version of his flutter frogs that can be thrown on a 6-7 weight fly rod.
My girlfriend and I have a little fishing series on YouTube. Thought you guys might enjoy, we caught a few nice brown trout on flies. Mods- please delete if this sort of thing isn't allowed. Thanks!
Some context: I am very new to fly fishing but not new to fishing in general. My Rod and Reel is the 5wt 9' Orvis Encounter with a 9' 3x leader on a Rio Gold line (I spent too much money on my line I think).
Something about the coloration, segmentation, and features they provide are just so exciting to me.This BWO Emerger (size 16) with oversized (sz. 14) light dun hackle uses an olive turkey biot.
Barron county here. supposed to be snowing and 34 degrees, but i don't care 😁 creek im going to has some fine browns and brook trout. loading my backpack with a few survival supplies and some panther martins for an all day hike. checking out a new stretch I've never been on before, so hopefully its navigable.
I know there are brook trout in the brook, but it is really cloudy and swollen with melt. Normally, it is crystal clear. Is it worth trying, or should I just wait for it to subside?
Hi, just getting into fly fishing and looking for some flys to get started out with for trout. I’m in VA and was wondering if this is a good option? Has anyone had experience with these or this brand and is it with the price? TIA
The Lunch Money had been a staple fly in my box for the past 10 years. These flies are great at imitating small panfish, a staple food source for giant fish here in the Ozark’s.I‘ve caught countless giant bass with this fly and it’s even my favorite gar fly.
Three consecutive PB browns from the same hole upstream from the Texas Hole boat launch combat zone. The smallest took a black zebra midge, the last two took something my cousin in Montana tied for me (last photo)(not the actual fly used, the one in the photo still has a barb).
So I’m new to trout fishing I have done mostly salt water fishing and fresh water only for large mouth bass but wanting to do trout fishing in a lake (North Carolina) where I will be going camping and I wanted to get into fly fishing but decided not to since a good rod is somewhat expensive and I...
Like a lot of kids, I spent most of my adolescent summers chasing bass and bream on the local creeks and ponds in my area. Most days, a single rubber-legged popper tied to the end of my leader, was all that I needed to catch fat bream and the occasional lunker bass.
Moved up to NW ONT for school and started to target trout in the Thunder Bay region. I've caught some medium-sized Lake trout and some 3 -5 inch rainbows on a fly rod.
Tied up nice and buggy with UTC olive 140 Denier on a Dai-Riki 060 with bright green herl, lemon lime flash, olive hen saddle, olives hares ear dubbing, and olive rabbit zonkers. Lightly weighted with some .020 lead wire to get to the carp in the pond at my local park.
I was fishing stocked trout in a small stream in Montgomery County Maryland the other day and the trout were rising frequently at dusk. I am not sure what they were eating. I saw one mayfly looking bug but do not think that was the main hatch. I would like to try to fly fish but do not know much.

By Bob Reece From still to moving waters, members of the Chironomidae family abound. As a result of this, they are frequently found on the dietary menu of trout. Having a diverse selection of imitations for this family of insects can greatly increase your chances of connecting with fish.
https://youtu.be/UevFAKWBhek?si=kiDnPZ8JuI762 U9An older pattern nowadays, certainly underrated. Trout to tarpon eat these and everything in between. They're durable, easy to tie and 100% foul proof if tied right.
Long time lurker, but first time posting. Im new to fly tying and am looking for suggestions for assorted boxes of beads that provide a variety of sizes and styles (off set, slotted, countersunk, ect.). I would also love some advice on sizes I should focus on.
Great day to fool some big ones. Took this buck on a local freestone with a black streamer. New York State.“There are no safe paths in this part of the world. Remember you are over the Edge of the Wild now, and in for all sorts of fun wherever you go”.-J.R.R. Tolkien
I mostly fish large rivers and lakes with an 8wt and 6wt TFO (love them). When I hit the smaller creeks I go to a 5wt glass rod (very noodly) which I like very much. But I have access to some very narrow and brushy creeks with trout and smallies (that get little pressure) and wonder if I should go a little lighter and modern to enjoy these fully.
Made a dumb mistake replacing a 5wt trout setup with an 8wt and didn’t switch the reel out. Bought it cause I liked the but had the cork on it. Have a new 5wt coming so what reel should I buy
My dad surprised me with this nice reel my brother and I gifted him back in the late 90’s/early 2000’s ish. He doesn’t fish anymore and I’ve been really into trout fishing over the past year or so. Have plenty of ultralight spinning and bass setups.
Quick question how far back do you trim your rubber legs? This was my first real streamer and articulated streamer at that. I am pleased for my first go.
For the last ten years, my early-season routine in Western New Hampshire has been identical: freeze to death in a damp sleeping bag in the back of my Tacoma, wake up with a stiff neck, eat a cold Pop-Tart, and stumble into the freezing river by 5:30 AM.This weekend, my non-fishing partner decided to tag along with the dog.
Hi all!today is the first day of the fishing season in Nova Scotia and I was hoping to get some tips for a trout newbie.I usually fish Williams Lake (Herring Cove Area) and Grand Lake (Sambro Area) as well as their rivers and streams. I have been told by acquaintances that they hold trout but i have yet to catch one.
I have been throwing the idea of getting an inflatable around but wondering how many drift boat-able trout streams there are in the MN, WI, or IA area. I know there are plenty of small mouth, and Muskie opportunities, but for the purposes of this post I’m only wondering about trout streams.
HAVE YOU EVER MADE THE MISTAKE OF CUTTING OFF YOUR DRY FLY OR NYMPH RIG AND QUICKLY TYING ON A STREAMER TO TARGET A BIG FISH? You know, when your too lazy or in a hurry to take the time to upsize to the appropriate tippet size generally called for with streamers.
I’m looking to fish steelheads soon. The rain is hammering this week and they’re heading up the damn after I’m sure. I’d like to know which of this you think I’ve got the best chances using.Edit: I know these are less than ideal. I was gifted some OSLO lures I’d planned on using from Mishawaka Lure and Tackle Co.
I am looking at getting a Stillwater rod for fishing for rainbow trout in BC interior lakes. I already have a 9’ 5 weight, but have been kicking the tires on a Loomis 10’ 4 weight.
I'm relatively new to fly fishing and mostly fish stocked stillwater trout these are all my dries and emergers. has anyone got any more recommendations?
So I am fishing opening day in Pa with my girlfriend,She doesn’t wade.So I am looking for a pond or lake in south central Pa near Shrewsbury that is stocked with trout.I am willing to drive.New to fishing in Pennsylvania.Any suggestions would be appreciated.
This post is long overdue. This was the weekend of February 21. But just wanted to share some of the awesome photos we got and the fish we were able to jump. I was with the boys from the Ole Florida fly shop in Boca Raton, Florida. We got lucky because the wind knocked down, and it wasn’t awfully cold. We ate well, drank well.
Stand up with me here streamer guys, you know what I'm talking about! First of all I am in no way making light of Ms. Parks courageous acts or life of service. She is on my list of personal heroes and that list is pretty damn short.
So I am going to give as much information as you may need (feel free to judge my life decisions) P.S. IF YOU JUST WANT TO SKIP TO THE TWO QUESTIONS I HAVE SCROLL TO "QUESTION ONE"I work remotely counting salmon and from ~end of May through ~mid-August I have HOURS of free time.
Just ordered my first couple of pheasant tail feathers and I’m not sure if I got a couple of bad ones. Are the fibers supposed to be kind of matted and slicked down? The photos online showed much fuller “fluffier” feathers.
A settlement has produced an amended Environmental Resources Permit for a proposed rock mine in Florida's Everglades Agricultural Area, clarifying the project's approved scope and requiring new permits for any expansion—but the project survives, and Army Corps review is still pending.
I did take the precautions before handing this fish, but I do know now it is always better to use a net. This will likely be my last catch ever...I am pretty bad at this
The brown trout were loving the San Juan and squirmy wormies this weekend. I got a few on a frenchie jig, too, but there was a clear preference for the worms! The purist in me likes to go with the classic San Juan worm with the chenille body, but I keep hearing that the rubber jiggly/wiggly squirmy wormies are more tempting to trout.
I live in Maryland just two days ago our wonderful spring stocking program dumped over 800 fish into a few close by sections of Seneca Creek. Brown and golden trout. Especially near the access point it is very crowed on the opening day I tried throwing spinners and trout magnet plastics with a bobber. The second day I tried original power bait.
By Jeff Hickman IT'S TIME FOR THE BIG BOYS. With the rapidly increasing popularity of Spey fishing, targeting Chinook salmon has also recently become hot. These large powerful anadromous fish have always been attractive to fly fishers in areas with strong populations.
I was told it couldn't be done. That this fish in this system was the holy grail and I would never find it. I caught a wild steelhead on the Squamish River 2 weeks ago before the river blew out. Not a big chrome, but my first chrome, and the most special fish I've ever caught 😊
Since everyone knows foam flies are the best flies(Bluegills know it). I am looking to tie up a mess of different bugs, gurglers and terrestrials. I am hoping to cut out the bodies on a buddies diode laser but I don't have any files.
I have always been interested monitoring ships and air traffic around the world, especially since 9/11. On that day I was fishing for salmon out of the middle of Lake Michigan, a very clear day and I noticed every jet in the sky was turning into a different d…
Caught limit in 1.5 hours all on black buzzer 3ft under a floating daddy longlegs. Last bigger 3ibfish was on an orange blob fished roly poly. Lovely trout tandoori for dinner.👍

