For me it’s chironomids. I fish them for hours, different depths, people say they slay with them, but I’ll give up and throw on a pink squirmy worm and pull out a fish in 10 minutes. Also wooly buggers. Sometimes I feel like I have no idea what I’m doing out there…
Prairie pothole region.Drag and drop method. Black carp maul and squirmy worm weighted fly, pink and yellow. They were not picky. Muddy water with low visibility. Both casting and jigging in weeds at the shoreline.Practice makes perfect.Landed 3, had 5 on. Long hard fights.Remember to bring a big net. Fighting butt for fly rod needed.
Sorry if this breaks the rules but I just wanted to share with somebody. I've been lure casting and bait casting before but I picked up fly fishing around 6 months ago and it's been a thrill.Except, I started to get a little discouraged because no matter what, it seemed like I couldn't even get a fish to notice my fly.
Appreciating the beauty with some underwater footage of this gorgeous alpine lake brookie (it's a still from a video I took, doesn't do it justice). Was pretty quiet all day which was normal for a hot day, but once I put the Copper John dry dropper it was a game changer.
Spent 5 amazing days fishing the Missouri (MT), Henry's Fork in Idaho and the Snake in Wyoming. Big thanks to Moterra Campervans for hooking us up with a sweet ride to live and work from for the week.
Hello everyone!I am a Canadian heading to Ireland for just over a week at the end of July. I am posting a few feelers out there just to get some insight into the fishing scene in Ireland. From what I can see going with a guide seems to be pretty popular however it would be pretty tricky to get one this soon.
Picked up the TFO NXT Black Label the other day and took it out to try this morning at a little pond full of tiny aggressive green sunfish. I had several bad casts, a few tangles when I didn’t focus well, and a couple of excellent casts.
By Devin Olsen I often get asked what I do when I come to water or situations that call for a presentation other than what a straight Euro-nymphing rig executes well. I tend to be a splitter rather than a lumper so I often bring several rods or an extra reel if I want to change rigs.
There’s so many different types of line I’m not quite sure which to go with.I have a 9’ 8wt rod that I use for bass and occasionally pike. I like throwing poppers, streamers, and other flies like in the picture. What lines should I check out? Im in Michigan and I fish mainly smaller lakes and would like to venture into more rivers.
Montana angler looking for rod advice.I bought my first new rod about two years ago, a 9’ 5wt TFO Blue Ribbon. It’s a great dry fly rod and handles smaller nymph rigs fine, but it lacks power on bigger water and with bigger flies.Last year I bought a 9’ 7wt TFO Axiom 2X, primarily as a streamer rod. It’s great for big flies and sinking line.
Hi all, new to Western WA (Seattle area). Coming from UT and looking for places to hit nearby. I only have up to a 5 wt but planning on getting heavier gear soon. No boat so just wading waters only. Can anyone point me in some good spots? seems like the Yakima is popular but tough without a boat.
Hey all, I’m a serious fisherman that goes out when possible most of the time. Right now, I’m not fishing for trout here in NJ with the usual warm temps in July often at all except on early mornings of a cold front. That being said, I fish hard for the rest of the year mostly.
Feel like I got quite a steal on this setup, I don’t think either has been used at all. Posted on here yesterday and heard everyone’s advice about the niche qualities of Spey fishing and I’m excited to try it out this weekend for some bass. Definitely my ritziest setup
I got a permit for my trip down Warner route in late September, staying 3 nights.Would you guys pack waders?I know it’ll be cold in the mornings but if I can get away with not rucking waders and boots I’d like to. I’ve never been to Colorado and the research I’ve done has had mixed opinions on waders.
To use for fly storage (like a tall puck) and as a trash dump container for clipped off tippet or other detritus.I often clip bits of flash, foam, hackle etc. off on the water and hold my fly inside while doing so. Voila. This was an anti-litter and pro-reuse PSA.
By Alice Tesar It might have been the coyotes that kept me awake the night prior. More likely it was thoughts about the section of river we planned to visit that day. I’d heard a lot about the spot and debated it’s worthiness.
Two big cutthroat finned just below the surface, snacking on a buffet of nymphs and emergers with the same carefree attitude of kids riding bikes down to the local ice cream shop.
Long shot but I am trying as hard as I can to find the owner.Thursday, July 9th, I located 3 different fly rods and reels on a 2 mile stretch of USFS road just south of Platoro Reservoir near Conejos Lake Fork Ranch. This is in southern Colorado. Clearly someone drove off down the bumpy road with their rod vault open.
Hey all. Really got into fly fishing in the past year. I still do a bit of spin rod fishing (bass mostly). I’ve been doing a lot of fishing in Frederick and venturing north through PA and NY. I’m starting to explore other rivers in MD and am documenting a lot of my catches. These are all in the past year.
Not a lot of fish, but no dinks either! Some of the better ones. All wet fly takes, oddly no hatches coming off despite warm temps and moderate cloud cover on day two.
It’s getting hot here in NJ and the trout fishing isn’t going so well. Accidentally caught a few juvenile smallies and have since switched to bass fishing. Not looking to get a whole new set up right now but fully intend to soon. Will a 5wt work in the meantime?
From someone who has fished spinners primarily I can definitely understand why people get into fly fishing, the rock bass fought like it was 4x its weight 💀 used a friends setup to try it out, would also appreciate recommendations on some budget combos, preferably for creeks and rivers!
Have you ever lost your boat anchor during a day on the river? If you haven’t, you probably will. Or at least you’ll forget to bring it one day. It can make for a pretty frustrating day of fishing but it doesn’t have to be. There’s and easy and inexpensive way to make an emergency boat anchor. Keep a basketball net in the boat.
I haven't seen a lot of reviews of this kit and I am wondering if it is good for a beginner? Im trying to stay around this price point ($280), so any recommendations of similar or cheaper alternatives would be appreciated! I am looking for a 5wt all around for ponds and rivers (panfish, bass trou...
A note from Jackson Bland (@madisonriverfc) “Salmonfly season is sacred around these parts – where big foam enthusiasts sacrifice sleep and mental health for the chance at one big brown trout confidently sipping a size 4 dry fly.
When a strong fish runs hard downstream too quickly for you to follow, you find yourself at a disadvantage. With the fish directly downstream, the angle of the hook in the fish's mouth is perilous. Any thrashing or head shaking on the part of the fish can easily result in a long distance release.
I’m hooked, I’ve tried a few times but always fell back on my spinning gear. This time I committed, I was determined, I prevailed. I had a few strikes but kept missing my hook set.
There are four species of trout that reproduce in the wild in my county in southwestern Oregon. I went out Friday to explore some new creeks, check out some waterfalls, and find some more dispersed camp sites. The first stop was a creek I visited the week before. I caught rainbows there last week.
We all know the brown trout mousing scene has gotten pretty popular the last few years. I’m curious to know what other night fishing tactics people are using? With the low water and high temps out west I’m sure many of us will be making more casts under the stars this summer. This one was on a black size 14 jigged leech (out of a reservoir).
Was/am so excited and proud of this- I learned how to tie flies about 20 years ago but shortly afterward I joined the military and my tying supplies went into a box. Luckily my mom held onto that box for me and for whatever reason a couple days ago I decided it was time to open it.
Every angler wants to catch a trophy trout and there’s no better way than fishing a streamer. While it’s fair to say that there is no “wrong way” to fish a streamer, there are some proven techniques which will help make that trophy dream a reality.
(Please excuse my crazy eyes, my glasses got knocked off somehow netting the fish.)Last few months been practicing fly fishing for a Colorado trip and really liking it.Just got back and here are some nice trout I caught! I started with a Army Ant (Black with red flashing) and didn't get many hits but a few that never took it.
Looking to get a Lamson Liquid S reel. Do you guys think its worth it for its price point ($160)? And what rod should I pair with it? Debating between a 5-6wt and I'm fine with 8ft-9ft. Thanks.
Hey all, someone broke into my garage last night in Modesto, Ca and stole most of my gear. All of my trout reels are gone. All of packs are gone. All of my fly boxes are gone.
I acquired a random assortment of flies in a box. I know what everything is except this big fat black one.Built like a stonefly nymph, but it's far bigger/thicker than I would expect.
No one in my family fly fished so I picked it up around 2014, just as I ended my Army enlistment. It’s been an uphill battle because I couldn’t find a teacher and couldn’t afford the Orvis school. I needed someone to tell me what I was doing wrong or even what to do. I practiced a lot in my yard. Fast forward starting June 12th.
Thing was a tanker. I’m still bad at taking pics but the top view puts it into perspective. Dude fought hard. Love Browns the most probably. On a hopper.
I bought my first fly rod a couple weeks ago, and I’ve been humbled trying to catch bass. It’s painful watching them blow up all over the place and get completely skunked. On my third time out I tried nymphing for panfish and finally found one dumb enough to take it!
Caught near St. Simon Island, in South Georgia. This was my third trip looking for redfish, the prior 2 trips we didn’t so much a see a single fin, and the fish did not disappoint. Saltwater fly fishing is absurdly fun.
Brown trout, lake trout, grayling, minnow (yes on the fly) and the endangered Souffia (only took a picture, because it's not supposed to exist in the river i caught it).
So much fun when the streamer bite is on! All were in the 12-15” range. It’s incredible to me the small water where fish these size can hold. Last photo is the typical types of trout caves I was pulling them out of today
I posted an image of a dry fly earlier today. Someone said I posted that fly once a week.I'm easy. Maybe he's right. This nearly weightless trolling diver (a Riffle Dart) is just to prove I'm not weird dry flies only.Molded with feathers, UV glue and two pieces of glass.
Nice to revisit this river, where I caught my first ever wild trout many years ago. Water was low and clear. Fish were very spooky, but gorgeous as ever, with bright red spots. After a brilliant sunset, they were happily rising in the slow pools and eddies. In need of rain out here, I hope it comes.
By Bob Reece THE COMBINATION OF SIMPLICITY AND EFFECTIVENESS ARE APPRECIATED BY MANY FLY TIERS. Constructed from three major body materials, the Big Bandit epitomizes this concept. Its simple construction eases the time invested in the tying process while its effectiveness on the water justifies a place in your streamer box.
Hey y'all!Just wanted to share this. I know a lot of us are fans of the Oros Strike Indicators. I found this today while looking for something to 3D print. It's exactly like an Oros, just a slightly different buoyant material. 🙂 I'm pleased with how it turned out.
Loop is a brand that’s not as familiar to American anglers because they’ve largely sold their gear in the European market. You could get their rods here in the States, but only at a handful of dealers.
By Bruce Chard There's only one thing better than catching bonefish. Catching huge bonefish! It doesn't happen by accident, it's a cold-blooded calculation. Even if you have the perfect fly and can make the perfect presentation and even fight a perfect fight, you have to find that giant bonefish to have a shot.
Recently was on a trip and lost this fly rod at the airport😕 It was my first/only fly rod and would really like one of the same model as its what made me fall in love with fly fishing. It was a white river rod from bass pro shop.
I am doing the Western Native Trout challenge and caught this fish over Memorial Day in Northern New Mexico. It was caught in Costilla Creek, but below the fish barrier/managed section (which was closed). I am trying to determine whether it is a pure juvenile RGCT that will count for the challenge, or a hybrid/cutbow.
Went out for my 2nd time this past weekend and caught a nice little trout that was so happy to see me he had a twinkle in his eye and a smile on his face!
I was lucky enough to take a float trip down the South fork of the Snake River this past week and wanted to share. 18" Rainbow and a 19" Brown were the stars of the day, but the native Cutthroat are just so pretty you have to show them off too.
I recently returned to fly fishing after a 10+ year hiatus. My first leader went to the trees, of course, which meant tying another. At the end of the day I broke down my pole and removed my rigged leader and flies.
Hi there, I’m pretty new to fly fishing and was hoping to get some advice on choosing which of these two reels to keep and use on my 4wt 8’6. One was tagged a 2007 England hardy LRH lightweight and the other didn’t have a date/tag and is an orvis CFO 3 made in England.
We are based in Seattle and I’m planning a surprise 5 day fly fishing trip as a family to celebrate his remission at the end of August. Probably will rent a small RV for the four of us. My plan is 3 days fishing with a day of travel on each end. Can’t decide where. Ideally within 8 hours of driving from Seattle.
With the extreme heat here in the midwest, giving the trout a reprieve and spent last evening living it up on my 3-acre pond with my 3-weight.In just a few hours, I landed 15 bluegill between one and 2 pounds These are not hybrid bluegill, but pure northern strain that are supplementally fed protein pellets.
Fall through winter is a busy time of year for trout. Water temperatures are falling, days are getting shorter and big fish are on the move. Among the species that spawn in the fall are Brown Trout.
Started fly fishing a few months ago, and have been fishing on a local, but remote still water alot...just a truly untouched and serene enviroment i like visiting.
Weird to say the least.Today I hiked into an area about 4 miles. I know this river very well, and it goes right behind my house. I specifically go here for wild trout, they’re more prevalent. The thing is, I didn’t catch one. Not even a stocker. I fished 1.5 to 2 miles worth of spectacular water. Deep, fast, and the water was cold.
**inquiry about the Northeast USA, not Nebraska**Hey all,Having an indecisive time with picking an area to fish in a few weeks. I take a 4 day trip somewhere in the Northeast once a year to car camp and fish for brook trout with dog in tow.
When you’re used to fly fishing in the bubbling riffles, foam-covered pools, and easy-to-see buckets and pockets of small streams, going to fish a big river can feel intimidating.
No one grip is right for every casting situation. In general, there isn't enough said about grip in fly casting. I spent the first half of my life with a poor casting grip. I finally ran into a gentleman who helped me find a grip that worked for me but for years after that I never thought any more about it.
I’m trying to teach myself how to fly fish, I’ve watched every video and have been trying for several hours to learn how to cast, yet it’s still absolutely awful.
Not sure if this style post is allowed but I am getting back into fly fishing, I used to go as a kid with my dad in Wales but living in Southern California now and trying to get back into it.
A good double haul is curtail wherever you're fishing. Never more than in salt water. A lot of anglers, however, find it mystifying. Here's Capt Joel Dickyto explain how you can have a great double haul.
Spent the day exploring Montana’s backcountry with a hike into a high-elevation alpine lake in search for California golden trout, then closed out the evening with some very productive dry fly fishing on a creek nearby
I live in bass country, bought a cheap fly rod for the hell of it last fall, and it sat in my closet since then. My family wanted to take a trip to Crested Butte this summer so I figured I’d bring the fly rod. I’m hooked now, and plan to get some fish on the fly in a few weeks at one of my state’s 2 trout fisheries.
So without doxxing myself or the guide. I recently went out on some bonefish flats. In addition to the normal bonefish challenges, we were dealing with 30 mph winds on the flat. This day I struggled to put anything on target (which when fishing bone fish is 10-15 feet in front of the fish) at a mere 30 to 40 feet.
First three are the same fish, had some serious shoulders and definitely one of the heaviest trout I’ve landed. All the others are different fish, then the river, and the fly shop that made it happen, IFYKYK.
Last month I had the opportunity to fish with Bojan Rusjan of Soča Trout based in Bovec, Slovenia. I managed to book a full guided day a few months in advance.I’d read stories and seen videos of fly fishing in Slovenia but nothing really prepared me for the beauty of the Soča Valley and the clarity of these rivers.
By Louis Cahill What do you look for in a fishing partner? I get the opportunity to fish with anglers at all skill levels. Guys who are my mentors and are way better than I'll ever be, right down to guys who just picked up the rod. That's perfectly fine with me. I enjoy learning and teaching.
Found a little bream hole to bow and arrow cast too and my hopper dropper rig was attacked instantly 😂 Fought like a tarpon.I know, fish on the ground, I’m sorry. I couldn’t get them off otherwise…you may be able to imagine.
These little guys were slamming early this morning (White Mtns NH). Must have had 10+ in 1.5 hours out. Best combo was a parachute Adam’s trailered with some soft tackle (last pic). They took both.I’m usually a hopper dropper guy but this combo crushed. Thoughts?
Meredith McCord has caught just about everything you can hook on a fly rod. With 240 IGFA world records, three Ladies Tarpon Fly Tournament wins, and a global reputation as one of saltwater fly fishing’s most accomplished anglers, McCord has spent years traveling the world to chase some incredible fish.
It pays to keep your fly line clean. You can spend $90 on a fly line, these days. It just makes sense to take care of them and a big part of caring for a fly line is keeping it clean. Removing oils and chemicals, like sun screen and bug spray, will make your line last a whole lot longer.
Newish to fly fishing. First set of boots and planning on wet wading with them. With felt bottoms, can I walk a shortish distance (1/4 mile) to the river on pavement? Or should i walk on the grass?Any other suggestions for wet wading appreciated also. Cheers
I inherited these flies from my father and am wondering what these patterns are so I can keep these ones and buy replacements to use.I am also very new to fly fishing and would hate to lose any of these due to the sentimental value.
Hello! New to the sub and new to fly fishing. My grandfather gave me his old fly fishing pole that I *think* is a 3wt but I'm not sure. I have 2 questions. 1.
Dick's Sporting Goods [dickssportinggoods.com] has Okuma Sierra 7/8 Fly Fishing Reel on sale for $14.98. Shipping is free for Score Card Members on orders over $49 (free to join [dickssportinggoo
Took a friend from work out fly fishing for his time. After only 10 minutes of casting practice next to the road he was on the water catching. At least he was nice enough to let me rope in a few.
When fly-fishing means flying to fish, there are a few simple things that can make it a lot more enjoyable. Let’s face it, air travel is an ordeal these days. Even more so when it involves traveling with a bunch of fishing gear. I should know, I do it all the time.
Picture is for reference. I was fishing one of these big deer hair streamers and I couldn’t get it to sink unless I put a bunch of split shot on my leader. It was literally floating the entire sink tip. I was using an SA sonar sink tip in the 5 or 6ips range.
They were all 11-15”, and I got ‘em on dries and a stripped wooly bugger, as in the picture. My spin fishing pal did about as well as I did, 5 or 6 real beauties each.
Learned how to fly fish a couple weeks ago but haven’t had any success until today! I’m so psyched it’s my first catch on a fly!!! And I wasn’t the only one who got lucky today wooooo
Welcome back to Artist Spotlight, a Flylords original series where we dive into the artists that bring life to fly fishing off the water. In this installment, we sit down with renowned artist Paul Puckett. Paul’s work captures the moments and fleeting feelings we experience on the water through captivating paintings.
EVERY JOURNEY STARTS WITH A SINGLE CAST. For some reason, this morning I'm thinking of losing a fish. A big fish and, worst of all, someone else's fish. That's the worst kind to lose. A hundred years ago, when I was still pretty much a Gomer, my wife bought me a guided day of fishing on a private trout stream.
First sea run cut ever, first brook ever, first whitefish ever, first brown on the fly (2nd ever), top 3 bows of the year so far, and first trout on a dry.
I keep seeing posts on here of broken rods almost daily. I’ve been fly fishing for 35 years and have broken only one cheap rod I built(a $30 blank). That blank was defective and brittle.
Read more about Last summer I started Tenkara fishing and really enjoyed it for a while. It got me out on the water and was a decent introduction to fly fishing. It definitely served its purpose, but after a while I wanted to get more into traditional fly fishing. I ditched the Tenkara rod and started euro nymphing.
Our Photographer Spotlight Series highlights the men and women behind the lens who capture the moments that define fly fishing—moments words simply can’t describe. In an effort to shed light on these talented individuals, we sit down to learn more about their story, passions, and journey into fly fishing.
I WATCHED MY SHARE OF GUYS FIGHT TO GET HOLD OF THEIR FIRST BONEFISH AND I REMEMBER BEING THERE MYSELF. IT'S PRETTY PAINFUL FOR EVERYBODY CONCERNED INCLUDING THE FISH. They aren't trout and nothing will bring that hone for you like trying to tail one. Landing them and handling them is really pretty simple once you know how.
I did a 3 day backcountry camp and fish up in the Adirondacks, can't wait to get back there. The brookies were going nuts on the river, a fish nearly every cast. No such luck on the lake, despite DEC leaving a public use kayak 7 miles into the wilderness. Beautiful trip, sad to be back in the city.
This mess was snagged while fishing the Salmon River in Pulaski NY. Grumpy Steve , Don the Elder and I took an oath to never return...in my never humble opinion there are no true sportsmen on that river.
Caught this beautiful cutthroat this weekend on an adventure with my old man. Went to his old stomping grounds where he learned to fly fish. Took a size 16 Elk hair on 6x tippit. Super easy to spook these fish so I was beyond happy when he hit the net. Been looking to catch one like this for years.
Fly fishing for tarpon means battling the sun, the wind, and the fish. Combine all three, and you’ve got a pursuit that can test even the most dedicated anglers. Fortunately, for us, advancements in modern gear can help minimize the strain of standing on a casting platform waiting for tarpon to show themselves.
YOU KNOW WHAT THEY SAY. THERE ARE NO SMALL PERMS. Just perms, and big perms. Happy perms and happy clouds. If you can't catch perms, you can always drink.
A few questions and would love to become more involved here.I previously lived in Missouri and fished spots like Bennett Spring State Park.I now live in Charleston SC and am open to making a decent drive for some good fly fishing. I am also getting into backpacking/camping so happy to treck a bit to good spots as well.
Hey all! I was fishing for brookies yesterday in Maine and it was weird to say the least for me.I fished some streams that entered into a bay in Hancock County. My goal was to get some salters, or at least a few brookies. That didn’t quite work out though. The areas were absolutely beautiful and spectacular but I didn’t catch anything.
Hi everyone, first time posting here. Can anyone tell me what rod and reel this is?A few years ago, my wife and I stumbled on a generous angler who gave us an amazing intro to fly fishing. My wife must have pulled 7-8 trout, meanwhile I couldn’t catch a single thing.I’ve since wanted to buy/build her a setup but have no knowledge to start.
Started fly fishing about a year ago, my dad’s been fly fishing for 30+ years. We had our first trip together to central OR last week. Hoping this is the start of an annual tradition.
Finally had a great day with the trout. I landed 4 and lost 3, including my biggest fish ever on the fly. Just rainbows today but hoping if I keep at it I’ll find some wild browns in this river. Got one on the mop fly today, but then it fell apart so I switched up since I only had one.
By: Alice Tesar You could say that a desire to be a trout bum was in his blood, but you’d be ignoring the fact that Tim Widmer has found his own drift. What was in his family, specifically with his dad, was a desire to live a life that allowed for living off the land and being able to enjoy wild places.
Saw video from a Ohio gas station. Is it even worth trying to fish on a hatch this large? What's your experience with large hatches on the river? I'd like to hear about your time.
Hi everyone, Im posting here and need some advice, my partner (33M) has a government office job making $53K/ year , He hates sitting in an office , he is a pretty inflexible person over all and needs thing in his way to feel happy in life.
Many of you have helped me out a ton on my last couple posts. Thank you all. Today I finally caught some trout. I got 3. 2 on a grub fly because I found a big grub under a rock (Id please idk what it’s called and I would love to buy more, and 1 on a tiny midge that a nice old man gave me under a pink egg.
Got a folding kayak from Oru earlier this week so obviously need to hike it somewhere cool to use it. Went to a stocked pond on a hike that was much harder than I thought it would be, basically just a mile of stairs like pic 3.
So I took a trip to Kings canyon national park for 5 days and Sequoia NP for 1 day. When I got there I followed the rule of if you don't see fish rising throw nymphs. I threw small nymphs because the water is so clear. For hours nothing.Threw on a dry at a bunch of picky browns near Muir rock.
The Big Blackfoot River is one of the most famous in all of fly fishing, thanks to Norman MacLean’s A River Runs Through It. It’s also at the center of a new controversy over mining and data centers in the west.
By Louis Cahill The sun never rises. Not today, at least not here on the Deschutes River. The light is an eerie yellow-orange. The air is hot and dry, and the wind is howling. It’s unsettling. You’d expect it to feel like fog or overcast but it doesn’t. It’s almost the opposite.
I am new to inflatable paddle boards and float tubes. We have two paddle boards but because of my back and knee problems, I can’t stand on them for long.Long story short, Budget is tight so I can’t get a fishing kayak or pontoon right now.Thinking about investing in either a float tube for fly fishing local lakes or just taking my paddle board.
So just did a camping trip. California(start) > Utah (few hours only for sleep) > Colorado (Arkansas River > Utah (Little Hole) > California (finish).Managed maybe 6 ish hours on the water. Colorado I managed 3 browns raft put-in about 10-12”. In Utah that stretch was busy. Lots of people wading and fishing.
I’ve gone out 3-4 times so far, probably 3-4 hours each time. From the bank of a stream, from a pontoon in a boat on a lake, and in waders in a stream. I’ve tried poppers and wooly buggers in the lake, crawfish streamers and nymph on the stream. Haven’t caught anything, which is fine. I enjoy being new and bad at something.
Many of you guys saw and helped me out tremendously on my last post and I cannot thank you all enough. Today I went fly fishing at the same spot again and it was a massive step in the right direction. I made huge improvements to my casting and mending. I also was able to evaluate the stream and figure out what the trout would want.
Have a trip back to see my wife’s family outside of Syracuse on one of the Finger Lakes, and hoping to sneak off and explore the Salmon River, about an hour away from her (as far as I can tell at least). I know the Kings won’t be there, but wondering if it’s worth my effort to fish it this time of year.
Welcome to ‘The Rundown’, an editorial series where we provide an all-encompassing look at the latest and greatest products from your favorite brands in the fly fishing and outdoor space.
Sometimes, wanting too much can get you in trouble on the water. If you set your goals too high and lose sight of the real reason you're out there in the first place (to be blessed with catching a few fish and relaxing), before you know it, you'll find yourself standing in a river feeling lost and heart broken.
I’m looking to do some reading to learn more about trout (such as their behavior, habitat, and history) if anyone has some good recommendations. Bonus if the material covers fly fishing too but not required.I’m looking for something on the more scientific side rather than a literary piece.
Hello, here is a nice brown trout from this spring. We have been making these upgrades for friends and family for some time now. We have found it to be so much more reliable than a jam cleat. This one works with the almost all NRS anchor systems, and we have done special requests for other setups.
By Kent Klewein ARE YOU SITTING AT THE VISE DREAMING OF THAT BIG TRIP OUT WEST THIS SUMMER? I get asked all the time by eastern fly anglers heading out west for the first time, what fly patterns they should stock up on before they leave.
Able to match the hatch as a sulphur mayfly hatch occurred not long after I got on the water. This was my PB Brown trout. Thanks to the man who took this picture for me
Had a cancellation today and managed to get down to my local creek to test a fly I’ve been putting through its paces. It’s been on almost nonstop for the last week.Managed to get a “trophy” cutthroat in very skinny water. It’s funny when a 10” fish is considered a trophy 😂The fly is called aWunderbar.
Years of research looking at little blue dots on maps, long hikes leading to empty lakes with no fish, thunderstorms, blisters and no PTO left to use, all finally led me to catch my dream trout. This was the only fish I caught after a strenuous hike and much planning, and I could not be more stoke...
So, I a looking to get a decent quality fly tying setup for my dad as a Christmas gift, but I have no experience with this at all, do you mind helping me out, if it helps, he loves trout fishing, (I do have a 3d printer, and think I couldmake a good working vise thingy, but any advice here helps!!
I've lived in Southern California for 20+ years and been fly fishing for probably 10 of those. We regularly fish Kernville, both sides of the sierras, Oregon and Washington. I also do semi-regular trips to Alaska. I've always yearned for a good spot closer to home. My buddy was in town and I fished the west fork for the first time.
This has been my first month of fly fishing.I had a major video game addiction and felt unsatisfied with my life. Got rid of the games at the start of this year and decided to pick up fishing again.I live up in northern Utah so started fishing in the winter, it was a blast…..
Fishing a very difficult river in northern nj recently. It’s very shallow and I’ve had a very hard time catching fish since I’m new. It has strong ish current and crystal clear water. Very few holes deeper than 3 feet. Has wild and stocked trout. A lot of people do pretty well there but I am having a very hard time.
Have been fly fishing for 15+ years, did a lot of dry fly only for a while and moved on to euro nymphing for when hatches and rises are non existent. Don’t know which I prefer but love both…until recently I always bought pre made flies and nymphs.Anyway, it’s been a month since I learned to tie my own and really wish I picked up the hobby sooner.
Got bored and messed around with some stuff to come up with this guy. Has what appears to be a pretty good action in the water(bathroom sink makes it hard to tell). Breathes really well in the water though which in theory should get a musky to commit, but they are unreliable fish .
Just need to get this out there for own mental health but sometimes things just go bad and you can’t help but laugh. Not new to fishing in general but have only been fly fishing seriously for about 2 years. Used my last personal day and went out to one of my regular spots and was one of the only people there.
By Kyle Wilkinson Long before the days of Instagram or Facebook, taking pictures of a prized catch was still a big part of the fishing experience for most anglers. As you might be able to imagine, I see A LOT of fish pictures given my current occupation. I also take a lot, too.
Thought I’d drop a mention of Tie-A-Thon here. Many of you have probably already heard of the organization before, but they do a lot of good work distributing flies to charities and organizations that use fly fishing as an educational tool or healing hobby.
Cross-posting fromr/bluelining. I know this sub loves big fish, but these days I’m a sucker for smaller fish in beautiful creeks with amazing colors. Took my kids up to a chain of high mountain streams and lakes, amazing how much variation in coloration between the fish in different sections of connected water.
started fly fishing about two months ago, and have gone out three times. I’ve got all my knots down pat (Albright/handshake/surgeons/clinch/palomar when I can), and good base of equipment knowledge.
Hello, went fly fishing the first time up in northern Maine this weekend with a buddy. Are these small landlocked salmon or trout? Any insight is appreciated, thanks!
Is this a cutbow? Sorry for the poor pic, but I didn’t want to handle it too much just for a picture.Edit: location is Blue River several miles below the Dillon reservoir and north of Silverthorne, CO
Eight wild Brookies in two weekends. First two were in a river last weekend known to contain Sea-run Brook Trout, I am thinking the first one, the chunker on the wooly bugger might be a “salter”.This morning I found a pool in a different river in a different part of the state where I caught six little one year olds, I assume, all on dry flies.
Anyone have them and like them? Or hate them?I know Simms is out of favor these days but I’m looking for some good footwear for wet wading…mostly small streams I hike to in NC+VA. Occasional use along the coast for estuary/sounds.
I’m always looking for ways to get an edge while trout fishing. Trout are incredibly sensitive to their environment. They are constantly on the lookout for both food and predators. In an instant they can go from feeding on mayflies to fleeing an otter or eagle. Or you. Insert yourself, the angler, into the happy world of the trout.
Spent my birthday week with my wife camping In Yellowstone. Didn’t plan to go fishing, haven’t since we moved inland a year ago. But my wife convinced me to buy a rod and gear at the park when she caught me looking at the rods in the store.
Got out to fish one of my favorite streams in WA and its tributaries yesterday. Left at 2 am to hit the water by 5:30. Usually see 5-12 inch fish with an occasional trout over that. Yesterday was better than average. Had a few more over 12” that I didn’t have a chance to get pictures.
Moving to the West has been life altering in regards to trout fishing. Easily my PB wild brown. Not sure I’ll ever be able to leave! Caught on a Half Pint fishing Euro Style, a favorite of mine but time consuming to tie.
Joel Dickey is one of the most dynamic casters I've ever seen. One of the hallmarks of his dominating casting style is truly awesome line speed. It enables him to shoot massive amounts of line and hit distant targets with accuracy, even in high wind. In this video he explains how you can build your line speed.
I have only been fly fishing for a few weeks, and have been teaching myself mostly. I’ve talked to a lot of guides/workers in fly shops and reading on here which has been helpful. My previous best were some 8-10” browns.
in all my years of gear fishing and now couple months of fly fishing i got one (2 for the day). i think the river gods blessed me today with my first brookie being absolutely gorgeous and colorful. also saw the local river otter who spooked the hole i was fishing 👍
Been out a couple times but hadn’t caught anything. Decided last minute to take the fly rod along with me on the blue river near the IN/KY border and hooked all these in about 2hrs. The kayak certainly complicated things a bit thoughBonus: a channel cat that nearly ended my UL rod the same day
Hir/flyfishing, my local fly shop Ascent Flyfishing in Littleton Colorado was broken into last night. If you’re in around this area please keep an eye out for anyone trying to sell gear that matches their description they posted.https://www.instagram.com/reel/DZxYtlAucyu/?igsh=MW43OGZwYmU3aW1rNQ==
In the couple seasons since I've started fishing for trout here in Montana, I've been fortunate to catch tons of good native cutthroat and plenty of rainbows. I've never caught a brown. They aren't super common in the rivers I fish from what I understand, but people catch them, and I can travel to other places they are more prevalent.
Sometimes the fishing is slow, and sometimes that's ok. Sometimes it's overcast and everything just works out for that one perfect cast and you pull a 13" Brookie out of his foam cover.
I was asked the other day what was my favorite species of fish. That's a really tough question for me. Sort of a Sophie's choice question. After thinking about it for a long time I answered trout, for a host of reasons, but I quickly added, "and bone fish"! For some odd reason I then felt like I had to defend that answer.
It’s my birthday this weekend and some of my favorite things in life are fly fishing and sharing my passion with others. So since I took today off to start my weekend early, I went to a nearby lake to take advantage of a weekday off.
So today for the first time I was casting parachute Adam’s onto the reservoir.I had 4 different takes of my fly but didn’t know that I should be pausing for a brief moment before setting the hook horizontally…On a stream I understand you are supposed to set the hook by sweeping your rod downstream.
The first major spinner fall that I ever witnessed and had the pleasure of fishing took place many years ago on the South Platte River in Colorado. I'll never forget the excitement I felt as I watched countless trico spinners floating downstream in the surface film. Never in my life had I seen so many bugs on the water.
I'll start by saying I'm new to fly fishing, so I don't know what I don't know. I've taken a few lessons, have a spey rod, some flies, waders, boots, etc., and recently headed out to a local river for the first time.I had been fishing unsuccessfully, working my way downstream, when I came across what I think might be a safety hazard.
THE PALOLO WORM HATCH IN THE FLORIDA KEYS TRULY MUST BE SEEN TO BE BELIEVED. Tarpon go completely crazy when these bright red worms pour out of the sand by the millions. The fish gorge themselves on worms and quite a few of those worms are cleverly tied imitations. It's the fishing opportunity of a lifetime.
Hope this is ok to post here, but I figured my fellow fly fishermen would approve! I'm very proud of this piece and just wanted to share what I made.I'm also looking for some feedback and any ideas you might have for improvements / modifications. I'd love to hear your thoughts!
Now while it’s not my first ever fish! It’s my first fish in about 20years and first with a fly rod. This was my fourth outing (my first time touching a fly rod was last week) all of which have been to still water reservoirs just getting my bearings.
Spent the majority of my life spin casting and have now completely switched over to fly fishing. I LOVE the minimalism and the challenge. Started with dry flies on small streams, progressed to streamers and nymphing and expanded my activity to bigger rivers and still water.
Been fly fishing for almost a year. Caught this red band on the deschutes during the salmonfly hatch. Hammered the Clark's golden stone dry.Might be awhile before I top this one.
Florida Sportsman is known well for featuring articles on all types of fishing, ranging from fly fishing and other types of inshore angling to fishing done in deeper ocean waters. These articles inform the magazines readers on what types of fish are in season…
By Johnny Spillane SOME OF THE MOST FUN I HAVE EVER HAD FISHING HAS BEEN AFTER THE SUN GOES DOWN. THE BIGGEST FISH IN THE RIVER COME OUT AFTER DARK AND THERE ARE SOME REALLY FUN WAYS TO FISH FOR THEM. If you are anywhere there is a prolific caddis hatch, which is almost everywhere, swinging and skating caddis can be deadly.
Ever heard the phrase, "the geezer hatch is on?" I've used it myself. It's a common way of saying there are a bunch of old dudes on the water. It's pretty common to hear younger anglers and guides grousing or making jokes about old guys who can't see their flies or wade like a mummy in a black and white horror film.
Finally fished a creek I've driven past every time I go to my camp and caught about 15 in 4 hours yesterday. Also got my first double. Hit a blue line today and added a nice native to the total before the rain rolled in.
Went out for about 15 mins yesterday and that's all it took! It amazes me just how much you can feel on the end of a fly rig vs. a spinning combo. I could feel every twitch of this tanks muscles. Fly fishing is definitely the way I was meant to do it!
These two patterns never let me down on tough tailgaters. Most of you are aware that Louis and I just got back from fly fishing and filming our segment for Playground Earth, sponsored by BFGoodrich Tires.
Lost a couple foam beetles but swapped to a yellow jacket and they loved it. Used it like a streamer once it stopped floating. Loving my Ant leafcutter 3wt so far!
Black River, VTThere was a really nice deep riffle with perfect flow right next to them, but not a single trout was in there, they sll sat here freaking out and swimming in circles. They were feeding at all either. Its about 80 degrees but the water was 65ish.Any ideas?
Today I got to experience three firsts in a single day.I landed my first wild trout, on a river I'd never fished before, using a nymph for the very first time.Nothing huge, but I couldn't care less.Today was a good day.
Tried to fish with a woolly bugger but got no love. switched to the trusty nymph rig and had a pretty good day exploring new waters. Also got my PB trout on a fly.
I picked up a White river 8’ 4 weight from Bass Pro to try out fly fishing again. I’ve got a lot to learn but after an hour of practicing my casting I landed this sunfish. I panicked a bit on what to do and forgot I had a net to help land fish lol.
WANT TO GO STEELHEADING BUT THERE ARE NO STEELHEAD WHERE YOU LIVE? Think about scaling down. The same flies and techniques that we use for steelhead will catch plenty of trout. And why not? Steelhead are just big sea-run trout and they have the same common instinct as their land-locked cousins.
One of the highlights of my summer has been casting small streamers from my float tube on local lakes. These perch put up a great fight on a 5 wt rod!📍Southern Sweden
This I my current fly box 2 months into fly fishing. I also just started tying my own nymphs about 2 weeks ago! These nymphs are a combination of nymphs I’ve bought, been gifted or tied myself. It’s also only my Nymphs & dry flies, I have a whole other box full of wet flies. On the first page is my attractor, shinier nymphs.
Just about every fisherman out there is familiar with the saying, "never leave fish to find fish." I live religiously by this common sense fishing advice. It's saved my butt many days on the water guiding, and keeps me from straying away from productive water when I find myself being drawn away to fish other spots upstream that look great.
Hello all - I'm new here but have been fly fishing for few years now (still can't catch any fish though...working on that).Over the weekend my partner and I went camping and fishing for the first time since adopting our 20 lb chihuahua/cattle dog last year.
Biggest one caught on the mouse, second biggest on a White Wulff, third biggest on a streamer. All of them handled with care and wet hands and released to pass on their genetics.
I went budget supreme. 140 all in with a co fishing license.I want some tips on a beginners year.-I have practiced loading my overhead and swing cast on a pond. -I got to fish some moving water to see if i could land a few holes, and cast above -Im learning rigging and tying knots.
Im stoked to see what spey has in store for me! Im considering a float tip, but what else do i need and what size float tip do i pair with a 4wt spey rod? Anybody habe good learning resources for me to practice before im able to get a guide?I like feeling in over my head with this new fishing tec...
YOU'VE BEEN FISHING HARD ALL DAY LONG SEARCHING FOR THAT PERFECT HONEY HOLE. YOU KNOW THE ONE I'M TALKING ABOUT, IT'S THE ONE THAT HOLDS THAT TROPHY TROUT THAT KEEPS HAUNTING YOU IN YOUR DREAMS.
Hey there,I am moving from PA to CO in late July / early August, and fly fishing is my primary hobby. I know about the record low snow and subsequent melt, and I keep hearing that the fishing conditions will be horrid.
This Ford Explorer Sportsman Concept was built by Ford Motor Company for display at the 2001 North American International Auto Show. Designed around a fly fishing theme, it showcases a range of custom exterior and interior elements intended to support outdoor…
Got into fly fishing a few months back and just made my first major upgrade, got the lamson liquid combo. It’s absolutely fabulous, the line seems to be the main thing I’ve noticed. I caught 23 smallies on my second trip out with it! Absolutely loving this new hobby, unfortunately I did lose my entire fly box last week…..
Egg patterns are a staple in my fly fishing and guiding. Stocked trout are suckers for them, but even wild trout will gladly snack on them if you correctly put it in front of them most of the year. Several different egg imitations and sizes are available for fly anglers to fish with.
Stopped by local tributary for late morning top water. White popper was ignored so I tied something with more color. Multiple passes but after few tries, they could not resists. Popper hopper setup with size 8 black woolly bugger.