Study the stream bed, brown and green. Through ripples and reflections, we find rocks and wood, maybe a shining piece of metal someone has left behind. Even the flash of a flake of mica in the sand, no bigger than a fishes scale. How is it that we miss the trout.
I decided to try my hand at fly fishing back in December and bought a 9’ 5wt and a 7’6” 3wt. After a few unsuccessful trips I finally caught a few brown in Hot Creek in California on a recent trip to the Eastern Sierra. The afternoons of practicing fly casts in my front yard paid off.
Which color do you like better as a tan caddis? The Fulling Mill “tan” dubbing seems too light to me. 1 is Golden Olive and 2 is tan.Meant to be more of a super buoyant dry for dry droppers than natural looking though.
Haven’t done much fishing since high school. I used to fish at a local pay lake that stocked trout. Back then it was just me my friend a couple rods and some power bait. Can anyone catch me up on the modern day necessities for shoreline lake trout fishing.
I'm planning a three feek mottly solo drift, from Great Falls Montana to Fort Peck dam. Three weeks? Sleeping on a bid decked white water boat. I'll pivk up an outboard motor at the head if Fort Peck Reservoirr. 80 miles of lake is a bit too much do riw.On the way down I want vo eat Channej Cattish.
Back in 2006, I spent a season guiding in Alaska at Mission Creek Lodge. It was a great experience and a hell of a lot of hard work, but I held my own and ended up representing well for Southeastern fishing guides.
I am pretty new at fly fishing, so my gear is limited. I picked up a reddington edc 5wt and cheeky drip 375 which can handle 5/6 wt. I am from New england so its primary use for me is trout fishing. However, I am going to Florida from April till June and want to use it down there for some bass fishing, if feasible.
Hey Y’all! I’m relatively new to tying and would love some feedback on some flies I’ve been tying so far for my summer trip to Montana. Any constructive criticism would be greatly appreciated!Mil-Spec PMDCorn Fed Caddis - OliveBig Bug Hopper
If you were fishing for trout out east and were new to tying, what is a list of materials you’d buy to tie flies for that scenario?Starting from scratch.
Made some Lures based off the Mukai B-Chatter and it did some work yesterday when they stocked a pond by my kiddos school. Started slow... Wanted other lures at the bottom. But when the temp warmed up and the sun was out..
"The pond was full of those great lily pads, and I guess that's where the problem started." I guess I should be happy, but I'm not. Ever since my in-laws moved to South Carolina the compulsory visits have had a silver lining. I discovered a little bass pond just down the road.
What are people's thoughts on this? There is a known spot on a local creek that gets stocked and every year these trout seem to all sit in one little hole the size of SUV. I got there and there were two dudes fishing it so I walked up stream where I knew there were no fish but figured I'd practice casting and maybe they'd scare one up to me.
Hey guys, I just got into fishing and really enjoy fishing for Rainbow Trout off a kayak in local rivers. I also want to be able to do some shore fishing though and go bass fishing.
ELATION, PANIC AND EPIPHANY. THAT'S THE USUAL ORDER OF EMOTIONS WHEN AN ANGLER LANDS THEIR FIRST BIG TROUT. I had the pleasure of seeing a dear friend land his first trophy trout recently and I think that's a pretty fair description.
Should I avoid fishing this "winter" level runoff in Southern Idaho? I imagine spawning will be more difficult, but are there specific precautions I should be take? Obviously, obey regulations.
I went out to a popular river this morning and saw a spot I could clearly see fish(trout) from the shore. They weren't moving around much, just kind of hanging out at the bottom. I waded in about 10-15 feet downstream at an angle from the spot I saw the fish hanging out and began casting.
Fished a stretch of a Colorado river today. Could see a ton of fish, and some were rising sporadically.Earlier (1pm) I landed two fish with a small olive bugger, but that seemed to turn off.Eventually I was watching fish rising… tried dry droppers… tried nymphing…. Even broke out the squirmy wormy of shame.
Like other salmon species, cherry salmon (masu salmon) have jacks. They can be distinguished from fully riverine individuals by their coloration: resident fish have spotted patterns and turn black in spawning dress, whereas jacks lack large spots and their spawning coloration resembles that of sea-run fish.
How am I doing? The first picture is my first go and the second is one I did today. Any tips are greatly appreciated.I'm using the White River deluxe fly tying tool kit.
Me and my wife are planning an 8 night trip out to Idaho in September. What are some of the best streams, creeks, and rivers to hit while we’re there? I would really like to snag a nice trout or salmon! We can do a multi day trek to a location as well.
"Yamame" is a dwarf riverine form of cherry salmon/masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou). Almost all Yamame are males, and they participate in spawning with sea-run females. On Sakhalin, we call them "podkamenka" (literally "under the rocks"). They inhabit mountain rivers in large numbers and bite well on all types of lures.
hey guysI have started to paint my own spoons.do you have colour recommendations I could use to make my set more versatile?I also work with heat transfer foils.I mostly fish for trout in put and take lakes.thanks and tight lines!
I want to go looking for brook trout this year. They stock them a few places in my general area and they are native in some waters in the Jefferson National Forest as well. I plan to try for both.Normally I am targeting smallies and stocked rainbows in the creeks in my area, sometimes catching redeye and bluegill as well.

Damn it if this isn’t hard af, my first time swinging flies. Decided to head out and see if I could find anything before the rivers close for good. Managed to line up a good window with a heavy rain that pushed some chrome upriver without blowing everything out.
Due to unfortunate events fishing on my lunch break today, I find myself in need of a new spinning rod. More often than not I fish BFS but today decide to try the spinning rig, and the top half of my rod went down the river. So now I’m shopping.
Tied on a 4/0 hook, I live about 90 minutes from the Falls and this pattern caught my eye when I was flipping through The Salmon Fly. Less tail and more throat next time I tie it, shorter in the wing too.

Fall is one of the best times of the year for fly anglers wanting to target big smallmouth bass on reservoirs. Particularly if the lake impoundment has good populations of shad, blueback herring, or other native baitfish.
Now 1 month into fly fishing and consistently catching fish every trip. River season closes in a couple months so then it’ll be a new learning curve learning how to fish lakes. Tight lines
Best day on the river of my life. Landed a 23” male brown after casting a jerkbait about 10 times into the same hole underneath a fallen tree. The big boy took it so hard that I almost dropped my pole. After a 10 minute fight, he was on the stringer destined for my wall.About an hour later, I hooked into quite possibly an even bigger fish.
We may earn revenue from the products available on this page and participate in affiliate programs. Dry fly fishing is an addiction. Watching a trout rise slowly from the bottom of the river to slurp down your perfectly drifted fly does something to your brain that makes you instantly want more.
Nine months after a single brown trout photograph triggered one of northwest Montana's most urgent fisheries investigations, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks says eDNA testing found no trace of the nonnative fish—but the agency isn't standing down.
Tarpon rolled all around me, while a bull shark cruised off to my right. Further up the shore, a pair of dolphins slammed mullet into the bank. A half-hour before, a manatee floated close enough I could have reached out and touched it. This was about as far as I could get from my trout […]

Biggest brook trout for me! And some others !I’ve spent countless weeks and hours trying to find a big brook trout and a stream that could hold one. Most of these streams are small and most wouldn’t even think there are fish greater than 2 inches in them. Let alone any.The stream I went to was somewhat remote, and took a lot of walking.
A new PB!I posted yesterday about a small seatrout I caught that meant an incredible amount to me. After loads of sessions, that trout brought back a bunch of confidence and I was so proud. I decided to head out today again, with my newfound confidence.Well, what do you say? Following yesterday’s example, I knew I needed to find warmer water.
We made it out to our local State Park today and had a good day. I fished a vintage glass rod that my dad found in his house and gave to me. My casts got a little sloppy with the slower action but I love how the glass feels. My only knock against it is the weight, it feels like swinging a bat compared to my modern 9ft 5wt fast action.
Picked myself up a new reel at my local fly fishing shop! Super excited to get back out on the water and try and get my first trout on my fly fishing set up. Caught a couple of small bass and bluegill last season.
By Paul Pucket FISHING WISE, I HAVE NEVER HAD A YEAR LIKE THIS ONE. I am fishing in places I have never fished and feel very lucky to have the opportunities. The main difference between this year, and the prior years spent chasing these mindless, slimy, instinctual creatures, is that I am limited to one fly. All year. The Everglades Special.
Missing link has been a favorite for a while now for drakes and caddis. Decided to adapt it for our skwalas and the fish heavily approve . Too lazy for the original hackle and denser wing to float a dropper but the wigglers don’t care
My first trip to Pyramid LakeI only recently got serious about fly fishing, and I jumped in on a club trip to Pyramid Lake, home of the Lahontan Cutthroat. Huge, beautiful, amazing creatures. I wasn’t able to get photos, but imagine standing tail deep in water with dozens of 5-30 pound fish swirling around you.

This fish means so much to me! After countless, and I mean COUNTLESS sessions spent hunting these spotty silver torpedoes (30-40 sessions) without me having any good results to show for it, I FIIIINALLY caught one. This is a sea-run brown trout and it’s nicknamed the fish of 1000 casts here in Sweden.
I am wondering if anyone knows or could guess at jack Shaws chaoborus pupa pictured here. It's very different from modern patterns and I'd love to fish them this spring.
Went out with a hopper dropper today bc I’ve been seeing tons of grasshoppers and it’s warm and windy. This guy hit my dropper fly and I didn’t even realize it. It was a scramble to get control but I landed him! Switched to a little popper after and got some gills.

Went for carp and catfish wasn't getting anything so put a worm on and caught the biggest trout for me this year and the smallest trout I think I've ever kept. He swallowed it.
By Louis Cahill How do you connect your leader to fly line when the pressure is really on? This is sure to be a lively topic. I wasn’t aware this was such a hot button topic until I published an article by Devin Olsen titled, “Making The Connection,” and watched the comment section light up.
Curious if anyone has tied a pheasant tail variant like the one at the top. Played around with them this afternoon and like the look, but I’ll be curious to see how they fish.
What should I be throwing here, sorry for the video being short and bad, it’s a pretty fast river, splits into 2. (It’s to the left you can kind of see it) I’m pretty new to trout fishing and have a spinning rod. This was last time I went and I only took a few spinning lures.
So what is the best lure for trolling with no downrigger? There is a lake we hit up and they rent out boats . What is the ideal lure . This lake also has striped bass but they plant one to two thousand lbs of trout every week
i noticed Baetis is recommended for trout around New Mexico and i've never tied or fished one so i tied a few. here's a size 14. i used pheasant for the tail, legs and wing case because that's wha i have. stripped peacock herl for the body. gotta improve the taper...also check out this moment, i pulled in a little snag and found this...
By Louis Cahill Are you walking past the fish of the day? From where I’m standing, in water that barely covers my boots, I can see the next pool. A beautiful bend, dark green and lazy, with a big submerged log on the outside edge. A little riffle at the head, pouring into a deep pool. It’s the perfect picture of the old fishing hole.
Before I get beat up on handling these fish, I was with my 6 and 8 year old fishing for stocker trout. Lesson learned: always be ready to catch anything. They were quickly released after a fast picture.Fishing a popular, well stocked creek, we managed to pull out 4 really nice Gila Trout.

Thanks to the few people with good advice on DIY trips to the Coyhaique area a few months ago. I’ve just finished a week in the area and am happy to add some observations for what it’s worth. There are ridiculously high numbers of tiny trout that becoming frustrating once the fun wears off.
I haven't gotten stuff for fly tying yet but I want to get started with it and I'm new to fly fishing overall I live in sweden and the main species would be stocked rainbows and wild brown trout what are some beginner patterns I could tie for these?
Does it really matter that much for my rod and reel set up?I use my Shimano Nexave 4000hg for just like eveything, bass, Pike, walleye, creek chub etc, so it does have 25-30 I’ve test on it.do I NEED a smaller reel and light set up for trout?
The maruta are entering the rivers of Eastern Japan now. The run isn't in full swing yet, there are enough fish around for a good day's fishing.7 Had a surprise carp too that certainly tested the 4x tippet and size 16 jig hook.

I'm going on a trip to Kauai, Hawaii at the end of April and looking to fish Anini beach and maybe another flat.I don't have experience fly fishing fishing saltwater, but I'm a fairly experienced in trout waters.
I had a short window to get out the other evening so I targeted some likely water on my home river, where I can almost always get into fish. Starting at a bend in the river, I rustled up some rainbows and whitefish on a double nymph rig; then switched over to a pine squirrel jig streamer and moved upstream to a glide under a cutbank.
By Louis Cahill IT'S TIME TO MAKE LIKE CAPTAIN NEMO AND GO 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA. Sometimes the only trick to catching fish is getting the fly down to their level. When you're nymphing and you're not catching fish it's always a good idea to add weight before changing flies. Often one split shot is the difference between fishing and casting.
i have sooooo much to learn but i’m overall pretty satisfied with this one. I def need smaller ostrich herl what im working with is the massive plumes.
Got a vice and just started tying. Tied a couple zebra midges, some poor looking scuds, and some goofy mop flies. Any videos, books, or tips that really helped when you were first starting? Thanks!
Researchers from six countries gathered at the University of Nevada, Reno to map conservation priorities for five imperiled taimen species—and drew sharp parallels to the Lahontan cutthroat trout's own decline.
This is to replace my 10yo Simms guiding boots. After reading a lot negative feedback with regards to the recent decline of Simms gear quality, I opted for this one. I have high hopes that this pair would last longer than the Simms. Can’t wait to try them on the next trip.

Specifically rainbows, there are no browns in this lake or any of record that I know of . How will you go for them? It’s a large lake up to 50 feet deep . What is the best bait to use ? No boat I may add
The translucent body on these with the subtle flash underneath imitates the gassy shell of the chironomid as it emerges through the water column. The root beer bead as the thorax gives it the wing sheath look you see on the actuals while giving it more reflection and shine as the sun cuts through the water and finds the fly.
A Note from Leighton Phillips (@fatbuffaloflies): “I had been seeing a few multi fish/umbrella rigs from different people I follow and following a literal fever dream (where I dreamt about this fly). I decided to try and design and tie it.