Some beautiful cutthroat, cut-bows, mountain white fish, and stinky pike minnows. Getting back out on the river after 8 years, and I’m absolutely loving it!
My first fly tying vise arrived last week and bought materials. I been reading Ted Leesons The Fly Tiers Benchside Referance bc I saw someone on Reddit recommend it. Took me time this morning to understand using whip finish tool and tried my best to follow Blue wing olive tie on YouTube.
Of all the master angler fish I’ve caught, the native cutthroat was always at the top of the bucket list. Finally made it happen on a custom cutthroat inspired rod.
By Daniel Galhardo DON’T RECAST YOUR FLY UNTIL IT’S HAD A CHANCE. It takes some time to learn how to read water well. But, at least when it comes to fishing mountain streams, the concept is easy to grasp: fish are looking for food and shelter, and don’t want to spend a lot of energy looking for food.
I went to a stall at a summer fair where they were doing quick fly tying tutorials and I absolutely loved it. I made this one with a lot of help, but he did say I had a knack for it (which must be 100% true of course). I would have been really keen to join that club but they are based too far away.
Maybe small compared to what others fish but in contrast to my first time fishing it felt like a huge leap. Brown, maybe 10inches or so. Caught on a friends borrowed rodResisting the urge to bankrupt myself and get my own kit
Source text: "Experimental Mayfly Emerger" - Many years ago, a fellow fly fisherman—who happened to be fishing the Wiesent River in Franconia at the same time I was—showed me his box of *Ephemera danica* imitations. He was a devotee of classic patterns—styles that catch fish just as effectively today as they did back then.
World Oceans Day is held annually on June 8th, celebrating our oceans, their habitat, and the creatures that call them home. Whether you’re fishing your local salt marsh or traveling across the world to far-off flats, healthy oceans are critical to supporting saltwater fly fishing.
I have a box of synthetic fly tying materials and some of the magnum flashabou is completely gone. All fibers have melted into a solid block, there is no combing that will restore it. The copper in the video is unusable, yet I have never even used it for tying. Remained in its package.
The Big Hole River in Montana is one of fly fishing’s most cherished rivers. That made the news of tanking trout populations in recent years a notable headline, even for those who don’t live near the river.
IT'S A COMMON MISCONCEPTION THAT "REAL PHOTOGRAPHERS" ONLY SHOOT IN MANUAL. It's not true. Certainly not for me. I grew up using manual cameras. Cameras that didn't even have light meters. In fact I've spent as much time looking at the ground glass of a view camera as through the lens of a DSLR.
First time saltwater fly fishing.I did not catch a thing but it was an experience, I did not think it was this hard throwing with waves.I really need to learn better casting.
Just bought the redington field kit euro rod last month, which is a 10' 3wt.Went out this morning with my 5 wt throwing an indicator rig and got a big nothing.Went back this afternoon and used my euro rod for the first time and got 4 fish + lost two more in 45 minutes fishing the same stretch of ...
Hello everyone, I recently got ahold of my grandfathers fly tying stuff that passed away. A lot of this material was purchased in the 90’s and early 2000’s. Most came with labels but there are a few things Im not exactly sure what they are. I have a few ideas but some confirmation would help.
Took a trip to Northern Michigan last week and got this little beauty as my first Brook Trout. This was from the Cedar River. He’s tiny but what a cool feeling. I’ve spent a ton of time in the past year learning about fly fishing and wishing I lived close enough to find them readily.
I frequently fish this small creek near my house. On one of the sections I usually find this one large trout that hangs at this particular spot (under a bush (green) in the map). Maybe he's still waiting for that one time I made a spider fall into the water trying to unsnag my fly.
Pretty much title.Disclaimer: I know these are likely well known tips but I just recently discovered them and they’ve been really great for me.I know this isn’t revolutionary, but if I want to add some extra buoyancy to a dry fly (and sometimes emerger film patterns), and it has some sort of dubb...
By Louis Cahill I SPENT A WEEK LAST YEAR AT THE PENLAND SCHOOL FOR CRAFT, TEACHING A CLASS ON BAMBOO ROD MAKING. I was having dinner in the dining hall one evening with ten or so folks I'd never met. Eating with new folks every night is a sort of tradition at Penland and it's a lot of fun.
I am actually enjoying tying more than I thought I would and have learned the hard way why dry flies tie better on a dry fly hook over a curved hook. The pink and orange fuzz balls are an attempt at an egg pattern yet they look more like a pile of fluff. I think im using too mutch material (fly yarn) and would like some advice if able.
Got to check out the Animas in Durango, CO with my brother and a local guide today. Previous experience was just nymphs under an indicator. This is my first catch on the top with a dry fly. It was a freaking awesome day.
Thank you to everyone who offered me advice! It truly did clear the fog up a bit with how intimidating the various rivers in the park are. I’m not very well versed in trout, much less freestone rivers like these so it was nice to have some information to work with. Much love to this community
I won a good collection of hooks for only 15 bucks. But the lanes flaked off and I thought the pile looked like a cool little modern art oiece. They are mostly streamer hooks in ought sizes but they're going to be great for bass patterns.
AUTUMN IS A GREAT TIME TO TARGET BIG BROWN TROUT. This time of year brown trout are in pre-spawn mode and are moving from their year-round holding water to the spawning grounds upstream. This offers anglers the chance to tie into a nice mature fish that might be too reclusive to be caught the rest of the year.
I'm stumped by a trout behavior I've been seeing for over a month on my local river (Boise, in town).Every evening around dusk (roughly 9:30 PM), trout start rising all over a long soft seam where the main river dumps into a shallow flooded bank area.
Had 2 lures break off on fish in consecutive casts so I cut all the tippet and tied the fly directly to the leader and landed this behemoth. Weighed in at 4.93 lbs and 22 inches. Caught on a 7 wt
I’m a river guy. Always have been. Mostly fish dries late spring to early fall but do plenty of nymphing and streamer fishing as well.I’ve been trying to fish lakes more but having no luck. Small ones. Definitely realizing that it’s a whole other discipline and I’d love to figure it out.
Planning a trip from CO to NJ mid July. It will be about 5-7 days depending on stops. I am from the east coast, so I know the Catskills.Curious what route I should take that would include fly fishing stops. I can go more north towards Chicago, go across PA.

By Owen Plair There are a lot of situations where fishing fast is the difference in getting an eat or the fish not seeing your fly. Either because the fish is very close to the boat, or moving at an angle where you only get one cast. When it comes to sight fishing, we've all had that surprise fish.
Been fishing this river on and off for many years. It’s taken awhile for me to find my way back. Never saw a trout rise to an insect on this stretch. They eat crawfish, sculpins, and chubs…and streamers.
I’m going to be bumming around the western us for a month or so fly fishing and camping. I generally fish western NC so I have mostly 2-4 wt click pawl setups. I just bought this battenkill disc 3 and a 9’ 6wt rod hoping this can handle any larger trout I encounter. I bought a floating line and sink tip.
First time ever! Thanks everyone for the help on my last post I was able to get a fish on a dry fly. 8 total. Most beautiful spot I’ve ever been to up in the mountains.
Day 2 of attempting to tie flies, followed a tutorial for an Adam’s dry fly, subbed some material and color based on what I have. Any thoughts/tips are greatly appreciated
Great day pursuing wild native Southern Appalachian Brook Trout. Awesome variation in appearance for all being caught within a mile or so of eachother. All caught on dries. Tough to beat and forever grateful this is in my backyard.
Lot's of days, more weight means more fish. I've hesitated to write on this topic because it seems so elementary. Sort of a fly fishing truism but I've been encouraged lately after reminding several of my friends who are highly experienced anglers of this simple fact.
May as well stand in a glacial river to cool off!Grayling action was pretty consistent, post spawn, and the crystal clear water made for some great sight fishing. Also the first time I only used flies I tied, and they all caught fish.
Sometimes as we all know, smaller is better. Size 18 especially. Ive bought some emergers and midges and the eyelid of the hook is just s**t. Cant even get a 7x through it. I never want to sound like a nasty guy in the exchange; but has this ever happened to yall? It gets annoying after awhile.
I’ve been kicking around the idea of getting into euro nymphing. Every time I’m on the river, the guys doing it seem to be putting up numbers.I enjoy fishing an indicator and honestly there’s something satisfying about watching it disappear on the take.
Relatively new to fly tying and I found this at my local thrift store for $2. It's 40 weight. Is it too thick for fly tying or am I saving a decent chunk of change getting this over dedicated fly tying thread? I'm in the Utah area so I'm not targeting massive salt water fish when fly fishing.
Welcome to a quick post about handling and tippet size! Been seeing a lot of catch photos lately, and I want to bring up two things that affect fish survival, not to call anyone out, just to share what’s worked for me.
The Single Spey is one of the most efficient, and most overlooked, casts for the two-hand fly rod. Like a lot of anglers who picked up the spey rod to target steelhead, much of my early fishing focused on Skagit techniques.
Tl;dr: what makes a small/medium/large fly a small/medium/large fly?Im fairly new to fly fishing and planning on tying my own. What im confused on is what constitues a small vs medium vs large size fly? Im used to conventional fishing still where mainly weight dictates the size of the lure in question.
Hey guys,This was first year out on the Salmon river NY fishing for steelhead.I made it out 5 times this winter and caught fish the last three. I was using the 9’ 8wt wrangler kit with the plastic reel and mainstream line.
Hey guys, still pretty new to the hobby and I have been having a hard time with actually landing fish.I have finally gotten the casting fully down and can land the flies mostly where I want to, mending is coming along as well, but I have really been struggling with setting the hook when they hit ...
Last weekend I decided to go to a stream that required a mile hike in and no stocking.I'm pretty new to fly fishing and haven't had much luck this Spring, and it was following a rain so I figured I'd cheat and use a San Juan Worm.I had a few hits, missed a couple on the fight, but ultimately didn...
Fish I pulled yesterday, obviously a rainbow but haven’t seen the lower dark circles before. Did not have any cutthroat mark under the chin, some odd hybrid or just a cool pattern?
Tons of fish before it but on 7x this thing was a nightmare. I have a YT video of it peeling me down on drag over and over lol. Deceptively strong fish. Beautiful colors though I was very happy to land it. Easy release as well. I caught it on some tiny crappy caddis looking thing I tied, that entire day thats all the fish in the run would touch.
I swear the public accesses around champlain are just getting worse every single season. tried to hit a local launch at 5:30 AM this morning hoping to target some shallow pike on the fly before the heat set in.
Completely brand new to anything fly fishing. Just tied up a few because someone gave me an old tackle box loaded with the gear for it. Will these catch a fish?
For a while now, we've been getting requests from G&G readers about writing a Czech nymphing post. It's a subject we've wanted to tackle on the blog for a while now, but neither Louis or I specialize in Czech nymphing. Furthermore, we're not the kind of guys that write about fly fishing topics that we're not experienced with.
nothing special but wanted to brag that I caught more fish than my bf today😆😆(I caught at LEAST 10 but lost count) ft. the pickerel he caught & trout nail for fun
Recent camping trip produced some great fishing. 6 hour hike over the mountains to reach the loch but well worth it.I caught loads of hard fighting trout, these are a couple of the better ones. Both caught on a sedgehog dry fly.
Second ever trout on a fly rod. Lost both my dry fly and the nymph dropper immediately after. Got soaked during the release as I lost my balance in the mud. I think I’m having fun?
Today's guest post was provided by Charlie Murphy, a long time member of Gink & Gasoline and musky devotee. For those of you who don't know Charlie, he's as laid back as they come, he eats, sleeps and breaths fishing 365 days a year, and he's always got your back when you need him.
For some reason I’m struggling with getting these things nailed. Most other patterns I go through a couple and then have it down. But these are killing me. Any pros out there with advice?Maybe a little more elk hair?
I started fly fishing late last summer, mostly for bass and panfish. I eventually got some time on trout streams and had immediate luck. Fast forward to this spring- I’m getting out on the water as much as I as possible, sometimes driving 2+ hours one way to chase trout.
My first catches on the fly and my first wild brownies today, all on a Blue Winged Olive Size 14 barbless dry fly from Caledonia. I was seeing fish rising today, and lost quite few fish as well, but these were the fish I landed.

TIPPET RINGS ARE GREAT FOR EXTENDING THE LIFE OF LEADERS Leaders have got quite expensive over the past couple decades. Recently, I saw a pack of two fluorocarbon leaders retail for $20.00 in a fly shop. That's a pretty good hit to the wallet if you get out on the water to fly fish regularly.
Took a hard fall today and snapped my net in half and punctured my Patagonia waders. My elbow, back and ankle are also feeling the fall. It was an expensive day on the river. At least I landed some fish. Maybe I can get the waders repaired by Patagonia. Ugh.
Can’t stop thinking about how fun this was. Last minute booked a fly guide after another trip got cancelled, except neither me nor my dad had ever held a fly rod before. Guide was an awesome teacher. First & largest fish of the day, 6+ lbs and took 3-4 minutes to land, I thought I was snagged until it started pulling drag.
A personal favorite of mine for just about any still waterIt's entirely UV mop chenille and some lead wraps under. A trash fly that just worksI also meant a size 8 streamer hook
Caught on a 4 inch nameless white fly I tie with a deer hair head and rabbit tail and some flash. Cool eat. We posted up to throw to rising rainbows. They were small, and at one point this fish absolutely trucked a rainbow from below like one of those sharks on the discovery channel.
I’m displeased with my current boxes and am interested in finding a box for each specific category below (1 box for each):Dries/Emergers (Comparadun, CDC, parachutes)NymphsStreamersEverything else (blobs, junk, eggs, etc)Please and thank you.
Had a solid few days, with many larger (than I usually catch) trout. Some of them on flies I tied which is always a little bonus. Mostly nymphing, though I had a few dry fly eats here and there. Could some of these larger ones be wild? I assumed the tiny ones are wild.
New to fly fishing and after trying again and again and again, I finally have caught something worth posting. Caught on a dry fly.Question: is this a wild trout? And how can I tell?
Hi everyone,I have an ongoing conspiracy theory about fly fishing I gotta get off my chestI’ve read books, articles and other writings that go into great detail about very specific dry flies to use during specific times, locations and settings (ex: size 18 green drakes)Here’s the thing…I used a d...
Hey everyone. Most streamer tutorials I see use flash, and sometimes quite a bit of it. I am considering tying and fishing some with no flash for conditions where even a minor amount may be more liable to spook fish.
By Jason Tucker More tips on finding small streams that pay off big! For the sake of space we split the subject of small-stream recon into two parts. In the previous installment we discussed using state websites, online maps, printed maps and atlases, and guidebooks to find small-stream fishing. Click here to read it if you missed it.
Just picked up some second-hand fly tying tools and materials. I know it’s not super pretty, but here’s my first attempt! I’m excited to learn more patterns. Please let me know which patterns you think I should try out that are good for beginners and don’t require too many different materials haha
Added a bunch more Caddis pupa and some more zebra midges. I am out of worm hooks so something I will get done tomorrow. I think I am all set for Sunday but lmk.
So yall once again have helped me immensely in making a decision with the renzetti traveler. Now I have a few more questions. I want to be able to tie saltwater flies around 6/0 and maybe up to like 12" deep sea trolling flies.
I’ve been wanting to catch a bull trout for years. I finally tied the flies, did the research, and went to a very special place and I landed 6 bulls in two days! By far my favorite fish to catch now. Nothing beats watching a big bull peel out from cover to smash a 12” streamer.
Caught this lovely chub (Squalius cephalus) while trying to learn the basics of casting. Since I couldn't see any rising fish, I tied on a wet fly (no idea what it is, came from my grandfather's fly box) underneath an indicator and just dead drifted it.
i posted here last week about how i caught my biggest trout on the fly. well i just outdid myself and also i think it might be a prettier fish as welledit: spelling
I’ve gone out a couple of times here in Colorado with no luck so far. This is after a break from fishing for about 10 years. I’m going to be camping near the Arkansas river tomorrow and stopping by a fly shop or two.
Here’s a hot take that some people will get upset over…-If you’re clipping your tippet, make sure your tiny piece of plastic doesn’t just fall into the ground or water, make it fall into your pack and toss it in the trash when you’re home. I’ve seen tons of videos of people just snipping the tippet and not disposing it.

Here are my nymph and dry boxes. I have not left the vice for 5 days straight. Am I lacking any where? I leave on Sunday and I am like panic tying even though I am probably sufficient. Let me know.
Tail is a 3/0 hook with flashabou for a tail material, white bucktail, and a chartreuse synthetic fiber (not sure what it actually is it was just labeled as "synthetic streamer fiber"). Front hook is a 6/0 with white bucktail for support, grey synthetic fiber, and chartreuse craft fur for a head material.
I build watches, as a hobby (don’t have business or anything) and have supplier making this custom dial. I thought it was badass and was only gonna get one for myself.

Should have seen the ones I tied up before this 😂 diabolical… but after a few weeks of learning in my spare time this was the best version of a Frenchie I could muster, and the first ever fish today on one I tied myself.Awesome feeling even if it’s a tiddler, thanks lil dude.Size 14 FM5045 jig ho...
I’m a full-time SW guide in Virginia, and my family is going on a vacation this summer to Highland, NY. I want to book a guide for a day while I’m there, but it seems like outfitters are all 1-1/2 hours northwest or 1-1/2 hours east.
There is something magical & romantic about fly fishing in the smokies in May.The water levels got up into perfect range the day before we arrived and conditions turned perfect.Had an awesome time with our family & caught too many fish to count. I’ll be back next year, thank you smokies!!
Wild brown trout caught in the West of Ireland, caught at dusk on an intermediate line with a natural daddy long legs wet fly. Been fly fishing for 3 years and this is my pb. Safely returned to the water after a quick picture
Sub-title- It’s Time to Give Carp Their Due Some time back—I believe 15-20 years ago—anglers in Traverse City, Michigan, began calling carp “Golden Bones,” and things haven’t been the same since. Traverse City is a big city/small town set at the end of the twin arms of Grand Traverse Bay.
Hello all, I am just genuinely curious. Why does it seem that so many people worry or debate wild caught or stocked?Let me preface with this:Every time I see it mentioned it’s always regarding trout.
I’m not a fisherman but I have taken some pictures of fly fishing in the past. Enjoy.Edit: I have more and plan on taking some this summer with my brothers so if there’s interest let me know.
There's definitely some strategy involved in tarpon fishing. Migrating tarpon offer the fly angler a great opportunity for a close in counter with the silver king, but you have to play your cards right.
I've only ever done fly fishing prior to this year. Trying to learn how to catch trout on conventional gear to get my son into it (fly casting is hard). I catch trout all day on flies. Cannot seem to catch any using panther martins, rooster tails etc.
Couple nice coastal cutthroat for the opener. The airborne fish is a screenshot from video I got of it eating a mayfly before it even touches the water. Super cool. Only got 4 or 5 good fish to net, and quick released that many more. All in all, not a ton of fish but had a great time.
Fish is on the ground because he was gill hooked. I very, very rarely eat bass but it was the right thing to do to fillet this one. He just wasn’t going to make it.Got some help fromu/Intelligent_Goose254 and found out I had a few streamers. I have a box of flies and didn’t know what they were lol.