MIDGE PATTERNS CAN BE REMARKABLY EFFECTIVE FOR TROUT. Depending on how you count them there could be over a thousand species of midge. That's a lot of choices for the discerning trout. There are almost as many choices for the angler and a midge obsession can easily get out of hand. I find that more times than not a Blood Midge will do the trick.
Hi!I recently got a Maxcatch Gold 7wt floating line. Mostly for testing, but also for trying trout fishing in rivers/small lakes. I'm not rich, so splurging for a 4 or 5wt kit is not an option yet, considering how I 90% of the time fish in saltwaters. But the end goal is to buy a 5wt rod. My question is...
So I love bonefish I love all the saltwater flats fish but I live in Cali so I don’t think there’s any flats near me but lots of lakes whats the equivalent to flats in freshwater?
Hi, long time fisherman, and fairly new to centerpins, I've been having a blast learning this new technique, but I have some questions and I can't seem to find any answers online. Let me set the stage, so today was my 5th or 6th time taking out my pin setup and I was drifting a more calm section of a large creek filled with stocked trout.
Hi All, still new to tying but hoping to home make all my flies for this upcoming trout season. I’ve already tied a ton of wooly buggers, EHC, PT nymphs, and zebra midges (plus have the supplies for the Adams).

From our trip two weeks ago—back when snow still covered the ground. But spring is around the corner -brook trout were rising to dry flies, and snakes have begun to stir.Take it easy and get out there.
I try to tie some flies every day. I should probably make it a series on social media because I just love tying flies too much. These are relatively quick ties, the hardest part of these was coloring them.
On a run these days - just finished a box for baltic sea trout for an upcoming holiday. Most patterns are derived from patterns seen on the global fly fisher blog. Shrimp patterns, sandeel imitations, baitfish and such plus a couple of attractors. We'll see whether they hunt 😂
Hi guys. My local river trout season just started today, I’ll be heading out tomorrow evening for the first cast of the season. The river is quite high just now & is moving quickly.
Some of the many fish I caught a couple of weeks ago at Patagonia Baker Lodge. Didn’t set any records, but all the fish were solid, and made us work for them. Nymphs, big & small dries, and streamers-all worked! A fantastic place and people. We even got a copter flight in down to the lodge.
Caught my personal best steelhead yesterday. Just shy of 30". I'd guess she was legit 7-8 lbs. Fresh chrome that still had sea lice and full of eggs. Sorry about the trash pictures...my buddie's phone didn't cooperate too well.
Things are heating up in our DIY fly rod build. Matt Draft is back for the third video in our seven part series on building your own fly rod. In this video you’ll learn about tip tops, how to spline a rod blank, wrap your guides and get everything aligned.
I’ve been trout trolling mostly from my first kayak since November and chasing trout up here in Nor Cal.Checked out a new spot and finally had one of those days were as soon and you drop your gear it’s getting bit.
Spent about 3 hours at some Trout Unlimited land that I’m building a disability accessible fishing ramp for and caught 35 trout. I originally posted onr/flyfishing, but a lot of people were being rude and it got taken down.
The weather has been nice for a week or two so today I headed for the first session of the year. Expectations were low since I had never fished this early into the year.My plan was simple: two rods, 7wt streamer rod with intermediate line and a couple woolly buggers and a 5wt with floating line for nymphs and dries.
Playing around with game changers and deer hair. Any advice to make them better would be appreciated greatly! I am wanting to build heads that push water and create vibrations to attract bull trout. Very fun flies to build!
The remaining trout in our community ponds may not last through next week. I have to travel an hour or more to get into them from my town. Gonna missthe easy access until next season!
2 size 4 b10sRabbit strip, ice dub, flash, and deer hair.I lead wrapped the keel of the front hook. I almost always do this with all my streamers.Sits just above 3in long!I really prefer fishing small creeks but the past few visits let me know the fish aren’t in the smaller creeks yet.
Caught this beauty the other day under a waterfall in a fast moving creek behind a few homes. As far as I know the town by me has stocked brookies in the stream, and I've seen tiny browns among the chubs in here as well
By John Byron It’s a thing. Gear Acquisition Syndrome. GAS. The most you can use at any one time is one. One guitar. One fountain pen. One fly rod. But how many you have is N, where N is a much bigger number than one. That’s GAS. The concept and phrasing, GAS, came from the world of music. Yes, how many guitars, pickups, mikes, etc.
Tucker, named after the Tuckaseegee River in western North Carolina, floated many streams and kissed many fishes in his 12 years with me. He’s seen everything from tailing redfish in South Carolina, smallmouth in Ohio, tiger trout in Utah, brown trout in Montana, even the elusive bull trout in Oregon.
I used to have a Diamondback All American 6ft 3wt 2pc, but it got stolen in 2006. It was perfect for fishing tight small overgrown New England brook trout streams.Diamondbacks canned the model. Shortest rod they offer is 7.5. Any suggestions for a 6ft 3wt?
Hey guys ! I'm in the process of buying waders with socking boots, but I can't decide which type of boot to get.I'm a complete beginner; I only fish in rivers in Canada, and I won't be going to the sea. I only fish some small fish here and there. I've heard that some people use hiking-style boots (with ankle support) with their waders.
I am starting my second full season of fly fishing and spend a fair amount of time on the Cape in the summer (usually early and late summer). An older neighbor recently gave me two rods that he used to use for striper fishing; 8 and 9wt Orvis rods and a Battenkill reel.
Excerpted from The Orvis Quick-Start Guide to Fly Fishing, by Philip Monahan. The book is not a comprehensive guide. It is written to help you achieve an initial level of competence, to provide the basic instruction and know-how that will allow you to enjoy your first forays on the water.
Anytime I tie flies that I really like, I seem to always take them to work with me the next day just to mess around and figure out what I want to change or just admire the work. Can you spot the mistake I made on one of these?I’m also a huge fan of Andreas Anderson. If you don’t know who that is, look him up and be amazed.

Been out of fishing for a few years, lost a few of my trout rods while moving, looking for suggestions for a good reel to put on a 5’ ultralight rod I’m gonna use for small rivers/ streams
Woodworking has taught me a few things about fly fishing. Before Gink and Gasoline I was, for a time, very involved in the world of woodworking. I was fortunate to photograph and spend time working with some of the most talented folks in the field, many of them are still great friends.
Hey!I’m getting ready to shop for this spring my trout fishing. I’ve always used Powerbait and have had success. When I first started fishing, I tried Panther Martin but had no luck - however, it’s not like I really gave it a fair shake.
Just wanted to say that I had been buying strung Chinese saddle hackle for my wooly buggers, I was getting tired of the feathers being just slightly too short and having to tie in another feather to make a single wrap with on the collar.

I'm wanting to get into fly fishing, as I'm going to the Smoky Mountains by Cosby Creek in Tennessee. I'm just uncertain whether I should get a 4 or 5wt rod for trout and panfish.
SLACK IS NOT YOUR FRIEND. When fly fishing in saltwater, keeping the slack out of the system is job one. Slack can cause missed fish, long distance release and even refusals. A tight line is key at every stage of the process, but many anglers overlook the initial presentation.
Hey all, been fishing a 5wt on rivers and lakes for my entire tenure. My local is mostly lakes, apart from a small creek here and there with tiny browns.
After a mixed range of 2-6 weeks I went right in the middle and froze some chicken feathers my friend gave me. Yesterday I still wasn’t sure what to tie up so I said to hell with it let’s find a wet fly that I think might look sick. I present to you the very first March brown spider I’ve ever tied.