IT'S CRAZY TO ME BUT I SEE IT ALL THE TIME. GUYS WILL SPEND A FORTUNE TRAVELING TO SOME FAR FLUNG FISHING DESTINATION AND WHEN THEY GET OUT ON THE BOAT THEY'LL TIE ON THE FLY THE GUY IN THE SHOP AT HOME RECOMMENDED INSTEAD OF ASKING THEIR LOCAL GUIDE. Guides behave differently in different locations.
Looking at getting into fly tying as a hobby. I know that a good vise is necessary but what else would you consider "essential" right from the start. I intend to tie flys like mayfly, wooly bear caterpillars, maybe some coastal shrimp flys, or crayfish for catfish. Looking for something a little less space consuming vs woodworking.
5x down to 6x, size 10 golden chubby with a size 18 pheasant tail flashback off the bend. Missed him on the chubby but got him to commit to the nymph the second time around!
Been fly fishing for about a year now. My wife and I each have cheap 5 weight trout rods (<$150 combos each) we are very happy with, and a super cheap 3wt I take backpacking. My wife has started getting interested in fishing bigger streamers to target bigger fish.
Went with all white for my chromatic peanut streamer; it’s the first fly I’ve done start to finish other than one other zebra midge… wondering what I can improve on, so any feedback is appreciated! I didn’t have wire to connect the hooks through the beads, so I used 20lb mono wrapped and superglu...
Fishing was a bit slow all day, so I tied on a rubber leg fly to play around with the abundance of rock bass in this river. Turns out the smallies really wanted it as well. 18.25" followed up by a 19.75" a few minutes later. Super clear water, so I got to see both of the takes as well.
First time fly fishing, so I bit the bullet and got a guide. Ended up landing 11 fish over two days of fishing. Spotted many more, and lost a few. I had possibly the most fun in my life sight fishing in the crystal clear waters of NZ.
Fished the canyon section of a well known Montana river yesterday, nothing huge but the fish were so strong for the size. This brown had a huge tail fin for its size imo. Also never seen rainbows jump like that!Got crowded by midday, but arriving at 630am beat the crowd.
So I'd like to catch a crucian carp in my local still water and I think regular dark Pheasant Tail doesn't do the trick for it but I saw people catch them using rainbow beads and small softplastics so I thought a rainbow warrior nymph might do the trick.Hook: #18Bead: 3mm silverTail: Coq de leonB...
By Bob Reece For many fly fishers there is nothing more enchanting that watching trout sip emerging insects from the water’s surface. This allure can often lead to frustration without the proper pattern and presentation. While the fly fisher is responsible for presentation, Reece’s Surface Assassin is the appropriate pattern.
I live in SEPA, where there are no natural trout but a ton of small creeks, so i've recently taken up fly fishing with a real short tennessee handle rod (until my 2wt comes in which i'm very very excited for) just cause precision casting is a little more tricky but a ton more rewarding.
By Rod Hamilton "I HAVE SEEN MORE THAN ONE FFF CERTIFIED CASTING INSTRUCTOR BROUGHT TO TEARS AFTER HIS TENTH BLOWN SHOT AT UNDER FORTY FEET" Whether you are wading in eighteen inches of water, weaving through the mangroves or doing the Flamingo Slide over a mucky flat, there is no such thing as a seventy-foot cast.
The season opener in Oregon let me get back to the type of fly fishing I love best, climbing mossy boulders with a light rod in the coast range looking for aggressive trout. Didn't see anyone for hours and caught enough fish to lose count. For the most part, these cutthroats wanted nothing to do with anything but dry caddis patterns.
Pairing it with my Mojo bass and throwing your typical small and large streamers/ poppers/ bugs. Is there anything decent around $100? Id like to keep it less than $150. My current reel is heavy and it’s very easy for line to slip through the seems soo looking for the opposite of those things lol.
Did a DIY mission in Puerto Rico, managed to get this guy after about a day of watching them off the beaches.Already dialed in to get another one, this time at home in Florida...
I don’t have many materials at the moment to tie up different nymphs. The first is a random nymph I tied up using Dyed Black Cock Hackle, Crystal Flash & Peacock hurl. The second is the same kind of thing but instead of using Black Cock hackle I used a pheasant tail & no peacock hurl.
A super simple pattern. Size 20 dry fly, 1mm foam, and the most frustrating part a hackle stack. But seriously this fly fishes well and is an easy one to keep floating.Photo credit to Chase Martin of Flops Fly Fishing.
Your best shot at capturing a good photograph of you and your catch, is first having someone along with you that's competent with a camera in their hands. But even a world class photographer will tell you, it's extremely difficult getting those picture perfect photographs, if the person handling the fish has no clue what their doing.
No videos allowed here, but here are some screengrabs of a mayfly(?) emerging. This was one of those moments when you decide to take a break from fishing, slow down, and just look around. Great day on the US’s most famous trout stream.
I want to catch one of these big Florida grass carp on the fly so I bought some dog biscuit flies, but I wasn’t feeling good about trying to land a 15-40lb grass carp on those tiny ahh hooks. So I tried to tie one up on a sz 6 mustad tarpon streamer hook. I think it turned out alright. Just trimmed it up with my regular straight tying scissors.
My (AMAZINGLY THOUGHTFUL) wife got me a guided float trip on the green river for Christmas for I got to cash that in about a week ago. Started out with a double nymph rig (size 20 and 24 scuds) and landed close to probably 10. A mix of bows and browns.
By Justin Pickett I have never met anyone who could pick up a five-weight fly rod and make consistent, accurate fifty-foot casts without ever having prior experience with fly casting. I used to play a ton of golf. So much so that at one point, much earlier in my youth, I could hold my own on any given course and typically shoot Par.
Thought he was a cutthroat for a second, but remembered there aren't any in this watershed.Do we think stocked or wild? I'm about 80% this is a wild fish due to the coloration, state of fins, white tipped ventral/anal fins.
First time I caught anything with a dry fly. Definitely an awesome way to fish because they come up and eat it which looks awesome. Not sure what the name of that fly is so if someone knows please let me know.
Hey.I am in the market for a camera setup to make fly tying videos. I don’t want to spend massively - as one can do with cameras - so shoot through recommendations for $1000 USD. I would need convincing to push the budget to $2000 if necessary.
Tl;dr: finally learning how to fly fish after conventional fishing for yearsBought this 4 wt set up last year for future camping amd back packing trips after seeing it on sale. I had nothing but issues on the first trip out and didn't catch anything but tangles and tress/bushes so I put down for the rest of the season.
Rode my Honda shadow (320 miles round) to kernville ca and spent two days wondering eventually at night in the edge of town I got my first two trout out of a real river ever …. They were babies tho used a black nymph
Through the years in conventional fishing the lures just kept getting more expensive. My first week of fly fishing I noticed immediately one fly costs an average $2.80 compared to $8-$12 for just one name brand lure.I picked these up from my local Walmart for $12 Total.
By Dan Frasier For all you flats guys and bank fishermen out there. Landing, unhooking, wrangling, getting a picture, and releasing a fish can all turn into a giant goat rodeo. Nothing makes it worse than having a bare hook connected to a nearly invisible line which is tied to your very expensive rod; flailing about.
I am pretty new to fly tying. I think I have tied a total of 6 flies before these two. I know they are not the prettiest but do you think they will still catch fish? Criticism is welcome as long as its constructive! Trying to improve so I welcome any tips you have. If I am doing things right, tell me that as well.
I’m thinking of getting a 10’ 6wt rod with a sink tip line but not sure. I already have a 9’ 5wt with floating line and a 9’ 7wt with sinking line. Just wanted to see what yalls thoughts are.
In fly tying, a fly that falls apart after only a few uses is not a good fly at all.Materials such as ribbing, hackle stems, and tinsel should always be folded back and securely tied down.If the fly is not lost, this method allows it to remain durable and fishable for many years.
Was out fly fishing and couldn’t get my flies out far enough with a 9’ 5wt will I need a bigger heavier rod since my rivers are bigger? Also these pools were at least 10-15 foot deep and I can’t imagine how I would be able to cast effectively with that amount of leader on.
Finally caught a nice bass on the North Fork flats. I’ve been skunked before and this weekend I had plenty of good shots, just could not lay down a quality cast and entice a bite. Finicky mofos! Then late on Sunday one came in at 12 o’clock, I landed my fly five feet from his nose, stripped a few time and got the bite.
Had one of the best days fishing today. The river i fish have native brook trout but I don’t think they get this big. Are these native or stocked and how can you tell?
Repost because apparently I have no idea how to use Reddit.Something I came up with while fishing deep murky fast pocket water in Northern New Mexico.Starting fly tying seriously a week ago ! Let me know what you guys think !
I received an email from a reader the other day asking advice on steelhead nets. I thought it was a topic worth some discussion. We put a lot of thought into rods, reels, lines and flies but often the piece of equipment that seals the deal is an afterthought.
Got a bunch of wild brookies and some rainbows, as well as a decent whitefish today while fishing an unstocked stream in Idaho. Always rewarding catching wild fish, even if they’re just lil tuggers. Great way to pass time while waiting for the flows on the main rivers to relax
It's wet cuz I was checking what it would look like in the water, but it was made with white marabou-like feathers, some orange feather, part of a strip of rabbit fur, and some flash. It is on a size 12 streamer hook.
Like the title says what a difference (to me) in casting bass flys on a 6wt vs a 5wt. I’d loaded up 6wt line but had been using a 5wt rod. I was making do but wanted to at least see if there was a difference so I ordered a new rod to try. HUGE difference!!
Really hot day in southeastern PA, flows were down, sun was out. Trout were seeing and refusing everything. But came away with a nice little smallmouth for my efforts.
Hey [r/flytying](r/flytying), I’ve been working for months on an app called Fly Tyer’s Bench (in iOS and Android store). I built it out of personal passion because I wanted a better way to track what’s actually on my bench and figure out what I can tie with it.
IT'S HARD TO OVERSTATE THE IMPORTANCE OF CONFIDENCE IN FLY FISHING. IT'S OFTEN THE SPECIAL SAUCE ON SUCCESS. I squint into the sun. My eyes burn from sweat and sun screen. I take a few deep breaths and puff them back out. I stretch my neck side to side, it pops and cracks.
I posted a 24" brown last week. Monster on the 3wt. Last night, I fished at dusk for some dry fly action. Although, they're much smaller, easily as satisfying. When I got to the river, there was a few bugs but nothing major. Saw some bigger sulfurs and some smaller Hendricksons.
I was up on the maitland river, fishing some falls to try and get my first steelhead on the fly, got skunked on those, but holy crap, I have never seen so many small mouth in my life.
I’m pretty sure I overdubbed it but here’s my first real fly. I think it was based on some sort of pheasant tail nymph. I had to sub some materials and made some mistakes. It won’t ever see the water but I’ll keep it forever :)
All Pollock from different saltwater fjords from our road trip. Caught fish at all locations, started small but finally got into some bigger ones as the trip went on. 8wt echo blue boost with 8wt Rio fathom line full sink 7ips. 9ft tapered 20lb fluoro leader with 16lb tippet.

Per guide rec, no flash, bland, bigger than Gotcha or Crazy Charlie. Seems more similar to red fish flies than what I tie for the Caribbean. Almost like a Kwan.
Have any of you had the experience of fishing and getting to know an area like the back of your hand, and then the fish you had not expected or dreamed of being there popped up out of nowhere? Or maybe a place really close to you, or in the back of your yard that a fish you never expected would c...
Had a day yesterday. On a small stream we came upon a school of 20 inch rainbows. We all took turns catching and releasing these fish. Not aloof like the San Juan trout. Later in the day we hiked downstream and they were spread out. I caught one sight fishing in ankle deep water.
I’m looking to start tying my own flies & am looking for a beginner setup to do so. I found that. Kit for £50 nearby but not sure if it’s any good? Thanks
Hi there, my 16 year old daughter and I are new to fly fishing over the past several years… we will be headed south on 395 from Oregon to visit our family ranch near Lone Pine and the golden trout wilderness. My daughter would love to do some fly fishing in meadows, around big boulders, smaller creeks and pocket waters.
MODERN WATERPROOF ZIPPERS HAVE REVOLUTIONIZED THE DESIGN OF WADERS. The ease and convenience of zip-front waders is easy to get used to. There was a time when I scoffed at the idea, but now I can't see fishing in anything else. Especially with the durability and dependability found in the new waterproof zippers.
I’ve spent the last 10 years spin fishing for bass, walleye and pike in Minnesota. I’ve gotten hooked and experienced all the highs and lows fishing has to offer. Always admired and appreciated fly fishing because of the technique, approach and culture that is associated with it but never had anyone around me that was into it.
Howdy folks! Picture for traffic.A couple days ago I was prescribed a big dose of radiation, I'm now too radioactive to spend time around others. I'm stuck in a room for the next week with nothing but some books, my fly tying gear, and work.I'm hoping folks will give me some ideas of their favorite fly patterns to start expanding my repertoire.
*Pic for attention*Hey everybody! I started fly fishing two years ago. My first rod was a 5wt that I loved, but wanted something a little more delicate for smaller streams in Colorado. I then bought a 4wt. At the time I didn’t realize how close these two were to one another.
I almost got caught with my pants down fishing a spring creek the other day. Without even giving it a second thought, I had left the cabin without one of my dry fly boxes, that's loaded with all my favorite Sulphur and Light Cahill patterns.
By Owen Plair What makes the winter fishing for redfish so special? There are not many fisheries that have a winter time season, due to migratory fish, cold temps, snow, and ice. One of the many great things about the Lowcountry is that it is a year round fishery for Redfish.
First time fly fishing, hoping to go for small mouth bass tomorrow. Pulled my fly rod out of the closet after some years and I’m not sure what I’ve got here.
Looking for a 3wt rod. I have a butter stick in 7'0 3wt, but am having a bad time when I fish indicators on it. I typically use xs oros if I'm going that route.I like my girlfriends 3wt Clearwater the little I've used it for indicators. I was wanting something similar to that. The tfo and classic trout are a little cheaper.
In this week’s “How to Tie” feature, Tim Flagler with Tightlinevideo ties a classic streamer that will catch fish anywhere in the world, the Mickey Finn. Learn How to Tie This Fly: Difficulty: Easy In the last several years, fly tying has seen incredible innovations.
After finding a tick last month on my waders on the metolius and then last week waking up with a tick attached to my fucking stomach on a fishing trip in Montana I bought a bottle of permethrin because I still shiver thinking about that morning.
Did a little hike out in the mountains for some lake fishing and caught my first grayling and about 12 more after that. Overall a spectacular day of fishing and good views
Probably a dumb question, but if you've been practicing casting on the lawn, do you need to clean your fly line in the same way that you do after every few sessions on the water? If yes, what's the best way to do that?
There’s no trout within a hour of my college, After failing to not spook every carp in local ponds for almost a month, went to the river and found some willing to play ball
I live in Ireland and often see black fly on the water. So I have attempted to tie a black fly, no specific pattern just what I see on the waters here. Today I tied my first dry fly, my 5th fly in total. What you guys think? Any constructive criticism? I know the wings aren't great, I didn't use enough feathers.
By Jesse Lowry Fishing is as much of a mental game as any sport. Whether it's having confidence in your gear, the conditions, your technique, hell, even in the fish, the psychological factors play a role in how we perform on the water.
I’m a big wet wader, I hate wearing waders and avoid it whenever possible, and I don’t really understand the design of most wet wading shoes. I have always worn my keens/crocs while wet wading as they allow my feet to breathe and are easy to clean mud and silt off of.
While bulky and awkward looking, these streamers have crazy movement from the pacchiari’s dragon tails and bucktail. Swimming like the big soft plastic “bulldawgs” used by conventional musky anglers.

I am new to fly fishing, what are some flies I could be adding to have a more well rounded set up. I fish around the Maryland area. All recommendations are appreciated!
In Hokkaido, Japan, the snowmelt season will be ending soon, and the serious fishing season is about to begin. Please come and enjoy fishing in Hokkaido.
Have been fly fishing since the age of 16.I've hit a ceiling in my skill level. A large part of that is by buying flies.I rely on "what's worked before" or what the local guide says or what looks good vs understanding the insects, the hatches, the streams in detail.Just put my Fullingmill fly box with 300 flies on ebay.
For nearly two decades, a fly fishing show out of Argentina has been building something most of the mainstream hasn’t fully seen, largely because it’s existed outside the channels that define modern fly fishing media.
Maine’s supreme court has agreed to hear challenges against the state’s fly fishing only regulations, which were the subject of a recent lawsuit. Plaintiffs who want the fly fishing only regulations overturned succeeded in appealing a lower court ruling that sided with keeping the state’s current regulations in place.
By Marcus Saunders That gentle morning light seems to push back all those fears that hound our minds at 3am. Glancing sideways out of the ute window, I see vague outlines race by as the human world slowly comes into focus; the radio is silent, and only the occasional rattle of the trailer reminds me that the boat is in tow.
Finally got the old canoe I found sitting in my father-in-law’s woods set up pretty much perfect for my fly fishing needs. I can stand and walk around in it with no problem, and the trolling motor with the lithium battery absolutely rips.
I’m sure this has been talked about already so I’m sorry to beat a dead horse. What did you all do to stop yourself from feeling overwhelmed? I’ve only ever went fishing for catfish. Just cast out and leave it sit. So I’ve never been the best fisherman to begin with.
Hey there,So the ones that know me, know that i travel quite a bit for fly fishing. And on my road trips, i've quite often not had a washing machine or even a sink at hand, when transferring between water ways.

By Louis Cahill About once a year I get an email from the editor of a fishing magazine saying, “I heard you have photos of golden trout.” The answer is yes, but better than half the time the question is completely wrong.
So im fairly new to fly fishing with only one rod. I know the best answer to my question is have 2 rod setup but i want to get more better at fly fishing before buying more gear. So question is, say if im throwing streamers with 2x taper leader and i want to throw size 14-18 nymphs or dry flies.
I had my first day river fishing recently using nymphs and I loved it. The only thing I didn't love was the weeds and losing my nymphs on a 7x tippet. I'd love to fish some wooly buggers now but the last time I did it I lost it on the first cast so now I'm thinking I should try using weed guards.
Just dropping in here to say anyone starting out with tying flies, you can make a DIY whip finishing tool with a wire coat hanger and needle nose pliers. Yes, they’re only like five bucks, but you can use that $5 for some fly tying material instead. Thought I’d pass along the info!Tight lines!
I got these my third day of fly fishing. I walked around the water and looked under rocks and saw mostly black fly's and some insects so I used a little black dry fly. They loved it and it was like a feeding frenzy for these guys. Just had it on the end of my leader.
Lionfish may be the mother of all invasive species. Take a moment to think about this: a lionfish (native to the Indo-Pacific) has no natural predators in the Atlantic ocean. It can live up to fifteen years, reaching sexual maturity in less than a year. Once mature, a pair can spawn as often as every four days.
2.5lb tippet I thought was going to snap at any given point on 3wt rod bent like a candy cane. Unbelievably difficult to net and a long ass fight but she fully recovered for the release.Unreal day
Went to visit family and threw the 4wt in the car because why not? Was hoping to find some brown trout from shore given the info I’d read on the water. Had about 12 perch and no luck on a single trout in 5+ hrs. Sadly I had forgotten the streamer box at home but had one (very poorly) home tied black bugger leftover in the bottom of my gear bag.
Measured at about 21 inches. This fish ate a size 18 BWO. My very first dry fly brown trout. It was amazing. At first I didn’t know what flies he was eating and I threw an Adam’s. But he didn’t even eat that.
Went to the West Branch of the Delaware for a float yesterday with a long-time friend who’d always wanted to try the sport. On her first day of fly fishing. With her very first cast of a dry fly. With a four weight. With 6x tippet. She hooks, fights, and lands the wild brown pictured.
MY GOOD FRIEND DAN FLYNN GREW UP IN MAINE CHASING THE GIANT BROOK TROUT IN THE RANGELEY LAKES REGION. These days you can find him high in the headwaters of the Southern Appalachians after the local brookies or tied into a big wild brown downstream. The geography may have changed but there is still a lot of Maine in his tying.
Only problem is I don’t know how to fly fish… he did give me a fly rod though so I’m excited to give it a try. I love trout fishing so anything that gives me an excuse to put on my waders is good enough for me. Cheers.
Hey everyone,Been debating getting into tying. Doing a lot of trout fishing recently and with it comes a lot of donations to the trees. But I do a ton of saltwater fly fishing as well. So I think the next evolution I fear will be getting into tying to learn more about rivers and when to throw what, especially for trout.
I’m not usually one for chasing stockers BUT this one hole near my job has looked juicy I’ve posted about it in the past and I finally went back and got what I was looking for.
Been fly fishing for a few years. Been a lifelong fisherman, so I'm not super green but fly fishing is different. Went out yesterday, brought my new 3wt because I really wanted to fish some dries. It's a bit early where I am and the weather was cold (snow in the morning). So I fished without luck for hours.
By Louis Cahill Concentration, Relaxation and Communication. I wish I could claim those words. I'm quoting Jose Sands, bonefish guide at Andros South Bonefish Lodge. That was his answer when I asked what he thought was the key to successful bonefishing. As usual, he nailed it. Plenty of anglers are frustrated or intimidated by bonefish.

Patapsco River, MD. Got three hits earlier in the evening yesterday, but couldn't set the hook. Third time I got a hit I was able to land it - nice little rainbow trout on a streamer. What a great feeling!
By Herman deGala It’s the time of year when the rivers and creeks around Colorado are blown out because of run-off but the weather is just gorgeous. What is a body to do? Of course, you could head to some tailwater. Until you get there and find everyone thought the same thing. Or you could head to your nearby lake or pond. It’s all filled up.
The bugs were slow to hatch this morning, didn’t really pick up until noon or so. Although this was the only fish of the day, I’m still happy to have made the trek. Only 3 more weeks until the rest of ‘em open up.
This was my fourth guided trip. My first three landed me a total of…3 fish, lol! This time, good conditions allowed me to land 10 fish including this 26” wild, brown trout. I ended up catching this guy twice. First time, he snapped the line and took my fly.
A close family friend and mentor of mine in his late 70’s introduced me to fly fishing last summer. He guided all around Montana when he was my age and he said his wife panted rods for Winston when they were living in Twin Bridges.
Hello All. I am extremely new to fly tying and fly fishing. I live 4 hours from the nearest trout fishing so most of my efforts will be on bass fishing. Thought to post some of first attempts at gurgler and stealth bomber flies to see if anyone might be able to provide some feedback? I’ve struggled some figuring out the proportions of the flies.
I’m looking for recommendations on materials and equipment to get into fly tying. I’m looking to mostly be tying dries, nymphs and terrestrials for SE US trout.
I love the colors on these fish. Mostly caught on double nymph rigs, but a few hit some medium size streamers (drifting them). I assume most of them are stocked but don’t know for sure.Location: New Hampshire
I have been getting into fly tying recently. I have a bunch of ruffed grouse tail feathers. I want to know if I can/should replace a Coc de leon, or pheasant tail feathers with the grouse I have.
I caught this Brook Trout down in Lincoln National Forest, NM. It made me think, where is the southern most brook trout fishery in the US? Can anyone beat the vicinity of Ruidoso NM?EDIT: With further research sparked by some comments, Ruidoso NM is approximately 33N Latitude.
By Bob Reece When connecting a person and a fish is the foundation of your job, the fly that you use matters. The pattern design as well as the hook that it’s founded upon must both deliver.
Spent a decent bit out on this river today and caught absolutely zero fish. Initially started by throwing inline spinners upstream, but it was impossible to get the lure to spin at all due to the current and it wasn’t until it got downstream where it had any action.
For a 7wt rod what is your favorite streamer line that holds up. I had a buddy that just bought the SA 250 grain streamer pro and it ripped first time fishing it. Want something reliable that sinks fast so in the shallow stuff I can just retrieve faster and it’ll get down in the deep stuff.

Wanted to put out a little PSA for anyone on the fence about getting into fly tying.Short answer: just do it.I started tying about 7 months ago because I thought it would save me money. LOL.
Went to Southern Sequoia for some CA golden trout and hit the South Fork of the Kern.I have another camping trip planned in June, I'm wanting to find somewhere that has Brookies in California with some decent camping nearby preferably within hiking distance of the campsite.Feel free to PM me a st...
Had a slam on my local river with streamers yesterday. Never moved so many fish in this river like I did yesterday. My 6wt setup with large arbor reel and full sink line was originally for Stillwater but it’s become a killer for me in my go to river.
By Justin Pickett Oh, the world of fast fly rods…. They can be great tools. Some of my favorite rods are most definitely faster than your “average joe” rod.

A Note from Alexander Gomez (@silverkinggomez): “That day we were fishing for resident tarpon. We happened to hit the mother load on a super calm day. Literally the perfect tarpon day multiple eats and landed a couple. I’m a third generation flyfishing guide.
The countdown to Adult Swim's Rick and Morty Season 9 is now down to less than three weeks, which means it's time to check out the season's new opening sequence. As we all know, sometimes it's a preview of what's to come – and sometimes, it's filled with some…
By Justin Pickett A pair of hemostats can save a fly fisherman serious time on the water! If I were asked what one tool, or accessory, I absolutely have to have with me on the water, I would have to say it is, without a doubt, my trusty pair of hemostats. Not my sunglasses, nippers, or my net, but hemostats.
For the stream it was on, it couldn’t have been very much bigger. It jumped and made runs and took me to my reel for the first time for a trout on the fly. I was so used to stripping line to bring in fish it took me a second to realize I needed the reel.
We've gotten some decent rain the past couple weeks, so I broke out the fly rods and hopped around a couple crossings targeting bass and sunfish. It was a cold start in the mid 40's , but still was able to wet wade as the river water was warm enough. Caught a couple nice post spawn bass and various sunfish on a fly I tied up.
I started building my own fly rods, which had been fun, and finally started fishing them. Made a Euro Nymph rod, and a switch rod for fishing the surf.
A few headlines this past week grabbed my attention, and not in the best way. The first was someone’s response to the new TV show “The Madison,” another entry from Taylor Sheridan (creator of “Yellowstone”).
Took my euro nymph rod and reel out and caught over 20 rainbows and a brown. As I was leaving got this nicer rainbow. Definitely one of my better fishing days!

My first memory of bringing a trout to hand with a fly rod took place back in the spring of 1990, on a seasonal trout stream, located 45 minutes north of Atlanta, GA. It was a far cry from a trophy trout at 10-inches, but that freshly stocked rainbow trout, touched my eleven year old fishing soul to the core.
Novice fly fisherman here, after almost a year of researching equipment, lines, flies, waders, vests, etc…I took a trip to North Ga for a few days to try for trout. I booked a trip with Cohutta Fishing Co and they didn’t disappoint!!The day of our trip we were rained out but rebooked for two days later.
A lot of people in this group liked and found inspiration for their own projects when I posted about a photo box I made, so I was hoping some of you might appreciate the poster frame I built over the weekend. This is a life-size poster of a 28.5” brown trout I had the great privilege of bringing to hand last fall.
We stayed at a lodge outside of Hancock NY last weekend, and my daughter, 15yr got her first Rainbow. And was her first catch on a fly rod. Did a good netting and release. #16 Hendricks. Super proud of her.
Meadow Run, Ohiopyle, PA; Size 20 black zebra midge. This is a stocked stream so it’s a hatchery fish, but I’ve caught plenty of wild browns and none of them were nearly this colorful.
Today I caught my first trout on my fly rod! After grinding multiple spots out near me that are stocked with trout, I finally landed this little guy! Thanks to everyone that responded to my previous post on me being super discouraged that I couldn’t even get bites from trout. Caught this stocked guy at a pond with a green wooly bugger.
I've been eying up Gary Loomis's NFC blanks for a while. I just came across this article about NFC/Edge rods resisting PE take over and darn it that's reason enough to support the company alone besides their rods/blanks being top of the line and made in USA.A $100 "Golden Ticket" helps NFC grow and gets you one of any blank in their line-up.
Size 4 mouse heading with a full box to a good client of mine. His box includes a bunch of size 4 Mini Jimmy’s, a deer head streamer, and what i am naming the Brunch Money (articulated lunch money built slightly different).Funny enough, the hardest part about this fly was putting the little ears o...
This article, like many I’ve written, began with a conversation I had with my brother, Tom. Tom and I are brothers separated by a mutual hobby. We both love to fish but in very different ways. Tom gets after bass on gear. A skill I respect but don’t especially prefer. I suck with a gear rod and it’s just not the experience I enjoy.
Picked this up yesterday. Gonna use it for summer steelhead with my Scandi setup. I’ll keep my R8 8130 for winter fish and a Skagit head. When my Burkie arrives, I’ll turn this into a loaner rod for buddies that want to go and try out swinging for steelhead.
Pattern by Lucian Vaseis (At least I found the pattern on his blog.)Tied on a Daiichi D1770 size 14. Sumo Power Thread A1 tying thread. Pheasant tail fibres for tail, Mayfly Yellow Synthetic Nymph Skin Small for abdomen, Hends Rabbit Fur K03 for thorax, yellow CDC wing, and Teal Summer Duck hackle.
I was talking with a friend the other day about doing some fishing in Colorado, his home state. This is a good topic to bring up if you are trying to lure me into an extended conversation. Colorado is near to my heart. He was throwing out places we might fish and said "I know you love the Dream Stream, but I hate that place".
Went out chasing the tiger of the river, the legendary Golden Mahseer… But the river had other plans.Ended up landing a Gardi (Labeo dero) on the fly - not what I came for, but honestly, one of the toughest, most rewarding catches I’ve had.Sometimes it’s not about the target, it’s about the surpr...
Can’t find any info on the sink rate for the Fast version but thought these look ideal for my streamer fishing on the river for trout, and even useful for swinging wet flies. Also the built in welded swivel looks pretty handy for easy tippet changes and avoiding line twist.Have a 5wt and 7wt rod, ...
Bought my first fly rod a few weeks ago. This afternoon was the most active fishing day I've ever experienced. It was take after take, I had to release a bunch but kept my limit for supper. Haven't caught anything until today and iv been out alot trying to get my casts down.
caught my pb cutthroat on a beautiful spring day. boy do i love montana! i can bike less than a few miles from my house to access multiple amazing fishing spots.
I first came across this stonefly nymph online, but never managed to find it again. Anyone have any knowledge about this pattern?Anyhow, tied on a Daiichi 1730 #8. Black goose biots for tail, antennae, and legs.
Back in 2013 Kent Klewein and I were in a tire commercial. I was encouraged by a reader to reshare this video from 5 years ago. It seems like yesterday but our readership has grown so much since then that plenty of you have not seen it. If you have, please excuse the old news. If you haven’t, take a few minutes and enjoy some cool fishing footage.
Title. I was fishing a logjam the other day at my local creek and a larger fish for the size of stream I was in (probably a good 14 inches) was routinely torpedoing itself straight out of the water. I've seen smaller fish do it during a hatch, but there weren't really any bugs around and I thought that the larger fish were more wary when rising.
Found this old bamboo rod in my late father-in-law's things, still in the box, still wrapped in the original paper. All my rods are graphite or fiberglass, never used bamboo. It's got 3 different tips, and the handle is reversible, so it can be used for a fly reel or spin reel I think. Any help on what I'm looking at would be much appreciated.
My buddy and I are getting into fly fishing. We have been doing ok with our skills in stocked waters and having a blast. We would like to try getting after some wild trout (class A or wild designation) near central PA. To add to the fun, we want to pitch and tent and take in the wilderness.
what is this fly and how would you tie it? the booty is craft fur. is it a dragonfly nymph? mostly i want to know how to do the hollow craft fur with flashhttps://preview.redd.it/qwck1ksghdyg1.png?width=984&format=png&auto=webp&s=0fc1f926b27b47d36f3d346eee7ba806dcc3ed5c
Just finished tying this brown rabbit fur streamer. The natural fur has incredible movement on slow retrieves — perfect for bass and pike. Can’t wait to test it out this weekend! 🎣
Booked a day of fishing in Scotland while on vacation to the River tweed, a river known for housing large brown trout, grayling and salmon. I’m primarily a salt water angler so the realm of trout fishing is pretty foreign to me, but I ended up hooking into this fish on a 2wt sage ESN and he screamed down river probably 40 yards.
THE STASH IS BACK! Rob "The Stash" Smith is back to share one of his favorite redfish flies with us. The Rusty Enema is a proven producer anywhere redfish are found. It's a great attractor pattern that pushes a lot of water, which is like ringing the dinner bell for redfish in dirty water.
Hello all,I’m embarking on a trip to B.C. to fish for bull trout this summer around mid June. I’ll be in the Fernie area. To give some context, I’ve already gone on 3 dedicated bull trout trips that were a week long each and have not landed my first bull yet. I’m trying to find a safe bet.
The bite at a spot near me seems to light up at dusk, but I have such a hard time with visibility that I can’t really fish it. Seems like the fish are tearing up emergers but I’m basically blind casting - even with the dry dropper it’s hard to keep track once I cast. Any tips for low light fishing?
Fly only rivers and lakes nearby, and just a ton of trouty waters in every direction. Most of these fish were caught about 10 minutes from my house. There’s cutthroat, bulls, brooks, lakers, browns, whitefish, and some salmon/steelhead opportunities all within 45 minutes.
In this week’s “How to Tie” feature, Cheech with Fly Fish Food ties a dry fly that should be in every trout angler’s summer box, the Flavilinea Sparkle Dun.
I’m thinking about taking my dad to NZ around Feb-Mar. We have been talking about doing this for over 20 years, but life always got in the way. He’s 70 now and this is probably our last chance to make it happen. He’s in decent shape for his age, but he has low injury risk tolerance (wading deep, climbing down embankments, etc).
I bought my first fly rod today and was able to land this little guy! I had so much fun. Just thought I would share hahaEdit: Thanks for all the support guys very friendly community you’ve got here
So when I tie a flashback nymph on a jig hook, I flip the fly over and tie in the flash so it rides up along with the jig hook. But does it really matter to the fish?
Read more about Lost a grayling this size or bigger then a while later caught this one. Maybe same fish idk but took me for a run way down stream on the 3wt.
I just started tying streamers. I've tied plenty of nymphs and dries but had never got into streamers. I started trying to catch bass at the lake by my house and wooly buggers were mostly catching crappie.
Hey y’all, I’m new in the Flyfishing world. Decided to tie my own nymphs (I euro nymph) and wanted to ask y’all, what nymph do you think I should try to tie? Here’s my 1st attempt
I’m quite new to tying and would appreciate feedback and tips and tricks for nymphs.First three rows are zebra midges sizes 18, 16 and 14. The shorter ones are tied on Hanak BL500 and the longer ones on Tiemco TMC100.The fourth row are pheasant tails.
By Chris Dore Things are hotting up in Southern NZ and to many Southern locals, this means Willow Grubbing time! Willow grubs are the larvae of the Saw Fly (Pontania Proxima) , and pupate within those angry red blisters found on the leaves of willow trees.
Read more about Got to break in my new dry fly setup on an awesome Hendrickson hatch. I see a lot of Winston and Orvis rods out here. Are there any Hardy fans?.
Hey yall, just got into tying, I now have a Renzetti saltwater traveler, a bunch of tools, resins, materials, and I need a good bag/case to organize it all for storage and travel! I did score that little bass pro bait binder which is great for the materials that come in smaller bags, but not so m...
I’m relatively new to fly tying. I’ve been following some tutorials and made elk hair caddis and such. I tried my hand at some Trico Spinners. Is this a good fly?
Tied up a few of these for fun today. I have read these inverted dry flys have a hard time hooking up a fish but we shall see. I do like the shape it gives.
I took both the lure rod & fly rod out today. I bought this rod in February & have never really used it besides 1 20 minute session a few days ago, but I got too frustrated & picked up the spinner again.

Bonefish are on the move! Presenting your fly to a school of bonefish has to become second nature. There is often not time to make a plan. The successful angler is one who can make split second decisions and place the fly quickly and accurately. It's a little like shooting a shotgun.

In certain circles, it feels in vogue to criticize the way fly fishing guides go about their business. Just like with any profession, if you’re looking for things to poke at, you’ll find them.
"THIS IS THE KIND OF BONEFISHING THAT RUINS YOU. THE KIND OF FISHING THAT IMPAIRS YOUR ABILITY TO MAKE GOOD DECISIONS." The sky is a perfect robin's egg blue. Reflections of the morning sun dance on the underside on the mangroves giving the bright green leaves an unnatural glow.
The bow of the skiff rises and falls under my feet as my eyes scan the vast expanse of blue and green. We call this riding the bull. Balancing on a casting platform as the boat bobs and shifts in the surf. Out on the ocean side, that’s where you find migrating tarpon. These big fish push past in schools, often single file.
In the old days I ran a hedge fund. That’s right. Half a billion dollars doing whatever I told it. Big trades, big profits (and losses) and big pressure. I learned a lot from a decade in that role that has helped me on the stream.
By Chris Dore Angling ethics and on-stream behaviour are a big deal here in NZ due to the unique qualities of our fishery. Gin clear water hosting sometimes less than several fish per mile mean that if you walk past, there’s a good chance they will see you and spook to cover for the remainder of the day.