Hi all. Just playing around with some old black Whiting Genetic Spey Hackle after a neighbour asked me to do a box of Steelhead flies for her son.The stuff right off the cape is pretty wimpy.
A Note from Igor Slavik (@igor_slavik_): View this post on Instagram “Hey guys, the idea for the video came to me after leaving the river after a day of fly fishing. I was filming with my go pro mounted on my chest while climbing over an electric fence.
How often to you think anglers miss opportunities catching trout because of the lack of stealth? The more educated trout populations are in a stream, river or lake you're fly fishing, the more important it is for fly anglers to mimic the way a hunter stalks game in the field.
Since my first post was well received (thank you all for the positive comments), I thought I'd share some more photos of Sakhalin fish. This is a collection of photos of Dolly Varden trout (Salvelinus curilus), one of the most common fish on the island. It can be found almost everywhere.
New to western fly fishing. I picked up a Clearwater combo recently, and I'm excited to head out when trout opens here. I have noticed however that the movement of the rod will cause the reel to turn slightly back and forth producing a click as it spins regardless of how tight the drag is set at.
I'm looking for an 8wt fly rod for largemouth bass, throwing Clousers and poppers... the standard LMB flies so a fast action rod would be good. I was also considering the Echo 84B.
Read more about River season opens up in 5 days, Finally got everything together ready for it. Trout lures, Salmon Lures & A good set of flies. It’s been months since I was able to catch some brown trout🎣😆.
Looking to go trout fishing at night ( happens to be the easiest time for me to get to the water) if anyone has had success fishing for trout at night could you give me some tips?
I was just admiring a recent catch a made and got curious about the particular coloration it had.A quick google search and I stumbled upon a condition that happens with fish called “Black Spot Disease.” Should I be concerned and inform my local wildlife and game commission? DID YOU KNOW THAT 10% OF THAT NEW FLY REEL GOES TO SUPPORT FISHERIES? It's true. Thanks to the Pittman-Robertson Act of 1937 and the Dingell-Johnson Act of 1950, a 10% excise tax on all hunting and fishing equipment goes into a trust fund to support fish and wildlife management.
Here’s another fly that was tested out. I can’t remember the name of this fly but it’s a nice musky fly. I am in love with the action for bass.Thoughts, opinions, critiques are always welcome!
I’m curious if anyone else has experienced this or knows what may cause it. My friend caught a trout with an interesting wound on it. It appears like extra fins. Could it be some type of infection? Wondering if anyone has any experience with this.
My first attempt at this pattern! One of my goals this year is catching carp. The book “Carp on the Fly” told me this was a go-to pattern so I followed Brian’s tutorial from Mad River Outfitter to get this hook up presentation.
I want to share the salmon fish that we catch on the island of Sakhalin (in the Russian Far East). In the 1-4 photos, the fish is Salvelinus leucomaenis, which is also known as Sakhalin char/Siberian trout.
I come to this Creek often at lunch time to walk. There's fresh water clams, water snakes, but never seen a fish. 25' wide, knee deep. Talked to guys who've said they've never caught fish. But it's apparently healthy. Just seems odd.
When it comes to fly fishing for trout, I’m a complete streamer junkie. No matter where I’m fishing, what hatch is happening, or what flies are actually working, I’m always looking for an excuse to tie on something big and ugly and go searching for a monster.
Some fish turn into goals you measure seasons against. For Kieran Hoffman, the chase for a true double-digit largemouth had followed him for years. He’d come close, but never on the fly, and after more than a decade of casting and learning, it started to feel less like a dream and more like unfinished business.
The blizzard was bad enough that I considered heading back to my in-laws’ rather than continuing the drive. I’d been there all week, though, staying with them while on a work trip to Utah.
Caught my first fish yesterday on my new fly rod. This is my 4th time out since I got into fly fishing in December and yesterday was the first day I caught a fish. Was using a copper john and a strike indicator. Caught about 7 bluegill in a 30 minute time span.
By Louis Cahill You can sure catch a lot of trout with no more than ten feet of fly line, but does that mean that casting doesn’t matter? I had this conversation recently. I was fishing a classic, pocket water stream with a friend and at some point he asked me point blank why I was catching fish and he wasn’t.

Wow is there a skill gap in tying flies. And oh my gosh is this fun. For reference I am fishing for bass in semi-murky water. Needless to say, I needed something as weighted as a clousers minnow but with some extra beef. Thus I present to you my abomination of a fly.
Do any of you nymph for salmon or sea trout or have you tried nymphing for them? There doesn't seem to be much info about this approach and it isn't a popular approach in the UK but every now and then you hear about someone hooking one on a nymph or a wet fly, if it works I'm not sure why it wouldn't be more popular.
IF YOU'VE BEEN THINKING, "I LOVE GINK AND GASOLINE BUT I WISH IT COULD BE MORE LIKE JACKASS", THEN TODAY IS THE DAY YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE! There are two kinds of fishermen. The ones who have hooked themselves and the ones who are about to. It's a bad feeling the first time you put a big streamer hook in yourself past the barb.
New to the sport and have a few questions after my fire day out on my own. Previous experience was with a short class at a local fly shop, and a few day trips with a friend.
Getting warmer, won’t have as much opportunity here shortly without putting some miles on the truck. With gas on the rise may be harder than I hoped to chase trout over the spring, so will definitely miss the mornings I’ve been able to get out for stocker season here locally at the community pond.
So i found a class a wild trout stream and i fished it today. I park at a bridge and was getting my stuff ready and a lady pulled up and asked if I was fishing. I said yes and she asked if I was going upstream or downstream. She also had an accent so I didn’t understand everything she said. I said upstream.
The last couple of nights, they’ve been slamming into our windows. So I tied up some simple beetles and headed to my local river. Spring is sprung, the Guadalupe bass and sunfish are eating, and all sorts of treasures are revealing themselves.
Every year, I'm asked by clients, when is the best time for them to come up and experience the terrestrial bite? For years, I kept a terrestrial fishing journal to help me better serve my clients. The journal documented the arrival times of specific terrestrials and when I first started catching fish on them.
These are some size 4 streamers I e been working on lately. Feedback is welcome, I’m kinda just learning to use the materials rather than a specific pattern. Generally trying to imitate small perch.
Do you like catching huge trout? Do you live in the Bay Area? Picture this: snowflakes falling over a trout stream, fish slowly rising to the surface, and you’re the only angler in sight. In an ideal world, every day of winter, fly fishing would look like this, but that is rarely the case.
By Chris Dore So we don’t have any Sea Trout here in New Zealand as many would know them, but we have some great sea run brown trout fishing. Our 'Sea Runners' are just your standard, wild brown trout simply exercising their efficient feeding patterns: they follow the food into and out of the salt as availability determines.
Tying flies for a trip is almost as fun as getting to use them. Researching patterns for a location, figuring out hook choices, and building a box is a rewarding process, especially when the fish approves. I definitely have way too many bonefish flies but that's all part of the process. These were all tied for a trip to aitutaki.
I’ve dabbled with dying my own deer hair before and it came out pretty well. My dad did it before he passed away, and I still have a lot of of his dyed white tail patches they make great Steelhead intruders and streamer heads, wings, props and all kinds of the stuff we love to tie with natural hair.
Finished up this box order of 132 flies in 3 days. Learned to tie a better pats, Barr’s cranefly, made up a cool d-rib caddis pupa. Also did 36 rs2’s in a row and learned a ton!! Been tying for just under a year, definitely open to feedback or suggestions! -Matt

So I’ve been fly fishing for trout around Fife, Scotland for the last year (Wormit mostly with some River Eden failures lol) and I wanted a better way to track trips and conditions.I couldn’t find an app that focused on the stuff that actually matters to me when fishing, so I started building one myself. It’s called Fishable.
Fly Fishing on alpine lakes for trout has become one of my favorite ways to spend a day on the water. There's something really special about making long accurate casts to rising trout on the move. It's very much a team effort between the fly angler and the oarsman. Often you can't just sit in one spot and expect to get shots at rising trout.

If you had to get a rod that can throw dries and indicator rigs, and then one dedicated streamer rod what would your choices be? Upgrading my redington trout classic setup and also getting a rod to throw some streamers.
Went fishing in a class A stream in Pa looking for brooke trout to my surprise thought I finally caught a brooke however realer this in instead is this a wild rainbow ?