THE TELLICO NYMPH IS A SOUTHERN CLASSIC. Named after the storied North Carolina river where it was proven fool big browns, the Tellico Nymph is a southern as moonshine and just as effective. It's a simple impressionistic fly that works in any size, although #10 is a favorite.
While I appreciate Orvis keeping its long-running Recon rod series alive, I wish they’d update the name whenever they refresh this stick. Each iteration has been called the “Recon,” but I had the chance to review their latest version, which debuted early in 2026.
By: Alice Tesar My outdoor gear is always put to the test when I take it for a spin with my toddler. Recently my partner and I were fishing with him at a local spot that has a wide rocky bend. We let him play around, eat a few rocks, and investigate sunbathing snakes while we got some casts in.
How do you find and catch trout on days when there doesn’t seem to be much action? When the river looks like it’s boiling with rising trout and you’re having to wipe the BWOs out of your eyes just to tie on a fly, it doesn’t take a degree in entomology to catch fish.
Is there a link between vinyl records and fly fishing? I'm prepared to make a completely unreasonable argument. Whether or not you agree with it, it might actually help you catch more fish. If not, it will absolutely make for a better music listening experience.
By Louis Cahill This easy fishing knot will help you catch more fish. I learned the Double Figure 8 Loop Knot when I started getting serious about tarpon fishing. It quickly became the go-to knot for all of my saltwater and streamer fishing. I even use it to attach nymphs from time to time.
"I thought you might like these," my brother Tom holds out an old yellowed envelope. "I found them going through some of Pete's things." William Starling Cahill, who preferred to be called Pete, was my Grandfather and the man who taught me to fly fish.
“TWITCH, TWITCH, STOP!”, EXCLAIMS MY GUIDE, EDUARDO. I’ve heard these words all week and now it's just become second nature for me as soon as my dry fly hits the water. I have to admit though, it's been extremely effective. We’re taught as newbies to focus on presenting our fly on a drag free, dead drift and that's great.
Tying at my bench tonight and going through my boxes. (First pic is whatever, second is mine tonight)I’m trying to tie up stuff for summer steelhead and saw this.I was on the Clearwater in Idaho in Feb and the guide said “try this, it caught two yesterday”.
After 20 minutes in the river, caught a snag with my streamer and gave it a tug. Now I get to replace a blank for my Echo Lift. After having it for 3 years and snapping it twice (could be me, I don't want to disparage Echo, I'm still new at fly fishing) , maybe something more sturdy is in order.
I’m pretty new to fly fishing. Today I went to Sipsey Fork in Central Alabama for the second time to try to get some trout. It was a beautiful day with no wind and the current was not very strong. I found a hole where trout were surfacing pretty continuously however I could not get them to bite on anything. I tied on everything in my box.
I SPOTTED THIS LITTLE GUY IN A HATCHERY SUPPORTED STREAM IN NORTH CAROLINA AND FISHED TO HIM UNTIL I CAUGHT HIM SO I COULD GET A PHOTO. While not common exactly, deformities like this are not unusual in either hatcheries or in the wild but you seldom see a 'special' fish like this in a wild stream.
I know what you're probably thinking, "Come on Kent, you wrote another freaking post about the importance of stealth for spooky trout? Yes, I did, but this isn't your average stealth post. Most of us already know spooky trout require anglers to move slow and quietly.
I don’t usually like to go above a #14 on the bow but stonefly nymphs are proven big fish producers and are happening right now.Simple and easy tie, looks sexy with a metallic brown bead
I think it’s a keeper! And I absolutely loved wading out into 35° water❤️ yeah, I know I didn’t have much of a chance of getting anything, I just wanted to get back out there so bad 😅
I’m very new to fly fishing and fly tying, and I don’t have a ton of flies or material yet, so feel free to critique my mistakes and make suggestions, these are my attempts at a flashback pheasant tail and a wooly bugger!
Local attractor pattern from the Bow River. Usually tied on a short shank but I don’t think the fish care. One of the easiest patterns ever, flash tail and micro straggle body.Maybe a boatman? Maybe a micro leech?Either way it works.
The air around me is hot, still and thick enough to breathe with a knife and fork. The edges of my hair are damp with sweat. The bow of the boat bobs gently under my feet to the steady "bloop, bloop" of the push pole. All around me the world is a blue-white cyclorama. The sky sopping up the sea without a trace of horizon.
Is it me or do all streamer boxes just look like we throw up all of our streamers into a box! I just tried reorganizing it and it’s just a pile of feathers and hairs haha.
Brand new to fly fishing (haven’t gone out yet) and new to fly tying. These are my first 3 flies size 16 zebra midges with 2.4mm tungsten bead. Any advice is welcome.
By Daniel Galhardo I believe fly-fishing is first and foremost and excuse for us to spend time outside. And it is an incredibly good one. But, deep down it is truly nature, the environment where we find ourselves, that keeps us going out for more.
In this week’s “How to Tie” feature, Davie McPhail ties a classic pattern that has brought more trout to hand than possibly any other, the Hare’s Ear Nymph. Learn How to Tie This Fly: Difficulty: Easy This pattern has made several appearances in this series through variations, but surprisingly never for the original design.
Recently bought some Hareline small plastic rattles for fly tying, but haven’t seen much info on them or patterns that incorporate them. Wanted to see if anyone else ties with rattles and if they see success with them? Also would love any other general feedback.
THERE ARE FEW GUYS OUT THERE SQUEEZING CORK WITH THE ANGLING CHOPS OF TOM ROSENBAUER. Tom is the author of nearly two dozen books on fly fishing and too many articles to count. Add to that his podcast and posts on Orvis News and it's fair to call him one of the leading educators in the field.
Sewing thread is just so much cheaper and accessible than fly tying thread. Are my flies actually being affected by using the wrong thread? Pic for attention.
Can you pros shed some light on how to approach this?I was standing across closer to B throwing some live salmonfly type of bugs expecting some little 6inch redband trout when a ~4lb monster took it right at about A.
I've been enjoying tying streamers lately, and it's about time I start learning how to tie the ones with deer hair heads. I've never tied anything with deer hair, so I'm looking for good patterns for starting out learning how to tie with deer hair.
Nice little resident cutty on my local water. Mostly small guys this time of year but managed a few 14”s. BWOs out in serious numbers with the odd caddis, but caught this one on a blowtorch variant. Gotta love the warmer weather.
I’ve started flipping rocks at my local stream and I’ve struggled to find information about aquatic insect identification and what patterns I can tie on to mimic the forage I find.
These are my favorite streamers this year. Last year i fished the single hook version and had way too much fun.Whats been your confidence fly this year?
A few months back I asked for recommendations for my Billy Pate Salmon Reel and a 4wt orvis that I came into possession of and decided to go the route of modern fiberglass because my introduction to fly fishing was an old Shakespeare.
by: Landon Mayer On many Colorado tailwaters, such as the Fryingpan, Blue, or Taylor, a good Mysis pattern is money. With so many Mysis shrimp patterns on the market, finding the best one can be problematic. Many lack the movement and color of the natural crustaceans.
I've been getting into trout fishing and want to bring my fly rod from MO to CO for a fishing trip. The catch is my wife and newborn are coming with me. Are there any good places to stay and fish close together? We're going the week after Memorial Day. Also looking to hike if I could get suggestions for that too.
I love trout fishing and have caught hundreds of them at this point but this one on my new fly rod was one of the funniest for sure. I was using a small black streamer in a small creek. Had a lot of fun can’t wait to hit the trophy section of the river next week!!!
It's my first season nymphing. Currently training at a local pond. Today I noticed there are lots of bloodworms, tiny tan midges, and these green caddis larvaes. I think I got the size about right (it's a bit short but I don't have longer hooks and I want to keep this #14 or smaller for roach).
It's your lucky day. You've somehow managed to get away from your busy work schedule and find time to spend a few days fly fishing for beautiful cutthroat trout out west. You've brought several trout to hand fishing a series of S-bends, and you feel like a hero.
This fly was absolutely killing it the last two days. Caught 11 brown trout 6-13" long and one rainbow about 12". I ended up loosing it after 8 or so browns and the rainbow. I really want to get some more or something similar to replace it.
Caught a couple fun rainbow stockers 30 minutes w/traffic outside Washington DC. Thought they stopped stocking it, pleasant surprise. Both on Size 18 zebra midge
Hi all,Caught this guy on the middle Rogue by Hellsgate Canyon. This was my first time out after getting waders in the Winter and maybe third time out ever. I travel and work on hydro dams and all my coworkers fly fish so I've been trying to get into it through YouTube and Tom Rosenbauer books.
By Louis Cahill When you hook a big bonefish in the mangroves, you only get one shot at landing him. Half the reason we target bonefish is that they are such powerful fighters. A relatively modest bone can put you in your backing several times during a fight.
I am a huge fan of Pat Cohens legs. He also has a book (Super Bass Flies) I highly recommend getting if you can. I’ve tied well over 75 of his deer hair frogs dialing the original pattern in but changing it a little bit to suite my needs. These are a lighter weight version of his flutter frogs that can be thrown on a 6-7 weight fly rod.
Some context: I am very new to fly fishing but not new to fishing in general. My Rod and Reel is the 5wt 9' Orvis Encounter with a 9' 3x leader on a Rio Gold line (I spent too much money on my line I think).
I know there are brook trout in the brook, but it is really cloudy and swollen with melt. Normally, it is crystal clear. Is it worth trying, or should I just wait for it to subside?
Hi, just getting into fly fishing and looking for some flys to get started out with for trout. I’m in VA and was wondering if this is a good option? Has anyone had experience with these or this brand and is it with the price? TIA
Three consecutive PB browns from the same hole upstream from the Texas Hole boat launch combat zone. The smallest took a black zebra midge, the last two took something my cousin in Montana tied for me (last photo)(not the actual fly used, the one in the photo still has a barb).

Like a lot of kids, I spent most of my adolescent summers chasing bass and bream on the local creeks and ponds in my area. Most days, a single rubber-legged popper tied to the end of my leader, was all that I needed to catch fat bream and the occasional lunker bass.

Moved up to NW ONT for school and started to target trout in the Thunder Bay region. I've caught some medium-sized Lake trout and some 3 -5 inch rainbows on a fly rod.
Tied up nice and buggy with UTC olive 140 Denier on a Dai-Riki 060 with bright green herl, lemon lime flash, olive hen saddle, olives hares ear dubbing, and olive rabbit zonkers. Lightly weighted with some .020 lead wire to get to the carp in the pond at my local park.
I was fishing stocked trout in a small stream in Montgomery County Maryland the other day and the trout were rising frequently at dusk. I am not sure what they were eating. I saw one mayfly looking bug but do not think that was the main hatch. I would like to try to fly fish but do not know much.
Looking for your favorite fly tying kits - I don’t need material at the moment but looking for a beginner vise and tool set up. There’s a clarkfork kit from Kingfisher that I saw and is in my cart unless there are other recommendations from the group!
By Bob Reece From still to moving waters, members of the Chironomidae family abound. As a result of this, they are frequently found on the dietary menu of trout. Having a diverse selection of imitations for this family of insects can greatly increase your chances of connecting with fish.
Long time lurker, but first time posting. Im new to fly tying and am looking for suggestions for assorted boxes of beads that provide a variety of sizes and styles (off set, slotted, countersunk, ect.). I would also love some advice on sizes I should focus on.
Great day to fool some big ones. Took this buck on a local freestone with a black streamer. New York State.“There are no safe paths in this part of the world. Remember you are over the Edge of the Wild now, and in for all sorts of fun wherever you go”.-J.R.R. Tolkien
I mostly fish large rivers and lakes with an 8wt and 6wt TFO (love them). When I hit the smaller creeks I go to a 5wt glass rod (very noodly) which I like very much. But I have access to some very narrow and brushy creeks with trout and smallies (that get little pressure) and wonder if I should go a little lighter and modern to enjoy these fully.
Made a dumb mistake replacing a 5wt trout setup with an 8wt and didn’t switch the reel out. Bought it cause I liked the but had the cork on it. Have a new 5wt coming so what reel should I buy
Landed this beauty on Exuma. 9’ 8wt with 9wt line and on an ugly little fly I tied before the trip. 4th bonefish I’ve ever caught and god damn do they put up an amazing fight. Exuma Point Beach around 5:30 for anyone on the island 🤘
My dad surprised me with this nice reel my brother and I gifted him back in the late 90’s/early 2000’s ish. He doesn’t fish anymore and I’ve been really into trout fishing over the past year or so. Have plenty of ultralight spinning and bass setups.
Quick question how far back do you trim your rubber legs? This was my first real streamer and articulated streamer at that. I am pleased for my first go.
For the last ten years, my early-season routine in Western New Hampshire has been identical: freeze to death in a damp sleeping bag in the back of my Tacoma, wake up with a stiff neck, eat a cold Pop-Tart, and stumble into the freezing river by 5:30 AM.This weekend, my non-fishing partner decided to tag along with the dog.
I have been throwing the idea of getting an inflatable around but wondering how many drift boat-able trout streams there are in the MN, WI, or IA area. I know there are plenty of small mouth, and Muskie opportunities, but for the purposes of this post I’m only wondering about trout streams.
Last weekend went on a tarpon trip ended up with Redfish and snook started the trip out with Captin Taylor Schaeffer ran outside. We posted it up with his mourning bouy , but the water was too cold. Tarpon were acting weird. I was hoping to use the new one piece Hardy I picked up from Ole Florida Fly Shop but unfortunately nothing wanted to play.
HAVE YOU EVER MADE THE MISTAKE OF CUTTING OFF YOUR DRY FLY OR NYMPH RIG AND QUICKLY TYING ON A STREAMER TO TARGET A BIG FISH? You know, when your too lazy or in a hurry to take the time to upsize to the appropriate tippet size generally called for with streamers.
I am looking at getting a Stillwater rod for fishing for rainbow trout in BC interior lakes. I already have a 9’ 5 weight, but have been kicking the tires on a Loomis 10’ 4 weight.
Would appreciate some feedback on my inventory of dries and nymphs. I fish the Rockies in Colorado, Wyoming, and Idaho. This is meant to be a general selection that covers 90% of situations - I'll visit a local shop for the one or two occasions a year I need giant salmonflies or something like that.
I'm relatively new to fly fishing and mostly fish stocked stillwater trout these are all my dries and emergers. has anyone got any more recommendations?
This post is long overdue. This was the weekend of February 21. But just wanted to share some of the awesome photos we got and the fish we were able to jump. I was with the boys from the Ole Florida fly shop in Boca Raton, Florida. We got lucky because the wind knocked down, and it wasn’t awfully cold. We ate well, drank well.
Stand up with me here streamer guys, you know what I'm talking about! First of all I am in no way making light of Ms. Parks courageous acts or life of service. She is on my list of personal heroes and that list is pretty damn short.
Hi. New to fly tying.I'm trying to learn to tie frenchies well and after I tie in the pheasant tail with a few thread wraps I have found difficulty in wrapping the pheasant tail. Usually half the tails come out before I make 1 full wrap.
I did take the precautions before handing this fish, but I do know now it is always better to use a net. This will likely be my last catch ever...I am pretty bad at this
First time fly fishing but not my first time fishing in general. Not sure what these patterns are but the bug was a lot of fun to fish cause I could see the fish take it and the yellow one (after some trial and error) was fun to fish by feel.
A landmark Colorado acquisition, a conservation follow-through in Georgia, and a sweeping federal access directive add up to a strong spring for angler access on public land.
The brown trout were loving the San Juan and squirmy wormies this weekend. I got a few on a frenchie jig, too, but there was a clear preference for the worms! The purist in me likes to go with the classic San Juan worm with the chenille body, but I keep hearing that the rubber jiggly/wiggly squirmy wormies are more tempting to trout.
By Jeff Hickman IT'S TIME FOR THE BIG BOYS. With the rapidly increasing popularity of Spey fishing, targeting Chinook salmon has also recently become hot. These large powerful anadromous fish have always been attractive to fly fishers in areas with strong populations.
I was told it couldn't be done. That this fish in this system was the holy grail and I would never find it. I caught a wild steelhead on the Squamish River 2 weeks ago before the river blew out. Not a big chrome, but my first chrome, and the most special fish I've ever caught 😊
Central NY. Last couple days were below freezing, water is high because we got quite a bit of rain before it got cold. Today was mostly overcast with occasional sun peeking through. It was windy, temps mid to high 40s.I was mostly fishing with nymphs, strike indicator and without.
Caught limit in 1.5 hours all on black buzzer 3ft under a floating daddy longlegs. Last bigger 3ibfish was on an orange blob fished roly poly. Lovely trout tandoori for dinner.👍
Study the stream bed, brown and green. Through ripples and reflections, we find rocks and wood, maybe a shining piece of metal someone has left behind. Even the flash of a flake of mica in the sand, no bigger than a fishes scale. How is it that we miss the trout.
I decided to try my hand at fly fishing back in December and bought a 9’ 5wt and a 7’6” 3wt. After a few unsuccessful trips I finally caught a few brown in Hot Creek in California on a recent trip to the Eastern Sierra. The afternoons of practicing fly casts in my front yard paid off.
Hey All! Have been looking for great fly fishing kayak and have narrowed it down to these 2, the Kaku Wahoo 12.5 and Crescent LTII.I have read both paddle great and have good stability but would love more input.
So I took an Orvis fishing seminar and I have the bite. In your opinions what are some good brands to buy and learn on? As far as my range. I’m looking at 1K to 1200 for everything. Shoes, waders, rod reel, net the whole thing.Orvis was pushing hard on their gear but dayum that was pricy.
Back in 2006, I spent a season guiding in Alaska at Mission Creek Lodge. It was a great experience and a hell of a lot of hard work, but I held my own and ended up representing well for Southeastern fishing guides.
I am pretty new at fly fishing, so my gear is limited. I picked up a reddington edc 5wt and cheeky drip 375 which can handle 5/6 wt. I am from New england so its primary use for me is trout fishing. However, I am going to Florida from April till June and want to use it down there for some bass fishing, if feasible.
As a beginner, if you thought picking a fly rod was tough with all the options on the market, you’ll probably feel like that’s child’s play compared to picking out a fly line.
Geezer Technology Geezer technologySome ideas are so weird their only value is curiosity. When drifting through "creative design space" it is important to have goals in mind. The goal here was to make a small dry fly, mayfly tube fly. I seem to have done it.The only problem is why.
Read more about Purchased my first fly rod setup last night and caught my first fish on it! Looking forward to Sunday to figure it out on the Chattahoochee!.
"The pond was full of those great lily pads, and I guess that's where the problem started." I guess I should be happy, but I'm not. Ever since my in-laws moved to South Carolina the compulsory visits have had a silver lining. I discovered a little bass pond just down the road.
Thought y’all would enjoy. He’s going to try them just to see what happens! Feathers from a duster, paper clip, twine. Don’t worry, he’s got a box full of real flies too.
What are people's thoughts on this? There is a known spot on a local creek that gets stocked and every year these trout seem to all sit in one little hole the size of SUV. I got there and there were two dudes fishing it so I walked up stream where I knew there were no fish but figured I'd practice casting and maybe they'd scare one up to me.
ELATION, PANIC AND EPIPHANY. THAT'S THE USUAL ORDER OF EMOTIONS WHEN AN ANGLER LANDS THEIR FIRST BIG TROUT. I had the pleasure of seeing a dear friend land his first trophy trout recently and I think that's a pretty fair description.
Should I avoid fishing this "winter" level runoff in Southern Idaho? I imagine spawning will be more difficult, but are there specific precautions I should be take? Obviously, obey regulations.
I went out to a popular river this morning and saw a spot I could clearly see fish(trout) from the shore. They weren't moving around much, just kind of hanging out at the bottom. I waded in about 10-15 feet downstream at an angle from the spot I saw the fish hanging out and began casting.
Fished a stretch of a Colorado river today. Could see a ton of fish, and some were rising sporadically.Earlier (1pm) I landed two fish with a small olive bugger, but that seemed to turn off.Eventually I was watching fish rising… tried dry droppers… tried nymphing…. Even broke out the squirmy wormy of shame.
How am I doing? The first picture is my first go and the second is one I did today. Any tips are greatly appreciated.I'm using the White River deluxe fly tying tool kit.
I’m looking to get into fly fishing. I grew up fishing, moved away from it for a good 15 years but my brother rekindled my love for it by inviting me out on the ice a few times this winter.
Me and my wife are planning an 8 night trip out to Idaho in September. What are some of the best streams, creeks, and rivers to hit while we’re there? I would really like to snag a nice trout or salmon! We can do a multi day trek to a location as well.
Inspired by a recent post with patched waders, I am curious what is the best approach for finding small holes in waders. I have tried turning them inside out, then hanging them and filling them with water and spot leaks that way.
Not the prettiest patchwork but I work 4 days a week in these orvis waders so as some point you stop caring about what they look like and start caring solely about whether they hold wader.
Hi everyone, I'm wondering about fly line differences in value and how much more actual effectiveness you get per dollar. right now, on most of my rods, I'm using SA frequency boost, which is about $60-70 line.

Damn it if this isn’t hard af, my first time swinging flies. Decided to head out and see if I could find anything before the rivers close for good. Managed to line up a good window with a heavy rain that pushed some chrome upriver without blowing everything out.
Picked up the Contact lll 1093 and honestly bummed. I came from using the Contact ll and loved that rod but feel I have lost so much with this one. I’m curious what people think but I personally want to go back to the prior generation despite wanting to like this new release.Loss of power - Rod feels like it has lost its backbone.
I’m new to fly fishing just my second time out ever and I have no idea what I’m doing.I have a 9ft 5wt rod and 5/6 reel. 9 ft 4x leader and 4x tippet. So I was using a double nymph rig with a #12 stone fly as my first fly.
In this week’s “How to Tie” feature, Fliesbyaspeen ties an easy mayfly nymph that trout anglers will find efficient on both vise and water, just in time for spring. Learn How to Tie This Fly: Difficulty: Easy Spring is the essence of life and a warm turning point in the year.
Fall is one of the best times of the year for fly anglers wanting to target big smallmouth bass on reservoirs. Particularly if the lake impoundment has good populations of shad, blueback herring, or other native baitfish.
I looked at some fly tying tool holders/tool stations and I didn't really find one I thought was perfect.I want something else but I don't really know where to look.Creative ideas appreciated.
Now 1 month into fly fishing and consistently catching fish every trip. River season closes in a couple months so then it’ll be a new learning curve learning how to fish lakes. Tight lines
We may earn revenue from the products available on this page and participate in affiliate programs. Dry fly fishing is an addiction. Watching a trout rise slowly from the bottom of the river to slurp down your perfectly drifted fly does something to your brain that makes you instantly want more.
HERE'S ONE IMAGE AND AND A BRIEF STORY FROM AN ESSAY I DID FOR HATCH MAGAZINE. TO SEE THE REST OF THE IMAGES VISIT HATCH. YOU'LL BE GLAD YOU DID. In August of 2010, at he end of a hectic and exhausting summer, I found myself in western Alaska for a week at the Alaska West Lodge. Frankly I was a little burned out.
Fish for your attention. Im considering an 8wt rod for steelhead and some ocean beach casting. Im thinking tfo nxt, tfo ntr3, cortland sl 444, two aventik 8wt sink lines and a cheap aventik reel for poverty level ocean beach casting.I am spending more on steelhead, but would like the option of some beach casting if i end up over there.
Biggest brook trout for me! And some others !I’ve spent countless weeks and hours trying to find a big brook trout and a stream that could hold one. Most of these streams are small and most wouldn’t even think there are fish greater than 2 inches in them. Let alone any.The stream I went to was somewhat remote, and took a lot of walking.
We made it out to our local State Park today and had a good day. I fished a vintage glass rod that my dad found in his house and gave to me. My casts got a little sloppy with the slower action but I love how the glass feels. My only knock against it is the weight, it feels like swinging a bat compared to my modern 9ft 5wt fast action.
Picked myself up a new reel at my local fly fishing shop! Super excited to get back out on the water and try and get my first trout on my fly fishing set up. Caught a couple of small bass and bluegill last season.
I bought my first ever fly rod back in December and haven't had a chance to use it until yesterday. I've never fly fished before and all I'll say is I don't think I'll be touching any of my spin rods ever again. Tight lines everyone
By Paul Pucket FISHING WISE, I HAVE NEVER HAD A YEAR LIKE THIS ONE. I am fishing in places I have never fished and feel very lucky to have the opportunities. The main difference between this year, and the prior years spent chasing these mindless, slimy, instinctual creatures, is that I am limited to one fly. All year. The Everglades Special.
My first trip to Pyramid LakeI only recently got serious about fly fishing, and I jumped in on a club trip to Pyramid Lake, home of the Lahontan Cutthroat. Huge, beautiful, amazing creatures. I wasn’t able to get photos, but imagine standing tail deep in water with dozens of 5-30 pound fish swirling around you.
Chattahoochee River ~ 15 miles down river of the Buford damBased on my last post, the common consensus was all rainbow is the Hooch tailwater are stockers or holders.
There’s something about getting friends and family into this sport! So satisfying seeing their reaction and pure happiness fighting a fish for their first time on a fly rod.