I fish for trout with a spinning reel in the Southeast and my typical setup is a St. Croix 6 ft ultra-light trout rod with a Shimano Ultegra 1000 reel and 4lb Fluorocarbon line. I am used to catching 10-14 inch fish, but I have recently discovered a section of river that is holding dozens of trophy size fish.
I fish at a lake where I'm seeing action around 100 feet from the bank, which I cant reach with my gear. How ridiculous is it to bring my 10' surf rod and fling that thing out there into the deeper waters?I'm targeting trout and the lake I'm at doesnt have a lot of rock cover, so I figure they're ...
Caught this fish on an olive wooly bugger in Indian Creek in Jones Mills, PA. There is a tributary that supports a Class A wild brook trout population that empties into the stream not too far upstream of where I caught this fish.
Tied some olive and black wooly buggers a couple of weeks ago. First time going out for the ‘26 season and first time taking my own flies. These are stockers but what a great feeling!

Is there a basic list of materials I should get that will get me started tying a variety of flies that’ll catch me some fish? And also what’s the advantage of tying an intruder with wire vs just using a tube
Slippery bugger didn’t want to pose for a photo but stoked on my first fish on the fly. Caught on the Thredbo River, NSW 🇦🇺on a tan hi vis hopper. Spent a few days over the Christmas period on the rivers by myself learning on the fly but this trip I got to hit the river with my dad and learn to cast from him.
Ive been on a few camping trips with the fly rod and gone home empty handed. I went up to the Victorian high country in Australia to camp for a week recently with the family and was hoping to change that.I tried to put everything i had read into practice on the last fish of the trip, saw a rise and cast out to it.
Season opens this weekend where I’m at and I’m trying up some streamers for the first time as it’s still pretty cold so I’m not expecting a whole lot of dry fly action which is usually what I fish. Not sure on hook size but it’s a 6.5mm brass bead. The only rod I have is a 9ft 5wt and I’m wondering if a streamer of this size is too big for my rod.
The angler-funded fishing challenge has generated more than $130,000 for native trout restoration since its 2016 launch, with 95 percent of every registration fee going directly to on-the-ground work.

The Berkshire Environmental Action Team is pressuring MassWildlife to end its stocking program, citing ecological harm to native eastern brook trout—and invoking the governor's own biodiversity mandate to do it.
I fished last week with my friend Gene. It was in the 50s, bright and sunny, and the wind was strangely absent. Gene was on the oars while I mended a drift down a shelf that’s a hundred yards or so long. Halfway through, without a bite, I asked Gene if he thought I needed […]
By Bob Reece Dunnigan’s P.D. Nymph is a trout magnet. As I’ve moved further into my fly tying and fishing journey, I’ve been blessed to meet some outstanding people. Casey Dunnigan happens to be one of them. A skilled welder by trade, his ability to create with his hands is evident in his fly tying as well.
Went to Michael's over the weekend clutching the hot 40% off coupon for that craft fur I saw here a while back. I wanted to make some streamers/jigs out of it but I also came across some nice iridescent Christmas tree tinsel on clearance for a buck and change so I got a handful of packs.
Decided to have a rod custom made for my wife for Valentine’s Day knowing she would be more likely to actually try if she had something “cute” that is her own.Even though it’s early in the year we drove up to my favorite freestone river as she said she was ready to try it out.
Me and a couple friends are backpacking through the French pyrenees for 2 weeks in August. I am wondering if anyone has had success catching trout on any particular patterns and/or methods in the mountains.
Hey everyone. Looking for some suggestions for gear as a beginner into trout. I fish tournaments and go out on big lakes and ponds for bass so all my gear is really tailored to that.I have a handful of stream and rivers near me I’d like to fish this year for trout on days I just want to sit and hang on the shore.
Molded on the back of a waxy soup spoon.Fabric cement cures in an hour or two. UV resin almost instantly.I know from making molded diving bills too kig is best. All lightweight fly rod motion flures have to be tuned, once, either at streamside or in the bath tub.Tuning means snipping away with scissors or toe nail clippers.
First day of the trout season today - went down to the river (quite high water still) and cast out a 3.5 inch softbait on a 7g head in a dark galaxy color just to get this absolute beauty on the 3 cast.
I’ll have a day to fish the San Juan this week and am looking for some general advice. From what I’ve read sensitive indicator rigs seem to be the most common approach.
So, Ive been fishing for over 30 years now, but I barely got into flyfishing about 3 years ago. One of the main reasons I started flyfishing was because I had gone camping to an area that had only wild trout and did not stock. I fished for 2 full days and didn't catch one fish.
By Justin Pickett As a beginner in the fly fishing world, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. And confused and while meandering aimlessly through a fly shop, or magazine, or a “big box” sporting goods store.
Rented a kayak to go on a nearby river today, and somewhat on a whim decided to take my fly rod (equipped with a standard floating line and wooly bugger) with me and see how it went. Overall I'd say it was kind of awkward, but one fish was caught and I'm interested to try more.
Why Is Fly Fishing So Hard? Fly fishing’s difficulty stems from the complex coordination it demands, blending casting technique, entomological knowledge, and river reading skills. Success requires consistent practice and adapting to constantly changing enviro…
Wasn’t having g any luck with my streamers this afternoon so I threw on a rubber worm and stripped it in till this guy hit. Felt like bringing in a school bus!
Anyone had any really close calls/epic stories from wading? Just had leg surgery and bored so figured I’d start a thread.I’ll share two of mine:1: Was fly fishing a river in Connecticut and was waist deep in the middle of the river (large river), and went to take a step on what looked like a real...
I was not expecting to catch anything close to this size as the fish i usually catch out of this creek max out at a foot length. Had a pretty intense fight with it since i was using ultra light and netting it was a whole other task.
BWO emerger with natural CDC. I ended up tying a bunch of these in size 18 and a couple in size 22 though the smaller ones were tough to cut the butt ends of the CDC close enough to not over hang the hook eye. I need to find some finer tipped scissors.
I'm a Brit living in New Zealand for the next 2 years. Currently working & living at a Wilderness Lodge on the rural West Coast on the South Island.Where we live sits right on a Lake fed by glacial rivers. This lake runs into another river which travels for about 3km before dumping into the sea.
WHEN MICHAEL STIPE, LEAD SINGER FOR THE BAND R.E.M., MADE A STRING OF APPEARANCES ON THE COLBERT REPORT AROUND THE HOLIDAYS I WAS SHOCKED BY HIS CURRENT PHYSICAL APPEARANCE. To be sure, none of us are getting any younger and I applaud Stipe for embracing his graying hair and changing features, but there was more too it than that.
Caught my first trout today unintentionally. Went to a new spot known for trout and bass. Tried to catch some trout first on some spoons, rooster tails, and even tried the new trout magnet kit I got at academy. No luck.
I was fishing lake taneycomo tailwaters today and saw what I think to be a melanistic rainbow but I’ve never seen / heard of anything of the sort. Sorry the pictures are bad. I didn’t catch him just saw.
I wanna get into flyfishing but I do not know what kind of flies I should buy. in my region there is mostly sea trout, Atlantic salmon but also some browns and grayling.
Might go into a slight mourning when my season ends next Sunday with the time change. Really learned a lot this season, had only fished for trout a few times before.
Bozeman rod maker Bill Blackurn made these Doh Gapen style MuddlersIt might have been Dah Bailey who popularized the clipped head incrrnation. Dan was a gift to civilization. But I do still like the original Muddlers best.
Southern California is hardly a freshwater angling destination. When most think of the area, one conjures up surfing, Hollywood, mansions, and sunny weather. The thought of rivers, snow-capped peaks, trout streams, and even animals like bears rarely comes to mind.
First year tying flies and I’m thoroughly addicted. I have one row left plus another annelid… what should I tie next for the row? This box is a mix of a bunch of my personal faves, some more custom than others. Would love feedback!!!!