Just bought my first euro rod and went out today to use it, targeted this rainbow for a good while had him eat once and missed it then eat again and bring him home! (Stocked fish ofc)
Went out with a hopper dropper today bc I’ve been seeing tons of grasshoppers and it’s warm and windy. This guy hit my dropper fly and I didn’t even realize it. It was a scramble to get control but I landed him! Switched to a little popper after and got some gills.
By Louis Cahill How do you connect your leader to fly line when the pressure is really on? This is sure to be a lively topic. I wasn’t aware this was such a hot button topic until I published an article by Devin Olsen titled, “Making The Connection,” and watched the comment section light up.
I fly fish a lot, and have been tying flies and building rods for years. Apart from heavy or salt water rods, I’ve never given too much thought to reels though, and usually run them on the cheaper end for 5wt and under. A relative who was hardcore in his younger years fishing in Appalachia recently passed away and I inherited these guys.
When I got into carp fishing I was under the impression that carp are super picky and I felt like I had to have every style of carp fly, after having some more experience and messing around with different patterns I’ve found there are really only a couple of styles of fly worth fishing.
Suckers are going crazy here in the Ozark’s so I tied up an orange fly to imitate them for smallmouth. The spooks are 5.5 inches and just shy of 7inches.
Though I’d share that I found a cheap way refill dry fly shake bottles. It’s now hunting fletching powder used to keep feathers dry on arrows. Same exact thing found in dry fly shake, for a fraction of the cost (hydrophobic fumes silica). Just be sure to use a mask when handling it.
On the first official Travel Creel trip, a group of anglers gathered on the Oregon coast chasing winter steelhead. Travel Creel founder Joshua Schwartz had organized the trip around a simple idea: bring good people together around great fishing and even better food.
By Louis Cahill Are you walking past the fish of the day? From where I’m standing, in water that barely covers my boots, I can see the next pool. A beautiful bend, dark green and lazy, with a big submerged log on the outside edge. A little riffle at the head, pouring into a deep pool. It’s the perfect picture of the old fishing hole.
I’ve been trying to track down this hook for a while, and I think I might have just found what it is. Does anyone know for certain what it is? I bought some from Kyle glass and they are the best pyramid hooks I’ve ever tied on.
Hi everyone, and thanks for any help you can provide. My situation is as follows: my father (70) has always dreamed of going flyfishing with me (34), as a plan, but he has done it just a couple of times in his life, many many years ago, and I've never done it.
Thanks to the few people with good advice on DIY trips to the Coyhaique area a few months ago. I’ve just finished a week in the area and am happy to add some observations for what it’s worth. There are ridiculously high numbers of tiny trout that becoming frustrating once the fun wears off.
I haven't gotten stuff for fly tying yet but I want to get started with it and I'm new to fly fishing overall I live in sweden and the main species would be stocked rainbows and wild brown trout what are some beginner patterns I could tie for these?
I’m no stranger to St. Croix fly rods. Growing up, those were the rods my dad had stashed behind the seat of his truck, and the rods I subsequently snapped in my first futile attempts to fly fish.
The maruta are entering the rivers of Eastern Japan now. The run isn't in full swing yet, there are enough fish around for a good day's fishing.7 Had a surprise carp too that certainly tested the 4x tippet and size 16 jig hook.
By Justin Pickett THE SETTING SUN IS WARM AT MY BACK AS I STAND AT THE REAR OF MY JEEP. I slip on my guard socks and wrench down on my boots until I’m happy with the fit. No need for waders today. The deep south humidity is smothering as I place my Buff around my neck.
Can we post fish-less pictures in this sub? 乚〇乚Had a lot of fun chasing the few bonefish I could find this morning at the Keehi Boat Harbor, but didn’t get a nibble. I’m new to the sport, and can almost get my fly close enough to the fish.I’ll try again ASAP!
I'm in GA and am usually a cold water trout/steel guy. I've been out of the loop and need a new vest for new hiking opportunities. Minimalistic. Any help is a big help.
hi everyone, my name is Enrico. I‘m from Italy and recently moved to Cambridge for university (I’m 23).I brought my fishing gear but I don’t have a car here. In this week’s “How to Tie” feature, Kelly Galloup with TheSlideinn ties a nymph that every trout angler with stoneflies in their water should fish this spring, the Corona Stone.
I'm going on a trip to Kauai, Hawaii at the end of April and looking to fish Anini beach and maybe another flat.I don't have experience fly fishing fishing saltwater, but I'm a fairly experienced in trout waters.
For March Madness, we thought it would be fun to put to the test a topic widely debated by fly anglers: the best species. In this March Madness Bracket Challenge, vote for your favorite species in each of four regions and see what comes out on top.
I had a short window to get out the other evening so I targeted some likely water on my home river, where I can almost always get into fish. Starting at a bend in the river, I rustled up some rainbows and whitefish on a double nymph rig; then switched over to a pine squirrel jig streamer and moved upstream to a glide under a cutbank.
By Louis Cahill IT'S TIME TO MAKE LIKE CAPTAIN NEMO AND GO 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA. Sometimes the only trick to catching fish is getting the fly down to their level. When you're nymphing and you're not catching fish it's always a good idea to add weight before changing flies. Often one split shot is the difference between fishing and casting.
Hey Front Range anglers. I know this sub is all over but the Colorado fly fishing sub doesn’t get much traction and I know there’s a good amount of us here. Anyway, just picked up a rod quiver for a rather great, even remarkable deal on marketplace. I lowballed the crap out of the guy (as one does on Facebook) and he bit without a fight.
I would love to get some feedback on this topic because I am having a hard time deciding:For context: I am 6 months into fly fishing and loving it. I want to upgrade from my $60 starter pair of waders but I am having a hard time finding "the one"My Budget: $300 waders + $150 bootsI've been researching for weeks and I am too indecisive.
Hi all, this popped up locally to me. Looks like a beautiful rod. I know that some cheaper bamboo rods are janky, but this looks fairly high quality. Any help with identifying weight would be appreciated. I asked the seller and they said they don’t see any thing on the rod. All I know is it’s an 8ft 4 piece.
This is to replace my 10yo Simms guiding boots. After reading a lot negative feedback with regards to the recent decline of Simms gear quality, I opted for this one. I have high hopes that this pair would last longer than the Simms. Can’t wait to try them on the next trip.
There's a spectrum to fly tying that doesn't get talked about enough. On one end, you've got the purists—tyers who want every fiber placed just so, every segment colored to mimic the real thing down to the lateral line.

Finally taking the plunge and getting some waders as I’ve dunked my boots a few too many times in the winter chill - wondering if anyone is feeling generous and willing to share their Patagonia promo code to make it hurt a little less. Would be greatly appreciated on my seasonal work salary!
Over the past half-decade, as I’ve dived into teaching new anglers on essentially a full-time basis, I’ve come to realize quickly what is and isn’t necessary for a day on the water. You need a rod, reel, line, leader, tippet, split shot, indicators, floatant, flies, and a net.
Hit the Everglades for the first time and ended the day with a couple of these guys and a snook. The first one in the photo was a freaking rocket, it must have jumped 6ft in the air and almost landed in the boat twice. First tarpon I ever casted at was 80+ and I ripped the fly right out of his mouth.
Reminiscing about an awesome week of fishing in the mountains last summer with my buddys! My friend recently found this picture he took and forgot about. Thought it looked pretty cool
MIDGE PATTERNS CAN BE REMARKABLY EFFECTIVE FOR TROUT. Depending on how you count them there could be over a thousand species of midge. That's a lot of choices for the discerning trout. There are almost as many choices for the angler and a midge obsession can easily get out of hand. I find that more times than not a Blood Midge will do the trick.
Hi!I recently got a Maxcatch Gold 7wt floating line. Mostly for testing, but also for trying trout fishing in rivers/small lakes. I'm not rich, so splurging for a 4 or 5wt kit is not an option yet, considering how I 90% of the time fish in saltwaters. But the end goal is to buy a 5wt rod. My question is...
So I love bonefish I love all the saltwater flats fish but I live in Cali so I don’t think there’s any flats near me but lots of lakes whats the equivalent to flats in freshwater?
Hi All, still new to tying but hoping to home make all my flies for this upcoming trout season. I’ve already tied a ton of wooly buggers, EHC, PT nymphs, and zebra midges (plus have the supplies for the Adams).
From our trip two weeks ago—back when snow still covered the ground. But spring is around the corner -brook trout were rising to dry flies, and snakes have begun to stir.Take it easy and get out there.
Hi guys. My local river trout season just started today, I’ll be heading out tomorrow evening for the first cast of the season. The river is quite high just now & is moving quickly.
Some of the many fish I caught a couple of weeks ago at Patagonia Baker Lodge. Didn’t set any records, but all the fish were solid, and made us work for them. Nymphs, big & small dries, and streamers-all worked! A fantastic place and people. We even got a copter flight in down to the lodge.
Things are heating up in our DIY fly rod build. Matt Draft is back for the third video in our seven part series on building your own fly rod. In this video you’ll learn about tip tops, how to spline a rod blank, wrap your guides and get everything aligned.
Spent about 3 hours at some Trout Unlimited land that I’m building a disability accessible fishing ramp for and caught 35 trout. I originally posted onr/flyfishing, but a lot of people were being rude and it got taken down.
The weather has been nice for a week or two so today I headed for the first session of the year. Expectations were low since I had never fished this early into the year.My plan was simple: two rods, 7wt streamer rod with intermediate line and a couple woolly buggers and a 5wt with floating line for nymphs and dries.
2 size 4 b10sRabbit strip, ice dub, flash, and deer hair.I lead wrapped the keel of the front hook. I almost always do this with all my streamers.Sits just above 3in long!I really prefer fishing small creeks but the past few visits let me know the fish aren’t in the smaller creeks yet.
I tan hides for fly tying materials and cut deer buckskin into fringe strips for wrapping segmented bodies (stoneflies, cicadas, etc.).I package it as “Fly Fringe.” It comes in natural white (hide not smoked) and tan (hide smoked over a fire).
By John Byron It’s a thing. Gear Acquisition Syndrome. GAS. The most you can use at any one time is one. One guitar. One fountain pen. One fly rod. But how many you have is N, where N is a much bigger number than one. That’s GAS. The concept and phrasing, GAS, came from the world of music. Yes, how many guitars, pickups, mikes, etc.
I just bought my first pair of stocking-foot chest waders and now I need to pick up some wading boots. I’m seeing a lot of mixed advice on sizing though. Some people say to buy your normal shoe size because the boots are already designed with extra room for the neoprene stocking foot, while others recommend going up a full size or even two.
Tucker, named after the Tuckaseegee River in western North Carolina, floated many streams and kissed many fishes in his 12 years with me. He’s seen everything from tailing redfish in South Carolina, smallmouth in Ohio, tiger trout in Utah, brown trout in Montana, even the elusive bull trout in Oregon.
My 8wt unfortunately had it's tip amputated by my car window.Getting a replacement tip in 1 week, but in the mean time should I use my5wt Orvis Encounteror my really9wt Cabelas Fish Eagle PT?The steelhead I catch here usually are 18-25", but occasionally get bigger.
I used to have a Diamondback All American 6ft 3wt 2pc, but it got stolen in 2006. It was perfect for fishing tight small overgrown New England brook trout streams.Diamondbacks canned the model. Shortest rod they offer is 7.5. Any suggestions for a 6ft 3wt?
Hey guys ! I'm in the process of buying waders with socking boots, but I can't decide which type of boot to get.I'm a complete beginner; I only fish in rivers in Canada, and I won't be going to the sea. I only fish some small fish here and there. I've heard that some people use hiking-style boots (with ankle support) with their waders.
I have been fly fishing for around 2 and a half years now, mainly with a 8’6 5wt fishing a double nymph rig under an indicator. I have been thinking about investing in a 9’ 4wt to euro nymph and i was wondering if it’s worth it or not.
I am starting my second full season of fly fishing and spend a fair amount of time on the Cape in the summer (usually early and late summer). An older neighbor recently gave me two rods that he used to use for striper fishing; 8 and 9wt Orvis rods and a Battenkill reel.

Woodworking has taught me a few things about fly fishing. Before Gink and Gasoline I was, for a time, very involved in the world of woodworking. I was fortunate to photograph and spend time working with some of the most talented folks in the field, many of them are still great friends.
Just queck pics phone photos. I have some IT work do finish before I can ho high quality light tent focus stacks.I make these in my hands fithouv a vise. Bead is as you like it. Small rnd lihht or big and heavy. Big Horn or Yellowstone?6" inches four and three above.
The art of fly tying is synonymous with the act of fly fishing itself. For many, fly tying is a way of expressing what they learn on the water, turning feathers and fabrics into works of art to fool fish. The feeling of catching a fish on a fly you tied has inspired countless anglers […]
I'm wanting to get into fly fishing, as I'm going to the Smoky Mountains by Cosby Creek in Tennessee. I'm just uncertain whether I should get a 4 or 5wt rod for trout and panfish.
SLACK IS NOT YOUR FRIEND. When fly fishing in saltwater, keeping the slack out of the system is job one. Slack can cause missed fish, long distance release and even refusals. A tight line is key at every stage of the process, but many anglers overlook the initial presentation.
Hey all, been fishing a 5wt on rivers and lakes for my entire tenure. My local is mostly lakes, apart from a small creek here and there with tiny browns.
The fly fishing community feels like a big family. We get together a few times a year for reunions at the fly fishing shows, and occasionally meet up on the water for a trip. There is a reason we are so close. It is because we are all passionate about this wonderfully weird sport where […]

Tied up a couple Film Critics today for WNC’s warming weather. Took about 5 or 6 to get the feel of the hackle stacker but I’m pretty happy with the last two. Feedback welcome! These are my first non jig nymphs so a whole new world 🫨
How often to you think anglers miss opportunities catching trout because of the lack of stealth? The more educated trout populations are in a stream, river or lake you're fly fishing, the more important it is for fly anglers to mimic the way a hunter stalks game in the field.
New to western fly fishing. I picked up a Clearwater combo recently, and I'm excited to head out when trout opens here. I have noticed however that the movement of the rod will cause the reel to turn slightly back and forth producing a click as it spins regardless of how tight the drag is set at.
So I’ve loved carp fishing on conventional tackle they fight crazy hard and they’re some cool looking fish and i know people target them on a fly so I was wondering if it’s fun, what flys, what weight rod, and how to catch them on a fly
I'm looking for an 8wt fly rod for largemouth bass, throwing Clousers and poppers... the standard LMB flies so a fast action rod would be good. I was also considering the Echo 84B.
Finally got into fly tying in the last month. Started with zebra midges and am working on buggers now. Hoping to get into sulphurs and parachute adams sooner than later!
I was just admiring a recent catch a made and got curious about the particular coloration it had.A quick google search and I stumbled upon a condition that happens with fish called “Black Spot Disease.” Should I be concerned and inform my local wildlife and game commission? I caught couple like t...
DID YOU KNOW THAT 10% OF THAT NEW FLY REEL GOES TO SUPPORT FISHERIES? It's true. Thanks to the Pittman-Robertson Act of 1937 and the Dingell-Johnson Act of 1950, a 10% excise tax on all hunting and fishing equipment goes into a trust fund to support fish and wildlife management.
Here’s another fly that was tested out. I can’t remember the name of this fly but it’s a nice musky fly. I am in love with the action for bass.Thoughts, opinions, critiques are always welcome!
My first attempt at this pattern! One of my goals this year is catching carp. The book “Carp on the Fly” told me this was a go-to pattern so I followed Brian’s tutorial from Mad River Outfitter to get this hook up presentation.
Read more about URGENT - I lost a box of flies at Ken Lockwood Gorge(NJ) on Saturday and just realized it, thin blue box of wooly buggers, and some Chernobyls. about 20-30$ worth of flies. Please if anybody finds it please message me asap!!! I cant afford to buy new ones :(.
Had a banger of a day on a Wisconsin spring creek. Fished in-between some rain showers and managed 30 some fish in only 4 hours all on dry fly bites (The best kind)! Fell in love with my new Moonshine Rod Company 7'6" 3wt. That thing will bomb a dry fly to the moon and back, accurately!
When it comes to fly fishing for trout, I’m a complete streamer junkie. No matter where I’m fishing, what hatch is happening, or what flies are actually working, I’m always looking for an excuse to tie on something big and ugly and go searching for a monster.
Some fish turn into goals you measure seasons against. For Kieran Hoffman, the chase for a true double-digit largemouth had followed him for years. He’d come close, but never on the fly, and after more than a decade of casting and learning, it started to feel less like a dream and more like unfinished business.
Caught my first fish yesterday on my new fly rod. This is my 4th time out since I got into fly fishing in December and yesterday was the first day I caught a fish. Was using a copper john and a strike indicator. Caught about 7 bluegill in a 30 minute time span.
By Louis Cahill You can sure catch a lot of trout with no more than ten feet of fly line, but does that mean that casting doesn’t matter? I had this conversation recently. I was fishing a classic, pocket water stream with a friend and at some point he asked me point blank why I was catching fish and he wasn’t.
Hello,I'm not at all new to fishing, but am completely new to the world of fly fishing. I live in Southern Ontario, Canada, and once things warm up in a few weeks I plan on giving it a real effort.
So fishing is pretty much everything I do and I started fly fishing in the middle of last year so this is my first full year that I’m doing it and I’ve learned so much I can cast really well I know all about hatches I can read water but I just never catch fish and I don’t know what I’m doing wron...
Hi everyone, how are you all?I’m just wondering if anyone has a cool little life hack for storing wet boots and wet waders that I potentially haven’t thought of.I just use a plastic storage box right now, but I have to admit I do sometimes leave them in there or they get super dirty or shit falls...
Do any of you nymph for salmon or sea trout or have you tried nymphing for them? There doesn't seem to be much info about this approach and it isn't a popular approach in the UK but every now and then you hear about someone hooking one on a nymph or a wet fly, if it works I'm not sure why it wouldn't be more popular.
IF YOU'VE BEEN THINKING, "I LOVE GINK AND GASOLINE BUT I WISH IT COULD BE MORE LIKE JACKASS", THEN TODAY IS THE DAY YOUR DREAMS COME TRUE! There are two kinds of fishermen. The ones who have hooked themselves and the ones who are about to. It's a bad feeling the first time you put a big streamer hook in yourself past the barb.
New to the sport and have a few questions after my fire day out on my own. Previous experience was with a short class at a local fly shop, and a few day trips with a friend.
Hey y’all, I have fished my whole life but never got into fly fishing and was thinking about picking it up. Biggest concern is getting the necessary gear on a budget which is about $200 atm. Is this possible and what should I expect getting into this new hobby!
The last couple of nights, they’ve been slamming into our windows. So I tied up some simple beetles and headed to my local river. Spring is sprung, the Guadalupe bass and sunfish are eating, and all sorts of treasures are revealing themselves.
Every year, I'm asked by clients, when is the best time for them to come up and experience the terrestrial bite? For years, I kept a terrestrial fishing journal to help me better serve my clients. The journal documented the arrival times of specific terrestrials and when I first started catching fish on them.