I want to go to baja to fly fish for marlin, tunas, dorados, roosterfish, etc.Where do you buy gear for thiskind of fishing? Cabela’s and bass pro rarely has any wt 11/12 rods. What is the right setup for rod, line, etc for this?
Totally new to fishing the tribs here in Wisconsin. Im curious what your guys thoughts are about these flys I tied up tonight, are these sufficient for steelhead in the tributaries. Never fished for the Stealys so don't really know what to throw bit ive been seeing alot of bright colors for what guys are using.
I’m getting into the sport a bit more now and I’m looking at getting a 9’ 5wt redington classic trout while I have some spare change but I was wondering how important the reel really is? I’m looking to stay around the $300-$350 total between rod and reel.If anyone has other recommendations please...
I’ve always wondered if I’m able to fish in muddy water that’s chocolate milk colored. Could I just use a squirmy or a black streamer? Or is it not worth it if I can’t even see past 2 inches of clarity?
I just wanted to give a shoutout to these under appreciated river legends. A symbol of the Wild West, inhabiting our rivers for thousands of years. Acting as our canaries in the coal mine, a true indicator of the health of our rivers.
I've been slaying trout in the small streams near Nederland using Panther Martin spinners. I like the black body with the yellow spots. Anyone else have a go-to lure for high-mountain streams around here? Always looking to expand my tackle box, lol.
By Jason Tucker I could not have been more shocked to find myself in the Bahamas than if my spaceship had crashed there. The call came on Thursday. “Can you go to the Bahamas for a week?” “When?” “We leave Saturday.” I checked with my employer, girlfriend and bank account. For once in my life the answer was yes.
Had no luck pulling streamers, switched to the BFS rod and caught 3 over 22in in the last half hour. Slowly twitching a brown Yum hellgrammite on ned rig across the sandy bottom by the weed beds.
I'm going to be in Montana the first week of May to do some trout fishing. I'm flying into Helena and want to walk and wade. Given the possibility of runoff at that time of year, I've decided to concentrate on the Missouri below Holter dam.
Hey everyone!I’m heading to the Bay Area for a work trip in late March and I’ve cleared my schedule for several days afterward to squeeze in some fly fishing.
I caught it this past weekend in Western NC. Is this a really dark rainbow trout or a dark brook trout? I caught it in a hatchery supported lake that’s been froze over for weeks.
Fly fishing streamers: because sometimes trout want a steak, not a salad. If you thought fly fishing was just about delicate dry flies dancing on the water’s surface, welcome to the big leagues—where bigger flies and bolder fish take center stage.
Brook trout are making a comeback in the Adirondack Mountains in New York, according to new research from the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The research looked at streams that were vacant of fish as recently as 1989, due to acid rain in the region.
Construction on a federally funded canal improvement near Del Norte, Colorado, dewatered 7.2 miles of the river, killing trout and native fish across all age classes in numbers too large for a nine-person crew to collect. Biologists say recovery will take three to five years.
I was looking through old pictures from when I was guiding from a mothership in Oman. We would get schools of fish hanging out in our lights at night, and I figured out I could drift little flies to them in the tidal current.Pictured are a Lunar Fusilier, a black tip trevally, a striped fusilier, a flagtail, a wave Garrick/dart.
When you think of trout, you probably picture places like Montana, Patagonia, or New Zealand. That makes sense, because that’s where a lot of modern trout culture lives. But trout did not originate in those places.
When choosing between graphite and fiberglass fly rods, it’s smart to consider where and how you fish. I got an email the other day from a reader. Here’s an excerpt: “I am looking at a 7wt predominantly for trout and smallmouth here in Tennessee.
Hi everyone,I’m actively shopping for a second fly fishing rod in anticipation of next season. I currently have a 5wt setup that I bought last year to target trout and smallies.I’m looking for a second setup to complement it and I’m wondering if I should go with a 8wt or 9wt.
We live in WNC and typically can’t fish to much this time of year. But the fishing down in Florida when we went down there for the holidays was great! Caught this one on a really small ep bait fish pattern. Looked like an Everglades special.
probably my 4th or 5th pheasant tail. I never seem to have enough fibers for the wing case when it's time to make them. my tail always gets messed up too even with the counter tying technique.
“One of the observations I noticed after spending countless hours filming trout chasing damselflies is that they have a much higher success rate when the damselflies are coupled together mating. The main reason is not because they offer a larger target, but more so due to the fact they tend to fly in more predictable lines of direction.
Weather was a bit cold and windy, but we got out there! Did some wade fishing around the Yellowstone near Livingston, and surprisingly had these whitefish go for some streamers?? Never thought that these guys would take a streamer, considering they usually eat nymphs.
A landmark USGS study documents four decades of recovery in 42 Adirondack streams, while a new DEC management plan confronts invasive species, habitat loss, and a warming climate.
THAT NEW DIY FLY ROD IS JUST ABOUT READY TO FISH. In this, the last video of the series, Matt Draft, of Proof Fly Fishing, shows you how to fix some common problems that happen when building a rod. Me and a buddy who are relatively new to the fly fishing world are planning a trip to the snake and Missouri rivers around late June and need some advice.
Have found myself targeting panfish and wild brookies in small creeks with lots of brush and trees more lately. Wanting some opinions on a 3wt under or around the 300 dollar mark. Love my clearwater but wanting different from Orvis just to try another brand as well. Plan on using dries, nymphs, and small streamers.
I recently came on here and asked if anyone knew any European Taimen (Huchen) guides in Montenegro, and I followed up on the one lead and made the trip to the small town of Plav, where I met my great guide, Oki, who showed me around the Lim River.
April Vokey is one of the most recognized, and sometimes controversial figures in fly-fishing. Few anglers have been thrust into the limelight in quite the same way as April Vokey. April is the first to admit that she asked for it, but it hasn’t always been an easy ride.
I’m in eastern Idaho and do alot of trout fishing. Growing up I only learned how to spinner fish and we only used ugly stik. What’s the fly fishing equivalent of ugly stik? I want to get into fly fishing but not sure I want to spend so much money. Thanks
Caught a few smolt this winter but this is my first proper sized fish on a fly rod and my first steelhead/lake-run rainbow. Egg pattern under an indicator on a 6wt.
Weekend project. My best friend since childhood recently got into slow pitch jigging in saltwater. He asked if I could make him a sand eel imitating fly to replace the basic mylar teasers on his rig. Was excited to try because whatever fly I’d develop for myself should slay for his purposes.
So
I recently purchased a 7 foot 63 weight that I plan to use in small streams and little ponds for bluegill and trout. What's some good lines you guys use on a 3 weight rod, I'm assuming just a standard wait forward floating line? Bit open to different ideas. I currently own a 8 weight and a 6 and a 5 weight. This is my first 3 weight.
Debating on which one of these I should get for my first 5 wt rod. I'm new to fly fishing so when it comes to casting action I don't really have much of a point of reference. I already have a 4 wt and a 6 wt.
These are some wet n’ dry soft hackles that have produced consistently for me over the years. They’re meant to be fished on a team of three upstream over riffles on warm summer days in the sort of water that dries and weighted nymphs are kind of useless.
this morning but once you loose contact with your fingers probably time to call it. It is so peaceful to be on a trout stream first thing in the morning With a hot cup of coffee
Hey all just posted this on FishingAustralia but I thought I’d get some good advice here as well.I spent 5 hours today fishing this creek with no luck.I used a #2 panther martin (multiple colours), 10lb braid (not ideal | know), and 6lb mono leader. There's pools up to 3 meters deep (murky) and sh...
I’ve never had a dog who was a really good fishing partner. When I brought Josie home, I knew that was going be be a goal. My dog and me out on the river, doing our thing without any particular plan. It sounds good on paper but anyone who fishes with dogs knows it isn’t always ideal. Ive definitely had dogs who weren't with the program.
Hello strangers on Reddit who share this wonderful hobby with me.Last summer I took a job at a private campground just so I could be close to my favorite trout stream. I fished almost every day after work and I would go solo camping on my off days and fish for hours.
I’m planning a trip the second weekend of June to the Wilmington, New York area to fish the West branch of the Ausable with a buddy. We’re staying at the hungry trout, which seems like a good affordable option close to the water.I’m curious if anyone can share any tips or hints for the areanotrelated to fishing.
The conservation group ties the repeal of the federal endangerment finding to accelerating threats against the state's salmon, steelhead, and trout—and launches a once-a-decade scientific assessment to track the damage.
By Bob Reece As we move toward spring, the presentation of streamers increases for many fly fishers. For those of us that tie our own, the use of some materials is far more common than others. Marabou tends to be one of those materials, particularly in the tails of many bugger style streamers.

Been getting lots of follows but there always turning off it when the weighted streamer drops. So little foam front guy lifts on the pause and the fish approve. Also kicks side to side really nice. Size 4
Does anyone fish at night? If so what do you use and why? I'm gonna be fishing a canal near me tonight but ive never fished there at night. Gonna stick with dark/black streamers and hope that works.
Just a few highlights from a great couple of days fishing in the south of Chile! I’ve been in Santiago for a couple of months while I’m studying abroad and knew I had to make the trip down south while I had a good chance. Definitely don’t regret it.
I don’t really know what I’m doing yet. I’m going backpacking with friends and we’re planning to try and catch trout. I’m thinking about getting the Daiwa Megaforce Travel Rod 2.10 m because it folds down small enough to fit in my backpack.I’d like to invest in decent gear without breaking the bank, but I’m confused about line sizes.
By Garner Reid A GOOD PORTION OF MY FLY FISHING INVOLVES THROWING SOME SORT OF A SINKING FLY LINE. Realistically, half of my time on the water involves streamers and sinking lines at least for some part of the day. If I am not out on the water guiding for streamer-eating fish like stripers, I’m in the fly shop talking about them.
Yellowstone National Park’s fly fishing season has, for years, opened on the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend. That opening date will be moved back to May 1, 2026, for three rivers inside the park.
Several years back, one of my favorite wild trout streams, only a few miles from my house, got slammed with tornados and high winds (from back to back hurricanes that had moved up from Florida). The aftermath from the strong storms, downed dozens, upon dozens of trees along the stream.
From the streamer junkie stripping heavy articulated meat to the technical purist, there’s something here to keep your hands busy and your mind on the water. So heat up the coffee, fire up the UV lamp, and put a few new tools in the box before spring arrives.
Bonefishing, for me, is the purest form of the drug. I’m just returning from the first of three G&G Bonefish Schools in the Bahamas. This trip was more of a reunion than a school, with better than half of the anglers returning for the second or third time.
My daughter is nine months old, and she’s gone through more than the usual trouble with sleep. Between colic, reflux, and coming into the world six weeks early, her relationship with sleep took a while to develop.

During the spring, summer and fall I often get the itch to forget about catching numbers and instead see how big of an attractor dry fly I can get away with fishing and still fool trout. For those of you who don't know, my closest trout waters are North Georgia and Western North Carolina.
The Guadalupe's "Top 100" status is a reminder—especially for anglers outside the region—that Texas trout fishing is not a once-a-year stocking-day curiosity.
Renowned Ozark artist Duane Hada is painting a memorial tribute to Dave Whitlock, the Oklahoma-born fly-fishing legend who spent more than four decades on the White River and whose innovations—from the ubiquitous Dave's Hopper to the Whitlock-Vibert Box egg incubator system—helped establish north...
The new rules, effective February 1, 2026, replace the emergency catch-and-release orders enacted in October 2025 and signal cautious optimism that the White River system can sustain limited harvest while its fish populations recover.
One of my biggest accomplishments so far, the California heritage trout challenge. Fort the first trout, I went up to the Tahoe area to catch the Lahontan cutthrot trout.
Too small for a Golden Stonefli? Too big for a Cadhis? 1" long. Two.materials. Elk hair and a hackle feather bmp (bottom mounted parachute). No name yet. Maybe it's a Short Rib?
Was throwing lures all morning with no follows or hits. Tried something a bit unconventional and was able to hook into this one with two trout worms wacky rigged on a trout magnet jig under a bobber. Close to 15 inches.
Got bored and had access to a while bunch of fly tying supplies. Figured I should likely have a concept of it being the local fly club president. haven't tied a fly since 1993 at the Scout jamboree. seems to have turned out fine, not sure if it would survive a cast. Not sure what it's for.
Caught my first rainbow trout ever in a stocked pond in Louisiana! Really cool that LDWF does it for the communities. Beautiful fish and a fun fight, can’t wait to catch more later this year in Colorado.
By Bob Reece As we move into the fall months, the use of streamer patterns typically increases for many fly fishers. There are many factors that lead to success when pursuing trout with these beefy creations. Evaluating the body language of the aggressive fish that chase these flies can improve your odds of hooking up.
Located in Ohio, and although I have been trying, I haven’t been able to catch anything since New Year’s Eve. Today I decided to ditch work early, and hit the trout honey hole. No keepers, but was happy to end my drought, and get my first of the year.
An aptly-named “snow drought” has much of the Western United States in its grasp, threatening water supplies in reservoirs, and flows in many of the country’s favorite trout rivers. A quick glance at the National Weather and Climate Center’s snow-water equivalent map paints a stark picture.
I have high hopes for these and can't wait to see if they will contend against Mepps, Panther Martin, and Rooster Tails. I will be targeting stocked trout, so it should be fun.
By Bob Reece Three points of contact provide stability. There are a plethora of patterns that new tiers could begin with. Yet three in particular lay out the fundamental techniques needed to create a stabile foundation for your fly tying future. The Woolly Bugger, Pheasant Tail and Elk Hair Caddis have all proven their worth.
My first fish of the new year, I had never thrown my bladed jigs for trout for some reason and decided to try it out. I went to hit my favorite spot and discovered that it was now posted no trespassing.
The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, located in Northeast Minnesota, is a national treasure but is once again threatened by Congressional action to permit industrial mining activities.
Like so many others out there, I've broken my fair share of fly rods over the years. I've slammed them in tailgates, stuck them in ceiling fans and I've squashed quite a few trying to get in and out of my cataraft to quickly.
The late winter and early spring catch-and-release season on the famed Skagit River may not happen in 2026, and not because of too few wild steelhead returning to the river. In fact, the numbers support a limited catch-and-release fishery with no retention of wild fish allowed.
I HAVE DEFINITE IDEAS ABOUT HOW TO CATCH BIG TROUT. APPARENTLY THEY ARE ALL WRONG. Like every other guy or gal with a fly rod, I have some pretty strong opinions about the kind of flies that catch big fish. These opinions are based on years of experience and experimentation.
When winter temperatures settle in, trout slow down—and so must our approach. Success demands technical midge patterns and refined subsurface presentations that can fool even the most lethargic fish.
By Bob Reece Round rubber and spandex are two members in the vast tide of synthetic materials that have washed over the fly tying world in recent years. They have both been used to create numerous surface and subsurface patterns. However, I would argue that one is better suited for the world above while the other thrives below.
As of mid-January, the highly anticipated catch-and-release season on Washington's Skagit and Sauk rivers—a bucket-list destination for steelhead anglers across the Pacific Northwest—stands on the verge of cancellation. The culprit isn't biology. It's bureaucracy.
The three-model collection pays tribute to the legendary saltwater "Grand Slam"—the rare feat of landing a bonefish, permit, and tarpon in a single day.
Winter fly fishing: the challenge many avoid unless they’re passionate, well-equipped, or downright obsessed with trout. But here’s the secret: fish don’t hibernate like lazy bears. They just slow down and get a bit shy, turning us into stealthy river ninjas.
Did you know you can catch trout and tarpon in the same trip, along with exotic jungle species? I didn't either, but Kevin Jackson [42:22] of Fly Fish Costa Rica shares...