These are some size 4 streamers I e been working on lately. Feedback is welcome, I’m kinda just learning to use the materials rather than a specific pattern. Generally trying to imitate small perch.
Do you like catching huge trout? Do you live in the Bay Area? Picture this: snowflakes falling over a trout stream, fish slowly rising to the surface, and you’re the only angler in sight. In an ideal world, every day of winter, fly fishing would look like this, but that is rarely the case.
By Chris Dore So we don’t have any Sea Trout here in New Zealand as many would know them, but we have some great sea run brown trout fishing. Our 'Sea Runners' are just your standard, wild brown trout simply exercising their efficient feeding patterns: they follow the food into and out of the salt as availability determines.
Haven’t been fly fishing too long so I am by all means still in the learning phase. I am an avid fisherman with your standard rod and reel, but fly fishing is a whole other sport I’ve learned! Anyways, thought I’d share this pic of what I would call my PB rainbow.
I’ve dabbled with dying my own deer hair before and it came out pretty well. My dad did it before he passed away, and I still have a lot of of his dyed white tail patches they make great Steelhead intruders and streamer heads, wings, props and all kinds of the stuff we love to tie with natural hair.
Two anglers from Missoula, who were on their way home from a fly fishing trip in the Seychelles off the east coast of Africa, are trapped in Dubai while Iran continues its attacks on countries throughout the region.
So I’ve been fly fishing for trout around Fife, Scotland for the last year (Wormit mostly with some River Eden failures lol) and I wanted a better way to track trips and conditions.I couldn’t find an app that focused on the stuff that actually matters to me when fishing, so I started building one myself. It’s called Fishable.
Found it last year while fishing in northern Italy. I don’t see a whole lot of them around here, just the occasional one along with the odd shuck along the banks. Preparing for the new season and figured it’d be worth having a few in my fly box incase I run into a hatch. TIA
Fly Fishing on alpine lakes for trout has become one of my favorite ways to spend a day on the water. There's something really special about making long accurate casts to rising trout on the move. It's very much a team effort between the fly angler and the oarsman. Often you can't just sit in one spot and expect to get shots at rising trout.
Had a great day in aitutaki fishing for bonefish and GTs. The bonefish are big and smart. Casting to them was much more like permit fishing than the bonefish I am used to on the Atlantic side of the world. Definitely worth a trip if you love challenging flats fishing.
My boss was working at a clean out and an old man left some fly fishing gear behind, of course he knew I fly fish and asked me if I wanted it. I know it’s a creel but I’m unfamiliar with the brand and age. HELP!
If you had to get a rod that can throw dries and indicator rigs, and then one dedicated streamer rod what would your choices be? Upgrading my redington trout classic setup and also getting a rod to throw some streamers.
New to tying and fly fishing, is there such thing as too much soft hackle on a pheasant tail? Also looking for advise on your preferences on soft hackles vs regular pheasant tails
Went fishing in a class A stream in Pa looking for brooke trout to my surprise thought I finally caught a brooke however realer this in instead is this a wild rainbow ?

For those who fish a DT line and have fished the 444 has anyone tried the new airflow double DT? Any thoughts or reviews? I’m coming from many years of WF lines and looking to start in with DT for some of my shorter casting and longer leader setups. Any insight is appreciated.
Caught this fish on an olive wooly bugger in Indian Creek in Jones Mills, PA. There is a tributary that supports a Class A wild brook trout population that empties into the stream not too far upstream of where I caught this fish.

Slippery bugger didn’t want to pose for a photo but stoked on my first fish on the fly. Caught on the Thredbo River, NSW 🇦🇺on a tan hi vis hopper. Spent a few days over the Christmas period on the rivers by myself learning on the fly but this trip I got to hit the river with my dad and learn to cast from him.
Caught this giant about a month ago at Pyramid. It ate a size 10 midge on 8lb fluorocarbon and put up a hell of a fight! It beats my previous best from earlier this season that went 19.75. Not a long fish, just super stout. The tail was probably 9” around at the base.
Ive been on a few camping trips with the fly rod and gone home empty handed. I went up to the Victorian high country in Australia to camp for a week recently with the family and was hoping to change that.I tried to put everything i had read into practice on the last fish of the trip, saw a rise and cast out to it.
Season opens this weekend where I’m at and I’m trying up some streamers for the first time as it’s still pretty cold so I’m not expecting a whole lot of dry fly action which is usually what I fish. Not sure on hook size but it’s a 6.5mm brass bead. The only rod I have is a 9ft 5wt and I’m wondering if a streamer of this size is too big for my rod.
By Bob Reece Dunnigan’s P.D. Nymph is a trout magnet. As I’ve moved further into my fly tying and fishing journey, I’ve been blessed to meet some outstanding people. Casey Dunnigan happens to be one of them. A skilled welder by trade, his ability to create with his hands is evident in his fly tying as well.
Went to Michael's over the weekend clutching the hot 40% off coupon for that craft fur I saw here a while back. I wanted to make some streamers/jigs out of it but I also came across some nice iridescent Christmas tree tinsel on clearance for a buck and change so I got a handful of packs.
Decided to have a rod custom made for my wife for Valentine’s Day knowing she would be more likely to actually try if she had something “cute” that is her own.Even though it’s early in the year we drove up to my favorite freestone river as she said she was ready to try it out.
Me and a couple friends are backpacking through the French pyrenees for 2 weeks in August. I am wondering if anyone has had success catching trout on any particular patterns and/or methods in the mountains.
Molded on the back of a waxy soup spoon.Fabric cement cures in an hour or two. UV resin almost instantly.I know from making molded diving bills too kig is best. All lightweight fly rod motion flures have to be tuned, once, either at streamside or in the bath tub.Tuning means snipping away with scissors or toe nail clippers.
I’ll have a day to fish the San Juan this week and am looking for some general advice. From what I’ve read sensitive indicator rigs seem to be the most common approach.
Perhaps this is a silly question, but here we go. If I'm snagged on a rock while nymphing, how do I actually unsnag myself? Coming from tenkara, it's recommended to collapse the rod and pull the line so as not to snap the tip.
So, Ive been fishing for over 30 years now, but I barely got into flyfishing about 3 years ago. One of the main reasons I started flyfishing was because I had gone camping to an area that had only wild trout and did not stock. I fished for 2 full days and didn't catch one fish.
By Justin Pickett As a beginner in the fly fishing world, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. And confused and while meandering aimlessly through a fly shop, or magazine, or a “big box” sporting goods store.
Rented a kayak to go on a nearby river today, and somewhat on a whim decided to take my fly rod (equipped with a standard floating line and wooly bugger) with me and see how it went. Overall I'd say it was kind of awkward, but one fish was caught and I'm interested to try more.

Wasn’t having g any luck with my streamers this afternoon so I threw on a rubber worm and stripped it in till this guy hit. Felt like bringing in a school bus!
Anyone had any really close calls/epic stories from wading? Looking to get into fly tying with a good quality vise and I see a lot of posts on vises. Is the renzetti traveler a solid vise choice. My only concern is I've seen some people saying it's quite small and portability isn't really a priority for me.

WHEN MICHAEL STIPE, LEAD SINGER FOR THE BAND R.E.M., MADE A STRING OF APPEARANCES ON THE COLBERT REPORT AROUND THE HOLIDAYS I WAS SHOCKED BY HIS CURRENT PHYSICAL APPEARANCE. To be sure, none of us are getting any younger and I applaud Stipe for embracing his graying hair and changing features, but there was more too it than that.
Stuck in an ihop for 24 hours… any nymph type fly suggestions would be great. I have shitloads of dubbing and hooks gonna just go crazy and finish my box with caddis lol
HelloPlanning a fly fishing trip in mid-April with a group of 4. Our home base will be Grandby, Colorado. Plan is to wade.Looking for any recommendations for some guides in the area!I'm sorting through Google and some look great but seeing what this group has to say.
I was fishing lake taneycomo tailwaters today and saw what I think to be a melanistic rainbow but I’ve never seen / heard of anything of the sort. Sorry the pictures are bad. I didn’t catch him just saw.
I wanna get into flyfishing but I do not know what kind of flies I should buy. in my region there is mostly sea trout, Atlantic salmon but also some browns and grayling.
I’m headed to the island of Eleuthera, Bahamas in about 2 weeks. I’m a novice fly fisherman. I’ve been working on my casting up at my cabin for a couple summers and would say I’m a C+ to B-. I’ll be staying right on the ocean, Atlantic side near Governors Harbour.
“Cuba is two weeks from today!!! Got to admit I’m a little nervous going where my phone and credit cards don’t work, and taking some ancient helicopter.” That’s the text I got from my buddy Geoff this morning. He’s had this Cuba trip planned for almost a year but it’s only now sinking in.

I want to go to baja to fly fish for marlin, tunas, dorados, roosterfish, etc.Where do you buy gear for thiskind of fishing? Cabela’s and bass pro rarely has any wt 11/12 rods. What is the right setup for rod, line, etc for this?

I’m getting into the sport a bit more now and I’m looking at getting a 9’ 5wt redington classic trout while I have some spare change but I was wondering how important the reel really is? I’ve always wondered if I’m able to fish in muddy water that’s chocolate milk colored. Could I just use a squirmy or a black streamer? Or is it not worth it if I can’t even see past 2 inches of clarity?

Fly fishing boats are tight spaces by design. Between rods, fly line, nets, and all the random essentials that pile up over the course of a day, it doesn’t take much for a clean setup to turn into a mess.
By Jason Tucker I could not have been more shocked to find myself in the Bahamas than if my spaceship had crashed there. The call came on Thursday. “Can you go to the Bahamas for a week?” “When?” “We leave Saturday.” I checked with my employer, girlfriend and bank account. For once in my life the answer was yes.
Had no luck pulling streamers, switched to the BFS rod and caught 3 over 22in in the last half hour. Slowly twitching a brown Yum hellgrammite on ned rig across the sandy bottom by the weed beds.
I'm going to be in Montana the first week of May to do some trout fishing. I'm flying into Helena and want to walk and wade. Given the possibility of runoff at that time of year, I've decided to concentrate on the Missouri below Holter dam.
Hey everyone!I’m heading to the Bay Area for a work trip in late March and I’ve cleared my schedule for several days afterward to squeeze in some fly fishing.
Jako Lucas is no stranger to the Fly Fishing Film Tour, nor far-off, stoke-filled destination fishing adventures. For this installment of F3T Behind the Lens, we sat down with the team behind Black Sheep: Jako Lucas of CaptainJack Productions and Wade Kelly of Flow State Productions.
Fly fishing streamers: because sometimes trout want a steak, not a salad. If you thought fly fishing was just about delicate dry flies dancing on the water’s surface, welcome to the big leagues—where bigger flies and bolder fish take center stage.
I was looking through old pictures from when I was guiding from a mothership in Oman. We would get schools of fish hanging out in our lights at night, and I figured out I could drift little flies to them in the tidal current.Pictured are a Lunar Fusilier, a black tip trevally, a striped fusilier, a flagtail, a wave Garrick/dart.
I’ll be in the Destin, FL area this June and would love the chance to target tarpon on the fly. So far, I’ve only found one charter that specifically offers tarpon fly fishing trips.

When choosing between graphite and fiberglass fly rods, it’s smart to consider where and how you fish. I got an email the other day from a reader. Here’s an excerpt: “I am looking at a 7wt predominantly for trout and smallmouth here in Tennessee.
Hello,We will be taking a cruise and stopping in Ketchikan one day in late May. I wanted to see if anyone has a fly fishing guide recommendation? We get off the boat at 6:30 and have to return by 3 pm. My Father in law and myself are experienced fisherman and would like to catch and release.
Hi everyone,I’m actively shopping for a second fly fishing rod in anticipation of next season. I currently have a 5wt setup that I bought last year to target trout and smallies.I’m looking for a second setup to complement it and I’m wondering if I should go with a 8wt or 9wt.
We live in WNC and typically can’t fish to much this time of year. But the fishing down in Florida when we went down there for the holidays was great! Caught this one on a really small ep bait fish pattern. Looked like an Everglades special.
While working in a fly shop once, an angler came in with a broken rod that he needed help sending in for warranty work. The manufacturer of the rod offered complete replacements, but did request that the angler explain how the rod was broken.

Weather was a bit cold and windy, but we got out there! Did some wade fishing around the Yellowstone near Livingston, and surprisingly had these whitefish go for some streamers?? Never thought that these guys would take a streamer, considering they usually eat nymphs.
Hi all, I’m an 19M and have fished for the best part of 10 years, however only ever done float, spinning and sea fishing. Recently i have inherited some fly fishing equipment which i am desperate to get out and try. However im finding the range of flys and types of line quite overwhelming and leaving me clueless what to use.

I've never flown for a fly fishing trip, but I'll be flying out to PA this spring and plan on getting some fishing in. How are people traveling with waders/boots? I see tons of options for transporting rods/reels, but less specific options for traveling with waders and boots.
Me and a buddy who are relatively new to the fly fishing world are planning a trip to the snake and Missouri rivers around late June and need some advice.
Hey yall!I want to hear feedback and experiences on people who have tried both the Orvis pro waders and Patagonia’sNot factoring in the price, I want to hear the experiences and thoughts on which one yall recommend and why! Thanks
Have found myself targeting panfish and wild brookies in small creeks with lots of brush and trees more lately. Wanting some opinions on a 3wt under or around the 300 dollar mark. Love my clearwater but wanting different from Orvis just to try another brand as well. Plan on using dries, nymphs, and small streamers.
I recently came on here and asked if anyone knew any European Taimen (Huchen) guides in Montenegro, and I followed up on the one lead and made the trip to the small town of Plav, where I met my great guide, Oki, who showed me around the Lim River.
April Vokey is one of the most recognized, and sometimes controversial figures in fly-fishing. Few anglers have been thrust into the limelight in quite the same way as April Vokey. April is the first to admit that she asked for it, but it hasn’t always been an easy ride.
I’m in eastern Idaho and do alot of trout fishing. Growing up I only learned how to spinner fish and we only used ugly stik. What’s the fly fishing equivalent of ugly stik? I want to get into fly fishing but not sure I want to spend so much money. Thanks
I want to get a higher end rod, starting with a range I generally fish a lot. A light all around fly rod, sans euro styles. This range suffices a majority of my fishing.it seems Winston stepped out a bit from their dry fly only vibe and the Air 2 looks appealing but I have not spoke with anyone who has fished one.
Caught a few smolt this winter but this is my first proper sized fish on a fly rod and my first steelhead/lake-run rainbow. Egg pattern under an indicator on a 6wt.
This is my first go at a Comparadun. I followed Charlie Craven’s X Comparadun pattern from his excellent book, Basic Fly Tying. I’m picking a pattern every few weeks and tying it until I feel confident. I’ve honestly never fished a BWO hatch before so I’m flying blind with the looks.
Weekend project. My best friend since childhood recently got into slow pitch jigging in saltwater. He asked if I could make him a sand eel imitating fly to replace the basic mylar teasers on his rig. Was excited to try because whatever fly I’d develop for myself should slay for his purposes.
So
I recently purchased a 7 foot 63 weight that I plan to use in small streams and little ponds for bluegill and trout. What's some good lines you guys use on a 3 weight rod, I'm assuming just a standard wait forward floating line? Bit open to different ideas. I currently own a 8 weight and a 6 and a 5 weight. This is my first 3 weight.
So obviously lead eyes are too heavy for a dry fly but this is my first attempt and I'm trying to hone technique with the materials I have for salt flies and wooley buggers as I live 2+hours away from fly shops with materials. But here is my first attempt at a Damsel :)
Debating on which one of these I should get for my first 5 wt rod. I'm new to fly fishing so when it comes to casting action I don't really have much of a point of reference. I already have a 4 wt and a 6 wt.
These are some wet n’ dry soft hackles that have produced consistently for me over the years. They’re meant to be fished on a team of three upstream over riffles on warm summer days in the sort of water that dries and weighted nymphs are kind of useless.
this morning but once you loose contact with your fingers probably time to call it. It is so peaceful to be on a trout stream first thing in the morning With a hot cup of coffee
I’ve never had a dog who was a really good fishing partner. When I brought Josie home, I knew that was going be be a goal. My dog and me out on the river, doing our thing without any particular plan. It sounds good on paper but anyone who fishes with dogs knows it isn’t always ideal. Ive definitely had dogs who weren't with the program.

Then, cast just ahead of the fish at a 45° angle. Let it drift a bit and then retrieve swiftly but slowly across the fish’s nose. 10/10 🎣.
I recently ordered a diamondback gen 4 online. The more I’m researching, it almost seems as though it could be viable as a dry fly rod as well. Is this true? If so, what qualities that a euro rod have that cross over into a dry fly rod? I purchase a 10’7”3wt. I know that there’s no “rules” but I want some opinions and knowledge.
Hello strangers on Reddit who share this wonderful hobby with me.Last summer I took a job at a private campground just so I could be close to my favorite trout stream. I fished almost every day after work and I would go solo camping on my off days and fish for hours.
Walk into any fly shop, or browse around online, and you’ll quickly realize there are more fly rod choices out there than questionable food at a casino buffet. In this case, though, picking a less-than-stellar rod won’t give you food poisoning, so there’s a lot less risk involved.

We’re staying at the hungry trout, which seems like a good affordable option close to the water.I’m curious if anyone can share any tips or hints for the areanotrelated to fishing.

By Bob Reece As we move toward spring, the presentation of streamers increases for many fly fishers. For those of us that tie our own, the use of some materials is far more common than others. Marabou tends to be one of those materials, particularly in the tails of many bugger style streamers.
Been getting lots of follows but there always turning off it when the weighted streamer drops. So little foam front guy lifts on the pause and the fish approve. Also kicks side to side really nice. Size 4
When building a leader with a tippet ring for 5X fishing, which base provides better turnover and longevity: starting with a7.5ft 2X/3X/4X leaderand adding 5X tippet to the ring, or starting with a9ft 5X leader, cutting back 2ft of the taper, and then adding the ring?
Does anyone fish at night? If so what do you use and why? I'm gonna be fishing a canal near me tonight but ive never fished there at night. Gonna stick with dark/black streamers and hope that works.
Just a few highlights from a great couple of days fishing in the south of Chile! I’ve been in Santiago for a couple of months while I’m studying abroad and knew I had to make the trip down south while I had a good chance. Definitely don’t regret it.
By Garner Reid A GOOD PORTION OF MY FLY FISHING INVOLVES THROWING SOME SORT OF A SINKING FLY LINE. Realistically, half of my time on the water involves streamers and sinking lines at least for some part of the day. If I am not out on the water guiding for streamer-eating fish like stripers, I’m in the fly shop talking about them.

Bonefishing, for me, is the purest form of the drug. I’m just returning from the first of three G&G Bonefish Schools in the Bahamas. This trip was more of a reunion than a school, with better than half of the anglers returning for the second or third time.
During the spring, summer and fall I often get the itch to forget about catching numbers and instead see how big of an attractor dry fly I can get away with fishing and still fool trout. For those of you who don't know, my closest trout waters are North Georgia and Western North Carolina.

Got bored and had access to a while bunch of fly tying supplies. Figured I should likely have a concept of it being the local fly club president. haven't tied a fly since 1993 at the Scout jamboree. seems to have turned out fine, not sure if it would survive a cast. Not sure what it's for.
Just came back from La Paz BCS. Hired a guide in Ensenada de Muertos for some fishing. We trolled lures for a few hours then Capt said change of plan and we hit the beach inside the lighthouse. He threw live sardines to get them frenzied and I cast into the fray, tuck the rod under my arm and two hand retrieve fast.
I’ve replied to a couple of posts in this sub with my recommendation for the best fly fishing sunglasses I’ve ever used, so I figure I’d make a post about these. These Sanofan Fluid Tints are not only the best value for money fishing sunnies I’ve ever seen, but just downright the best I’ve ever used (mauis, smiths, etc).

Got my birthday present a little early. Headed out to the beach today. Make no mistake, I am as newbie as they come but I just couldn’t stay out of the water. 9ft rod, 9line, rio saltwater leader…just used the chartreuse fly today. Looked like a fool for the first 30 mins, but got to feeling it after that. Had one hit and miss but that feeling.

I HAVE DEFINITE IDEAS ABOUT HOW TO CATCH BIG TROUT. APPARENTLY THEY ARE ALL WRONG. Like every other guy or gal with a fly rod, I have some pretty strong opinions about the kind of flies that catch big fish. These opinions are based on years of experience and experimentation.
When winter temperatures settle in, trout slow down—and so must our approach. Success demands technical midge patterns and refined subsurface presentations that can fool even the most lethargic fish.
By Bob Reece Round rubber and spandex are two members in the vast tide of synthetic materials that have washed over the fly tying world in recent years. They have both been used to create numerous surface and subsurface patterns. However, I would argue that one is better suited for the world above while the other thrives below.
Last week, I wrote about my close encounter with a highly-collectible rod, the Winston 8’6″ 4-weight BIIt, nicknamed “The Staff of Moses.” I’m still kicking myself for not buying it (despite the $800+ price tag), but hopefully when the next one comes along, I’ll have some extra cash laying around.
Some fly rods end up as more than just another entry in that year’s product catalog. A select few gain a cult following, often retaining their value (and exceeding their original retail price) as the years march on.
While late-season storms could still turn the tide, the current deficits would require what water managers call a "miracle March" to offset. For now, keep an eye on the gauges—but start forming your plan B.
Winter fly fishing: the challenge many avoid unless they’re passionate, well-equipped, or downright obsessed with trout. But here’s the secret: fish don’t hibernate like lazy bears. They just slow down and get a bit shy, turning us into stealthy river ninjas.
